I’m in the no pump no cgm camp, and being low carb is a real life saver. My A1C has been low-mid 5s with no major hypos. 7 units long acting, 2-3 units fast acting per day and test at least 5 times per day. Still not easy...but it’s what works for me.

I've been a Type 1 & Type 2 diabetic for over 30 years. I had gallbladder surgery and 1/2 my pancreas had to be removed. I was told that I still eke out insulin which is why I'm 1&2. I started watching your videos when I received my Libre2 and I wanted to see how easy it was for *real* person to put it on. You're so inspiring! 😸

I have discovered the condition 5 months ago (I am 29 and a runner for 10y) and I don't know if you feel the same, but now that I am on a very tight control and got a ton of information about it, this condition we have is kind of part of my identity till a point is almost like I introduce myself as a T1D and feel proud of it hahahahaha Cheers!

So lovely to see you back! Thank 3for this video, it was really interesting to see how you manage the thought process with injections. It was really interesting that you would eat carbs before walking at 6.6 and pre-empt the drop in blood sugars. I have been walking and waiting to start dropping below 5 before I treat. There is so much to learn about diabetes management! I am so grateful for you and those like you who are educating me as I come to grips with this new way of life x

This bit at the start about representation made me tear up 💛 I've been trying to get a pump for years but not able to access one yet and sometimes find the online community a bit disheartening as it feels like everyone has one! I know it's not the case though and I'm lucky to have the support I do but thought it was lovely of you to recognise that x

Oh my goodness, goodness Donna, I'm so so sorry to hear that you've been trying to get a pump for years and still don't have one. I COMPLETELY understand your feeling of being excluded within the community, and that just plain old sucks. It seems like everyone in this community has a pump - but when you really look at the total picture hardly anyone does! It's so so skewed and unrepresentative of the 'real world'. Is there any other content that you'd like to see sans pump? I want to try to make more content for people without access to this tech and am really keen to know what you'd like to see represented. With so so much love to you my fellow diabuddy, you are not alone, I stand with you my friend!! 💙💙💙

Hello Andrea! I love your videos, they are usually so calm and positive. Respect for switching from the pump treatment to MDI. I have been on MDI since 2002 (my diagnosis) and I am very curious about the pump treatment. However, in Brussels it is not a very spread or easily accessible treatment. Endos in the bigger hospitals are very old fashioned and tend to rely on MDI more. One example is last week I could finally switch from the Freestyle Libre to Dexcom (5 unfortunately the only one covered so far by Belgian Social Security/ health insurance ) and I was the first patient in my hospital to do that. None of the endos nor nurses had any idea (or training) on Dexcom (and the differences with Freestyle). By the way, when I found your channel some years ago I was so happy to see another fellow T1D plant-based! Are you still plant-based? I know you kind of encourage everyone to eat veggies which is great! Lots of positive thoughts to you and your followers from rainy Brussels!

Thank you so much! :) And greetings from rainy London!! 😅 How interesting about the coverage there in Brussels! For some reason, in my mind I just assumed that you'd have more advanced and up to date treatment being offered actively to you guys! Just goes to show you every country does it differently. I really hope you're able to get what you need out of your team - and good for you for blazing the way when it comes to the Dexcom! BRAVO! I'm no longer plant based, I would say I eat probably 80% plant based. I LOVED eating plant based, but have some pretty significant stomach problems I'm trying to overcome so had to introduce mores animal protein, very very sadly. I hope one day I'll be able to go back to completely plant-based eating, as I found it so so beneficial for my insulin sensitivity especially! Stay well, my fellow diabuddy and thank you so much for your kind words! :)

@@ShesDiabetic Very sorry to hear about your stomach problems. I wish you a speedy recovery! In my case it was also very beneficial for my insulin sensitivity. That, and doing regular exercise were the two biggest changes that have helped me keep my HA1C under control these last few years. Whenever I stop going to the gym the variability in my glycemia skyrockets out of control! By the way MyDario and its smartphone meter-dongle looks very convenient as compared to the usual old-fashioned bulky glucometer.

You may have already done this so forgive me if I am asking a dumb question. Have you got a day in the life with pump/cgm also? I was just wondering if you struggle at all with diabetes tech stuff. The advancement in tech is exciting but there is a lot to do to keep it working. Especially the lost signal and lots of alarms especially trying to sleep. And the pump itself (tslim) is easy to fall off of clothing and it doesn't work if it is in a pocket (lost signal again) even if it is facing out.

I do indeed have a few day in the life videos with my pump - yes! They should be on a day in the life/vlog playlist on my channel - and I also talk about my pump a ton in all my other videos (because I love it oh so much 😂) - so yes! I hope you find those helpful! And I totally know what you mean about the advancement in tech and the pros and cons of this - totally know what you mean - especially with the tslim as I switched to that recently and have had similar issues with signal loss!

Hello! I would need to know more about your condition to properly answer your question, and I think the best answer is that you really should speak to healthcare professional to discuss your concerns with high blood sugar. However, I would encourage you not to try to go without food or to push yourself too hard and work out as this could be detrimental to your overall health and probably isn't sustainable. Please stay safe and know that there are ways to manage your blood glucose, it just really depends on what the issue is, and your doctor will for sure be the best person to help you through this I think!! Carbohydrates are not necessary for survival! Glucose is, and your body can make infinite amounts of glucose on its own, reason we diabetics take basal insulin! Interesting fact not told by diabetes specialists high blood sugar starting at 140 mg/dl tends to cause a syndrome known as endothelial dysfunction, a main driver for most diabetic complications seen in diabetics. Ironically enough high carb diets tends to damage the neurovascular unit (brain blood barrier composed of endothelial cells and pericytes) causing mood problems, depression, and memory loss in uncontrolled diabetics. Diabetics can eat carbs if they can manage to copy what non diabetics do with their BG not rising above 140 mg/dl (non metabolic impaired individuals). Most non diabetics have BG around 80 mg/dl. Unfortunately for me after a year haven't been able to figure out how to eat large amounts of carbohydrates without going over 180. After reading the research studies done by the Diabetes Journal (ADA) I cut carbs nearly completely (
@boatman222345
@boatman222345 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent points all! The sad fact is that the medical community has been hesitant to be upfront about the long term consequences of elevated bG because they fear most people will refuse to go on low carb diets. I firmly believe that every diabetic has the right to make her/his own management decisions but I do feel that the medical community should be upfront about the probable consequences of remaining on a high carb diet. Simply put with a disease literally defined by the patient's inability to process carbohydrate eating a high carb meal is much like pouring gasoline on a fire while trying to extinguish the flames!
@pickledrick5158
@pickledrick5158 3 жыл бұрын
@@boatman222345 That's exactly what I think, great analogy! The medical community deems diabetic eye disease, kidney failure and CV events as "the normal onset" of diabetes. People with near normal euglycemic range tend not to develop any of those problems. I feel that most medical professionals feel patients are incapable of making long term commitments that will prevent them from having issues often in a very near future. My endocrinologist for instance said that low carb is not functional in the long term more of a "fad" and that my HbA1c at 4.6% was very dangerous. I said what's the normal range for non diabetics? 4.0 to 5.6% she replied, I said I feel I am entitled to normal BG and long healthy life. Now my HbA1c is 4.4% per the kits sold at the pharmacy, I know she will freak out. Yet other patients with HbA1c in the 10+% are ok, go figure..
@boatman222345
@boatman222345 3 жыл бұрын
Pedro Jauregui I absolutely agree that doctors do not have the right to automatically suppose that patients are incapable of managing their diabetes effectively. Like you I have run into many doctors who have a fit when they see I am running A1cs in the 5-6 range. "Too dangerous!" they say with a shake of their heads. That said after authoring something like 200,000 words of diabetic management advice on the internet, and after giving a dozen talks to nursing associations and groups of diabetics I have come to understand the resistance of many doctors when it comes to encourage their patients to attempt tight bG control. Simply put many diabetics are simply not willing to make the necessary effort to both understand and effectively manage their disease. Time and time again I've spent hours explaining the reasons for out of control bG and yet the diabetic has simply failed to take the steps necessary to correct the problem. After several years of encountering this resistance to take responsibility for maintaining their bG through adhering to a proper diet/exercise/insulin/bG testing regimen I suffered the same sort of burnout that physicians experience. My final post on managing diabetes was entitled, "The view from the other side of the desk." and in it I explained how discouraging it can be for doctors to have diabetics refuse to commit to managing their disease despite all their efforts to educate them Kind of reminds me of the old Snoopy cartoon where he blurts out, "We have discovered the enemy and it is us!" None of this, however, excuses doctors from at least making an effort to educate their diabetic patients. What the patient does with that information is up to them.

I went on the education course and was telling them about my night time numbers and my next day fasting it turns out I need to eat more carbs. Which I’ve been doing and my numbers have gone from being in the 14s to fasting at 7.6. Carb is not the enemy and I got brain fog really bad. I’m a writer and when I go back and look at what I write I’m embarrassed. My brain is working with carbs

Hi Andrea, I would like to mention that being on pump with fast acting insulin only, is easier to get into hypo with a small walk for example. Using long acting insulin like lantus is not the same. Long acting insulins are not activated by physical activity in contrast to the fast acting,. Have you observed this :)
@ShesDiabetic
@ShesDiabetic 4 жыл бұрын
Oh what an interesting point! Honestly I've never thought about this before, but looking back, perhaps this has been the case for me! Although I do feel that whenever I exercise on Lantus, whether I've previously bolused with fast acting insulin or not, I do find that my BG drops, but perhaps not as much as if I were to have the pump on...I'll have to pay closer attention to this moving forward! That you for the awesome and informative tip!!! :)

Gosh - I hear you! This can be so difficult and overwhelming! First and foremost, I would suggest you speak with your doctor about this, but some things I would personally try out would be look at the following: Are you eating before bed? (This may mean you have active insulin in your body overnight that's causing issues with your sugars) Are you eating a high fat meal at nighttime (that's making your BG climb overnight)? Are you taking too much or too little long acting insulin? I hope this helps my fellow diabuddy!! You've got this!! 🙏🏻

You were diagnosed at a time similar to me - right in the middle/end of puberty and then all the changes of leaving school...THIS. IS. HARD. I don't know but I find that your blood sugars are high a lot? I'm using tresiba and was advised to do 8 units before bedtime and the fabricator of tresiba claims it works for 48 hours, but I think it doesn't? The power is gone after 12 hours and therefore I lowered my bedtime dose to 6 units and know testing with a second shot of 8 unit's 12 hours later in the morning and that gives me a more stable fasting blood sugar overall. I'm testing this dosis for three days and look if it stays stable if not I will make the morning dose 10 units? The dawn phenomenal I'm bolusing 1 unit when waking up with novalog (Aspart) The same with Lantus, I used that for a couple of weeks and it's definitely not working for 24 hours. I've quit Lantus because of some research that states it may cause cancer. Do you know dr. Richard K Bernstein?

Hi Andrea, I'd just like to say your videos are great and I'm not even a diabetic! I found your channel because I was interested in using glucose measurement to help improve my diet (I'm actually a sugar addict and so am a bit fascinated by it all!) and I stumbled across your insightful videos. After watching your videos and doing some research I actually got a Freestyle Libre and I'm testing it out (on day 9 of 14). I have a feeling you would have some really interesting thoughts and feedback on using glucose monitoring to help weight control (I'm a failed dieter but I lost 50lbs in 18 months and I'm about to launch a channel to help others do the same with the hacks I learnt, and to help avoid all of the confusion out there -OMG the dieting confusion there is!!!!). Anyhow I have loads of questions, but one that happened today. I saw my glucose levels drop when I was hungry (a few hours after eating), and I've also seen it go up when I was hungry and didn't eat (and I wondered if this was my body adding Glucose from storage into the blood), and was wondering if this could potentially be a marker for weight loss (if you can keep your glucose stores low)? Don't worry I'm not asking for a medical reply, it's more just your instinctive thoughts. Again many thanks for your videos. Cheers, Tom
@ShesDiabetic
@ShesDiabetic 4 жыл бұрын
How interesting and welcome Tom! Thank you for watching - even if you're not t1d! So, as you said, I'm no doctor so can't medically give you any advice, yada, yada! But what I can tell you is that LOADS of things can effect your blood sugar that have nothing to do with food, it can be a delay gastric emptying, it can be stress, even the weather outside can have an effect! We a diabetics grapple with this daily as we don't have a working pancreas to deal with all of this and often need to intervene ourselves, thought it would make sense that a drop in levels would make you hungry, as I can attest- it does the same for me! And right you are - it could be the emptying of glucose stores when you're hungry but don't eat. Basically - your guesses above are as good as mine, but very interesting to note your findings from a working pancreas point of view!! And hey - also - congratulations on your weight loss! If it makes you happier and healthier that's just awesome!!
@imjusttom
@imjusttom 4 жыл бұрын
@@ShesDiabetic Thanks for your reply, wow even just the words Gastric Emptying make me both excited and blow my mind more :) Do our bodies deliberately delay gastric emptying based on energy level, or is that independent with it's own 3 busses come at once type timetable (which I guess is based on the food you eat, or heavy exercise I know running stops digestion). Our bodies are just truly amazing...

Hi I am a type 1 diabetic of 47 years duration who has been on a low carb regimen for about 40 years. In addition I authored a column on managing diabetes for several years and had a great deal of contact with diabetics from all over the world. When I heard you say that you were going to consume a meal containing 50 grms of carbs on a premeal bG of 180 mg after taking 3.5 units of Novolog I fully expected your postmeal bG to be 250 mg/dl or higher. You could have knocked me over with a feather when you reported a bG in the low 100 mg/dl range! I find myself wondering how many units of Lantus you took that morning as you didn't say? Also if you think .50 each for test strips is a high price in England some brands here in the USA retail for $1.95 each! As for insulin itself I use Levemir and Novolog and they both sell for nearly $400 a 10 ml vial! Levemir pens sell for around $600 per box of 5 and Novo brand needle refills cost as much as $65 per hundred! I am more and more wondering if I should move to England? I could as my mother was born and raised there and I qualify for auto citizenship. By the way I didn't know about he Novopen Echo with its half unit dosing capability until I watched your informative video. Thanks!

Eating more dates would increase blood sugar, no matter the number. For anyone reading this, please know that what Feras suggested holds no scientific evidence and is completely unfounded. Don’t get it...the meter reads high. Had I not been using my normal meter, I would have overdosed on insulin in numerous occasions because of how high it reads.

The reason I’m watching this video rn is that they told me that I have Type 1 and i was the hospital since last Wednesday and I’m so so scared and they told me I don’t need carbs and I’m getting hungry easily😩😩 and my blood sugar is so high 😏

Same here, they told me to keep eating what I want just use more insulin. I don’t want to keep injecting myself all the time so I’m trying the low carb but I get hungry fast cause low carb is not enough food for me but I’m trying. I was diagnosed i think 3 weeks ago and it has been a rollercoaster to say the least. Good luck to you

Hi nice vlog! I have always been told told to use an alcohol swab and then wiping the first drop before pricking my finger and taking my blood sample. I noticed you don't, is that not necessary? Also curious how many carbs on average do you do for most meals?

Hey, not trying to answer for Andrea but I just thought I would say - yes that's what's recommended when someone is first diagnosed to make sure there is no bacteria on the site but it is time consuming, especially if you are checking a lot so I think over time a lot of people just don't do those things and they don't see any issue. But of course they make sure their hands are clean so there's not sugar residue that would give a false bg reading. Hope this helps!

I so so appreciate both comments here - and Siobhan is SPOT ON! Thank you so much Siobhoan for taking the time to respond here! With regards to how many carbs I eat - it totally depends, but I'd say on average probably 50g per meal? Approx 100-175g per day? A rough estimate for ya there! :) Wishing you both a wonderful week ahead!! XOX

Your posting time seems to often coincide with my surfing time, so sorry for the apparent overzealous response😉! Like the new, almost impromptu, style and your willingness to take the bullet and go sans pump/CGM! Although my CGM almost breaks the bank, I’m so dependent on it that it would be difficult for me to be without. If I had to only give Lantus in the morning, the feet-on-floor effect would quickly push my BG significantly up, even without consuming anything. Perhaps that suggests I’m not being spot on with my low carb diet and my glycogen stores are higher than desired. Of course another thing to have to deal with off CGM are those embarrassing finger scars! P.S., was that a moment of weakness ‘turkey’ sandwich?

Ah - I hear you Paul! I too love my CGM, but actually being able to test so so much (as much as I wanted) made this a very doable time - and dare I say it, even enjoyable and liberating! I'm so grateful for all this tech. And how interesting about your feet-to-floor experience and deduction of the possibly of glycogen stores - very interesting indeed! It's all a daily trial and error, I find personally, but you really seem to be dialed into the science and looking beyond the obvious basics which I find so so inspiring. Thank you for always sharing this with me and all of us here!!! PS - what do you mean moment of weakness turkey sandwich?? I was wondering about that! :)

@@ShesDiabetic Haha, looked turkey to me and was convinced you were vegan! Whatever it was, certainly looked scrumptious! Just tried coconut milk in my coffee to reduce my dairy intake but it's a no go, even with added stevia - yuck!
