The Lake of Rot seems to have a huge inaccessible area to the northwest that's usually obscured by fog. What's extra weird is that the map border up there doesn't have the hard drawn edge most of the map does, but rather fades out, as though it was erased in photoshop. Would be neat to see if there's anything actually up there.

In game there's an area called the "Deeproot Depths" where you can find what appears to be the roots of the Erdtree. On the map they seem to be well aligned, but I was curious if the roots you find and the Ertree itself are actually stacked on top of each other in the game world like the map claims. Also there is a giant statue in the Grand Cloister on top of a building that the rot bug things seem to be worshipping. the thing I want to see most is a zoomout of the ruin-strewn precipice mini dungeon, which is at the very north of liurnia. it's such an awesome looking dungeon, you walk on these HUGE ruins and it gives such an incredible sense of scale, I really wanna see it zoomed out. other than that, I'd love to see a zoomout of each legacy dungeons you haven't done yet. so, that's stormveil, raya lucaria, the haligtree (both segments if possible) and farum azula. you don't need to do leyndell since you did it at the end of this episode. volcano manor would also be nice, you kindoff did it last episode but it wasn't the focus. I'd also like a zoomout of the other underground areas, deeproot depths and ainsel river (which includes lake of rot you can't forget about lake of rot). (and yes I just really like zoomouts). the arena of fortissax would also be cool, since it's like an area that's normally in the map, but it's also separate. It could also be filler geometry in case the sorcerer's body and head are ever bent in such a way that there's a hollow gap between the stone mask and the robes. Considering the pale skin of the sorcerers, the fact that these crystals seem to run rampant wherever they grow, and the corrupting nature of certain knowledge/sorceries in Elden Ring, I quite like the idea that their bodies are actually crystallizing

@@Loop_Kat Them having crystals in place of their heads kinda fits with the lore too. Like you said with the bodies crystalizing, if you read the flavor text on Lusat's or Azur's helmets, you see that their whole brain and upper skull were replaced by primal glintstone and the rest of their body was mostly inorganic by the time you find them. When you zoomed out from Bestial Sanctum it hit me how interesting it is that the Erdtree is always loaded in as a fully three-dimensional object and not just a giant billboard or something. It seems like it'd save a lot of assets to make the Erdtree into a billboard any time the player isn't looking directly at it, or moving around with the Erdtree in view. Instead, it's a MASSIVE, fully-rendered 3D object. I wonder how many other assets are handled this way. Especially when I start to notice frame drops. It seems like Elden Ring could've been optimized a little better. But then again, I'm an idiot who knows literally nothing about anything, let alone something as complicated as programming and game development, so I'm probably wrong about that without even knowing it!
@MichaelPohoreski2 жыл бұрын
Professional graphics game dev here. *You are correct* that objects FAR off in the distance _could be_ billboarded / impostered as an optimization. There are two issues: 1. One needs to be careful to match the lighting on the imposter at the pixel level otherwise the fake 2D image will stand out from the surroundings. Worse, if you have dynamic lights you will need to update the imposter at some low frequency. 2. “Popping” can occur when the imposter is switched out and the actual geometry is rendered. The thing is I don’t recall seeing much LOD (level of detail) popping as the lower tessellated geometry is switched out for higher tessellation when you get closer. I probably should see if it is possible to fire up Nvidia insight and do a frame capture. The baked lighting changes definitely stands out as you get closer to buildings (the second entrance of Crumbling Farum Azula is a good location to see this) but that tends to be true of most games. It is just more noticeable due to the HUGE buildings. Still, the engine is dam impressive. Due to the huge time needed for creating such a LARGE world stuffed with content From Software probably figured that it was just much simpler to use the lowest LODs then to get an imposter system working. The thing that blows me away is the insane draw distance, geometry for buildings and terrain. If you can see it, chances are you can probably travel to it! Their engine is notorious for being unoptimized but Elden Ring definitely shows they have been doing some serious upgrades necessary to support the large rendering distances of an open world. Even with its flaws From Software has an impressive graphics & streaming engine.

The frame drops are because of the anti-cheat, at least on PC. It's been a consistent problem since DS3.
@Joyous3952 жыл бұрын
Its hollow and isn't very detailed ontop of the hue and glow making up for that, the distance and rendering differences wouldn't be noticeable anyways because of the glow effect The glow is too bright to see actual low poly distortions or blurs With the way each area is loaded, id assume they sectioned off the maps specifically around the way the erdtree starts to cause issues But overall it isn't as big a resource as it seems, considering how it's modeled and all. Like a skybox for example is huge and looks detailed and is loaded at all times. A lot of video game design is trying to create an illusion of something greater than what's actually there.

If and when you do a part 3 (please do a part 3), I'd love it if you showed off the Haligtree. Specifically the left side of it, since the map screen shows a lot of buildings in Elphael that look like they'd be explorable space while in actuality Elphael is pretty much entirely just the area on the right side and partially within the tree. Aside from that, a zoom-out shot of Crumbling Farum Azula would be amazing. Not necessarily because it's hard to piece together how the level fits together, just because that area specifically is visually stunning and seeing the whole thing zoomed out would be cool. Actually, I suppose as a third thing tangentially related to Farum Azula it would be nice to see a zoom out of the Dragonlord Placidusax arena. I say this because in the lore you're supposed to be basically inside of the giant tornado (albeit at some nebulous point in the past) and the map screen's location of the Site of Grace mostly lines up even if it's not perfect. I personally can't imagine that Placidusax's arena is actually physically located in or near Farum Azula so it would be cool to see where you actually are relative to the rest of the zone, damn and blast what the map says. Doubly so if I'm wrong and the arena actually is more or less where it's supposed to be.

Not entirely sure about that. If you feed Gurranq nine deathroot, meeting the clergyman in Farum Azula will have a different dialogue that starts the fight signifying how he recognizes you. Maliketh also gets a different voice line after beating him w/nine deathroot fed. Fair point that Gurranq doesn’t disappear after beating Maliketh though…it may have something to do with the fact that Farum Azula is a land trapped in time, separate from cause and effect of the rest of reality.

I saw the upload without the commentary and couldn't figure out what happened. I refreshed and it was gone and I wondered if I got a peek into an alternate reality. It was kinda creepy.

There's a land mass below the Divine Tower of West Altus. If you go to the Minor Erdtree church and use a telescope, you can see buildings, and what seems to be a fully textured land mass. So far, nobody has been able to make it over there and that's something I would love to see.
