One thing I haven't seen recently is a faceoff in the offensive zone, near the end of a period with a few seconds left, pulling the goaltender to try to get a quick faceoff win and shot.

The Igor Shesterkin contract $11.5M/season will be debated in the years to come. It has a Rick DiPietro feel (contract wise). Usually a goalie isn’t given an absurd amount without having either made or won a Stanley Cup. Retired Ranger legend Henrik Lundqvist never made more than $5.5M/season until after his 9th season where he lost opposite to J. Quick in 2014 Stanley Cup Finals. During that Cup King Henrik’s lunch pail defense was one of the best in the league. With Igor’s contract,I can’t see the Rangers having the cap space to build that team. The Rangers need a top Center, physical RW and A LOT of defensive help.

The new College Football Playoff has kinda thrown things off for the Winter Classic. In the past, the two semifinal games were on New Year's Eve. But this year they have 3 of the 4 quarterfinal games on New Year's Day, which would impact viewership for the Winter Classic. Then again, I don't think many people knew it was today, so they're kinda screwed either way.

Please remember the winter classically is for the US audience more for the Brit lite's above the US border. I guarendee that they will get more eyeballs on screens on the 31st than on the first since the playoff starts at 4PM EST. Like any business it is governed by profits and the 31st was a better option this season. I do think that many of those games that were scheduled to play on the 31st could have been moved to the 1st. Especially all of the games played in Brit Lite above the US border.

I agree that’s what the habs would expect for matheson (and probably what the canes would expect for ghost), and it’s probably not in the long term interests of the canucks to cough up a 1st for either, and beyond that I’m not sure what vancouver has that would interest either team. but the canucks are in a tough spot with their top pair both out. and you’re right they need a puck mover. if they don’t want to give too much, they could hit the bargain bin for a guy like barrie or gustafsson. but if you can only play him 10-15 minutes how much will it help? ghost is on a playoff team on a value contract, so he’s probably not on the market. matheson has a decent contract, but he’s far more likely to move because of hutson’s emergence and where the habs are as a franchise. if I’m vancouver I don’t send the 1st either. I try and patch this up until hughes is back and if I miss the playoffs, then it’s not the end of the world. but that doesn’t mean it’s what they’ll do.

Regarding Roy's decision, it seemed entirely logical to me. The Islanders were down a goal and on the penalty kill with under a minute to play. If he doesn't pull the goalie and the Leafs win the faceoff, they'll just pass it back and forth until the clock runs out because they're on the power play. if the Leafs lose the faceoff, the Islanders are down a man and they have to get the puck out of the zone with control before they pull the goalie, which is almost impossible. Their best option is to pull the goalie in this case, if you win the faceoff you have the same amount of players and you can make a play, if you lose the faceoff, the other team still has to put it in the empty net and you have the same amount of players.
