The breaking into poetic meter and performative (not natural) crying at the end of a majlis about karbala really throws me off and actually makes it harder to connect for me (non shia not muslim western background) I get it's trying to translate the great farsi and arabic traditions around ashura into English but it makes it impossible for me to feel emotionally grounded and looks like the speaker is doing an act. It just seems fake even though I know they do grieve for Imam Hussain عليه السلام and his companions. And the tatbir and pageantry around ashura in a lot of countries, for us converts it seems so alien and like if we were to get involved we would be taking on a lot of culture that is not part of the religious truth we accepted even though it may not be haram for them.

I fully agree with you. I am from an arab/shia background but this still rings so true to me. I feel like the "forced" acts somehow are more prevalent when translated to English, or when adapted for a Western audience. Hard to make up what to think of this man.

It’s not pleasant when the host talk more than the invited guest. Have some respect for your guest. Poor guest even if he gets a chance to answer a very long question, the interviewer keeps interrupting. Very irritating

Salaam ZoePerrault! Sorry for feeling irritated- tbh the invited guest is not really a person of podcasts- and brother Muhammad Ali was trying his best to put the question across properly, he was trying to make sure the guest is very comfortable and open with the discussion. i know it may come across as “talking more” but that wasn’t the case- it was just a way of making sure the guest answers the exact same questions MA asked in detail, in accuracy and in a specific format! And it’s a strategy of removing some nerves too sometimes. Thank you for being concerned for the guest’s respect and being concerned for the chance of speaking! It definitely can come across as negative sometimes…But it was kind of Brother Muhammad Ali to explain the question in detail. Sorry, but it would be extremely unfair to say that Brother Muhammad Ali needs to give more respect to the guest- he gave more than enough respect! Hope that adds something positive
