One important point you missed is that the shield should be connected at one point only. If it's not grounded anywhere, it may as well not be used. If grounded at both ends, there is the possibility of ground loops, which can create noise.

Hello James. There is a good article on this subject which you can find here. www.emcstandards.co.uk/cable-shield-grounded-at-one-end-only

Thanks for the great summary of cable types and performance. I'm confused about grounding. For example when using CAT6a cable, if the shielding of the cable is bonded to the metal wrap around the RJ45 connector at both ends (I'm assuming that's it is).. and the equipment at both ends is grounded, doesn't that potentially create a grounding loop?

This is the first time I've heard CAT 5e was only good for 50M at 1 Gb. As far as I know, it's always been 100M. Also, Gb Ethernet was designed to run 100M over plain CAT 5 and predates 5e. As you mention, there is a length difference between 6 & 6a at 10 Gb.

Hello James. The standards for cable bandwidth has always been about Mhz capability over a 100mtr Link. Cat5e was always specified in the standards as being able to carry 100Mhz over a distance of 100mtrs. 100Mhz allows for 100mb ethernet. One can of course put a 250Mhz (Gigabit capable) signal on a Cat5e but the signal loss will happen at a shorter length than 100mtrs+. Category 6 was set at 250Mhz over 100mtrs. It is not a precise science. How far one can push 1Gb over Cat5e will depend on the performance capabilities of the type of Cat5e cable due to wire gauge, crosstalk limiting factors etc.

@@dintekel I tried to reply, but it might be too long, as KZbin won't let me post it. Is there any other way to send it to you? Regardless, my comments were based on the contents of Ethernet The Definitive Guide, from O'Reilly.

I have cat 6a and it’s giving me the same ping / latency as cat 8 🤔

the problem with lifi would be that you would have to be in direct sight of the modem

I suspect just being in the room would be enough, as the light will bounce off walls, etc.. You can demonstrate this with infrared remote controls, which often don't have to be aimed at the device.
