The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the kzbin.infoUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

I can understand why your clients want Dobermann. Dobermann is suited for warm places and they don't shed fluffy hairs. They are much easier to maintain.

I was just telling my wife that. Dobies don't shed like a lot of other breeds. Even Rotties shed a lot, and people sometimes don't realize that. Good point. I had a Dobie in Buffalo, hardly a warm climate year round, but he managed well outside in the winter as long as it wasn't for prolonged periods.

I raise pure work line and some show line import European Dobermans. I select four many things (DCM/health first and foremost) and I like a good THICK working Doberman coat. I select for it and have to say that because I live in a 5th wheel (due to my mobility issues/arthritis) my Dobermans live outside 24/7 and have NO issues. I live on 20 fully fenced acres in high desert in WA state and it is 100 in summer and 5 in the winter. With free ability to run whenever they want and because they are outside they are acclimated to the weather, they only need a great quality insulated dog house (Lifesaver brand) warm, dry straw and a door flap they are good to go. They actually run around chasing deer on the otherside of the fence most winter nights!

Good on you guys for showing the not-so-pretty parts of puppy training. Every breeder and trainer you see on social media just wants to show the puppies hanging off a sleeve, but don't want to show a puppy afraid of the stairs. Very relieving to see a trainer as successful as yourself working through these things.

What a fantastic video. I had a Doberman, a LONG time ago. He was outstanding. He wasn't trained at all like Haz's dogs, but he did have a little Schutzhund training with bite work and a little bit of blind work, but nothing extensive. He was extremely protective of us and the house and property, but he was very well trained and knew and loved the neighbors and they him. He was perfect. Brave, loyal, a wonderful pet. I have no idea if he'd pass the anxiety test, but he did get a bit aggressive around certain other dogs - especially dogs with a LOT of fur, LOL. We used to have to keep him in the car at the vet in case a sheep dog or other furry breed came in. I abruptly lost him when he was eight and a half years old, and THAT was 37 years ago. I live in Cleveland and you almost NEVER see the breed anymore, or at least I don't. I miss him and think about him every time I watch these videos. What incredible dogs they are, and also ALL of Haz's dogs as well.

Happy to see this put out there for the general public to see. Too often we get "Can my dog do protection work?" from clients and they don't even know the name of the kennel or breeder the dog is out of- not to even mention the sire or dam and their work history. It's a harsh reality for many that their dog they bought as a "guard dog" to protect them cannot and will not ever be able to truly do that because they didn't do their homework before buying the puppy.

Mastiffs as well. Keep in mind some family’s don’t want a high drive dog or a dog that barks a lot. They want a big dog that can deter but won’t demand alot of attention like a dobie would etc. Keep in mind.. he talks about prey drive etc which is what police officers look for when they need a dog to chase down an intruder. What the average family needs is a dog sigh defence drive/guard instinct.. territorial etc so that they take down a threat that enters property. High drive dogs are too much for most families and most families don’t need a dog to run after an intruder for miles. Even a bouvier isn’t high drive but has strong defence instinct and will defend against a threat.

My understanding is they were over portrayed as the villain's dogs in movies in the 70s and 80s and because of that police stopped using them as much 'cause they scared the citizens. Because of this the top breeders stopped producing them because their main clients stopped purchasing them so all what was left was the wanna be gangsters so they started losing the prey drive and gameness from the terrier and to an extent shepherd in them and the inexperienced breeders started breeding more for defense than prey.

my male GSD def took time to mature into his drives. granted he is my first working line pup and i didn't want a super high drive dog that was a nutjob at 10 weeks. granted as i've learned i think there were things i could have done when he was younger to foster his prey drive more, well i know i could have. but thankfully our puppy class trainer introduced me to herding and dock diving and dock diving REALLY brought out his desire to work for toys vs food. i've also been fortunate to find our current helper and he's really coming into his own. he wont ever be a super intense dog but hes been a great 1st working line dog or learning dog if you want to call it that. it has been such a joy to watch him grow more and more intense in the sports he does and im glad i got to mature with him into it to make me better for him and my future dogs. i feel silly saying this now but the breeder said he really didnt have much drive or any at all. but he is a natural herding dog, the other sports took time for both of us. we tried out a few clubs before some friends were like come meet this helper with us and i really went initially just to learn from him and see what he had to say about my dog so i could further my own knowledge and boy is my dog a different dog now! So, for everyone out there feeling defeated sure some sports really arent from your dog but dont let that stop you from going out and learning. sometimes it just takes the right people to bring out things in your dog you didn't think were there.

I agree. I think this company is honest and very knowledgeable. There are MANY out there who tout "home raised" when all they're doing is having their children or friends keep them in their house for a few months at thousands a month ....... and all of a sudden they're "home raised". My opinion is who cares? Home raised can be raised (for the first four months) with ME with my family in MY house. Just a sales pitch to jack up the prices. I'd trust Haz any day, and the others not so much, but again, I'm sure there are many reputable ones out there. I'm just skeptical of the ones who are CONSTANTLY advertising on YT or FB and bristle at any type of criticism. To me, that says a lot.

Wonderfully insightful video. I'm very interested in hearing/seeing more having to do with what you were saying with "opening a dog up to defense", especially as I'm interested in getting a doberman myself. I know its a subject you've briefly mentioned here and there in past videos, but I don't believe you've ever gone in-depth with talking about and showing it and how to do it right. While I plan on going to a trainer to help with the protection/decoy/bite work, it'd be nice to at least be able to spot a trainer who knows how to do it right vs one who clearly doesn't.

After "turning on the dog" with equipment, do you then start teaching them to ignore equipment & focus on the actual person instead ? I've had "equipment" issues with dogs before because i turned them on WITH a sleeve. Dog was just too focused on equipment 🤦 good part was, I learned from that & now i NEVER let a dog "play" with sleeves.. I also dont let them take the sleeve as a reward after a bite. Take the sleeve, drop it & instantly focus on the person

What about boerboels? Are they considered good guard dogs?
@Godiscoming888
@Godiscoming888 Жыл бұрын
Yes… absolutely. There are many breeds that can do the job for family or property protection. Haz has a bias because he sells Gsds. A family member is a police officer and the reason German shepherds are used in police work is because they are highly biddable(will out in command)and they are multipurpose and can handle being kenneled. Breeds like Dobermans bond very closely to one owner and don’t do well with being switched around from handler to handler or kenneled. Some mastiff breeds won’t let go when you tell them to “out”.. some dogs like Akitas will straight up just kill an intruder instead of just biting it. So basically stability and biddability is why gsds are chosen to take down intruders because they will listen to the cop instead of just going for the kill. But if you aren’t a police officer.. many power breeds can do the job and it depends what you are looking for.. low or high energy.. shedding/non shedding etc. I love Haz’s work but he clearly has a favourite.

The political and racial violence in South Africa against the Boer, aka the farmer, is insane. I know of a lady with a paintball shop that had over 100 break ins and three armed robberies in ten years. Those dogs have exposure to threats and it’s in their dna to know what suspicious people act like. Hundreds of thousands of these dogs with hundreds of experiences of violence per dog is an environment that makes guard dogs like the Roman era had. They have threat detection skills above almost all other dogs and are formidable because of size. This is a guard dog, but it’s really a war dog.

I don't think he's biased, he's just right. If you want more than property protection Mals, GSDs, and Dutchies are just more effective as PPDs and in the case of family protection dogs GSDs definitely king. He's said before that mastiffs are good for property protection.

The best dogs that iv heard from multiple security guard dog trainers say that adopted dogs do better at being protectors and because they appreciate and love their owners. that's another beautiful reason to Adopt and not Shop that is why shelters get packed and animals get euthanized to bring in the new ones due to people buying.. they always have German shepherds melenoise cane Corso's dobermans i see them alote at shelters at least in my area in all 6 shelter's. The world is about giving love it doesn't matter if its not a puppy your still going to love it and its going to love you back thats the main root love. dont be selfish just because you want a puppy and all that your just filling a selfish breeders pocket to make a quick buck and have them bragging about their blood line breeds to sell, while animals are getting euthanized at the shelter's and pound's, breeders are celebrating happy with the mony they made of you.. open your heart to adopting they have beautiful animals at the shelter's as well if appearance is a big thing to you ,adopt patiently aswell. ❤

While all pets deserve a good home, don't make them more human as they are. Someone who needs a working dog, can't just adopt a random dog in most cases. I like mutts, but they are often like a wonder bag. Often we know nothing about them and their history. We don't know which characteristics of which breed will show and if it has the characteristics one needs for example for a guard dog. Working dogs start training very young. The pedigree is also not just to show off, but it makes it easier to track the bloodline. When you want a working dog, you look for a working bloodline and for a breed that has the characteristics you need. Not all ppl buying breed dogs for the look and also not all breeder doing it for money. All dogs are lovely and beautiful. But for example when you need a guardian lifestock dog, it doesn't help you to adopt a poodle mix. But if you are just looking for a pet for nice cuddles and walks, you are fine with adopting a dog from the shelter in many cases.

Why do you use prey drive to transfer over to man? Why not use the dog natural protective instinct (defense) and the bond it has with the owner/family?
@JakuHanma-yt7wg
@JakuHanma-yt7wg 9 ай бұрын
You use defence but just not as much as prey. Also with prey you can send the dog on someone whereas with defence the dog needs particular pressure put on them. So for an example let's say two guys are walking together one has a Neapolitan Mastiff, the other with a Malinois. They're approaching someone who's about to pull out a gun and the man with the Malinois sends the dog on the guy while the guy with the Neo is praying that the guy come close and puts direct pressure on the dog.

In Australia, sending your dog to attack someone is prohibited by law, and it carries significant legal liability. Additionally, firearms are also prohibited by law. I initially believed that this practice was exclusive to law enforcement in the United States. A protection dog is primarily employed as a deterrent or in response to physical threats, strictly for defensive purposes. Furthermore, it's essential to note that the concept of prey drive is typically associated with hunting rather than protection. Therefore, it seems more logical to focus on the dog's defense drive rather than relying on its prey drive for protection.
@JakuHanma-yt7wg
@JakuHanma-yt7wg 9 ай бұрын
@@sharonblakeney-mcdonald8217 Well, clearly Haz is looking for more than a plain deterrent. If you just want a Corso high in defence go ahead, but for well rounded protection dogs it's better to tap into both while focusing on prey since defence is based on fear.
@sharonblakeney-mcdonald8217
@sharonblakeney-mcdonald8217 9 ай бұрын
Defense is about defending against a threat and is not fear-based; it's rooted in a fight drive to protect territory, family, food, and one's own life, driven by the will to make the threat leave. Defense drive does not arise from insecurity or fear. Most dogs possess an innate protective defense drive, with some breeds exhibiting stronger drives than others. Defense behavior typically triggers the highest aggression response when compared to prey drive behavior, which is primarily used for hunting rather than defending
@JakuHanma-yt7wg
@JakuHanma-yt7wg 9 ай бұрын
@@sharonblakeney-mcdonald8217 Yes, in other words fear. Prey is saying "I'm about to kill that frickin' 800 kilo Moose and eat it", defence is saying "Oh, shoot that thing's big he could be a threat I'm gonna try and scare him off." Yes, the molossers' have better nerves so they have a higher chance of a fight reflex than running or freezing, but it's still tapping into fear for arousal. Prey drive is rewarding since it is a hunt instinct because the dog successfully captures prey, whereas with defence what the dog desires is to get rid of the person so arousal will end once the person leaves. Once again defence is used though, it's just better to have both than rely on the one based on fear(as in a perception of a threat). I don't get why you're so adamant about having to only use defence drives besides maybe that you're butt hurt that there's dogs out there with better rounded temperaments than your own.

In my country it's big no no training protection dogs with high drive who ends up in some familys backyard with no mental stimulation... This kind of training is dangerous... You can't just train a Dobermann and give him to a lard ass lazy american family who doesn't continouisly work with the dog and keep him mentally stimulated. What happens with a working breed who isn't stimulated? He develops behavioural problems and can also pose a threat to his own family. Americans works lot's of hours and they have hardly time or will to work their Dobermann or german shepherd for hours a day. For many years there was an american show on TV with Caesar Milan. The common thing on all of his hundreds shows os how americans keep their dogs locked up in the backyard, never taking them for walks etc. Off course the dog will develope issues! Well, only buy a working breed if you can put in the time and effort to keep it busy!!! Pardon my english.

😂 if you buy "your" dog outside of USA and bring it here for sale he will be fearful and stable lol. Any dog will be stable or not depending on when what and how. Fairytale teller lol. Dude, shutzhund IS protection competition, many German gsd yes, have shutzhund title meaning they passed protection exam

Stability is a proxy for confidence. Confidence is the most important trait. Plenty of dogs can do sport training that can't do real protection. Equipment bias and routine are not possible for real protection.

Sorry but an IGP/ScH title is not the same as a personal protection trained dog. It is a practiced routine. Go around the blinds and find the Helper. Now PSA certified dogs are totally different. They are put in literally dozens of situations and must make choices as to if they react or not. And the protection dogs that Haz trains are even at a higher level. They are just not the same.
