My chihuahua uses a kitty litter box with a wee wee pad inside. As long as he knows where the box is, he’ll go potty in the box. Never have to take outside for potty! Perfect especially during bad weather and you don’t want or can’t take your dog outside

Oh thanks! It did take a lot of experimenting with different types of potty's until I found this one. I first used the grate that came under the mat and that smelled too much. Then I tried training pads and they smelled also. So, I figured that Lexi's cat litter never smelled and I gave it a shot. Success! My first Shih Tzu had allergies to outside grasses and trees and the vet gave her steroid shots. That did help somewhat. I'm sure that your vet can test Samson for allergies. Good luck!

Wow now that is a different idea. My Shih Tzu used a large pad in my sunroom. That was it. Sometimes she missed the puppy pad and it would stream underneath it. This is a very good idea and thanks for providing this information. My daughter has a smaller Shih Tzu and she does the same thing Lacey does on the sofa.....digging and then laying down and then getting up again and digging up a storm. It was nice seeing your Lacey doing that.

+Viviana May Edwards Oh, you are very welcome! I just bought two new mats and every year they seem to improve them even more. I am now using puppy/training pads underneath of them instead of the cat litter. The litter still worked great, but can be a pain to work with. The liquid waste goes right through the mats and into the pads (the liquid turns to gel), then I just throw the pads out at the end of the day. Of course, if she uses them a lot on bad weather days, I change them more throughout the day. Best of luck to you and your furbabies :)

I bought that for my Shih Tzu Sydney but he would not use it. I tried everything , but no luck. I think it was the feel of the plastic grass . But I kept my receipt and returned it. He uses a washable mat, we flush the poo and wash the mat. But he hardly ever uses it. But on the need it works for us. Love Lacy' s videos .

How did you train Lacey to use this? My dog has allergies to pollen and grass in summer, and did not want to use the porch potty. I would love something like this in the garage for high pollen days.

@Symone Smyth The grass mat has a dog attractant scent that helps your dog realize that is where they should go. Lacey happened to be potty trained on puppy pads first. So she had no problem using the grass mat for indoor use. The indoor potty is so great and very convenient. I did try the porch potty a long time ago, but Lacey didn’t want to step up on it. That is a fabulous contraption. I have been watching you guys for a long time. I always used pee pads, only on hard floors though, but my dogs would always manage to have one foot on and one foot off so would end up a mess. The pee pads are the ones that turn to gel when wet, so if I don't change it right away, the gel seems to block the smell. So happy to hear that Haley has a nice backyard! That's great for her. Lacey doesn't mind the rain either, but I still prefer to have her go inside on those rainy days. She seems to stay cleaner that way 😉

Herp Derp Oh yes, Lacey was trained to potty outside but she always had pee pads inside too when she was a puppy. I trained her on this grass mat system when she was around one year old. My little Shih Tzu Miss Tara a shame law uses the potty pads no problem and then when the weather is nice of course we go out but I don't have to worry about it either way cuz she goes right on the potty pads and tell her how wonderful and give her a little you know a little tree and it worked out very well really

Thank you! That's right, no smell. You can also use large disposable puppy pads underneath, that may be easier. When Lacey poos, I pick it up with tissues and flush down the nearby toilet.

I just purchased the indoor grass potty . And I used your idea for the litter genie +litter . It’s been hot out here and my poor chi mix is out here suffering . Plus I think she has some environmental allergies . Hopefully she takes to the grass 🙏🏽 can I ask did u spray anything on the grass to make your pup go there ? And is the litter unscented ? All ima say is it’s been hard trying to train my baby to go on the peepee pad as I recently adopted her . She has gone once since I’ve had her maybe a week . Chelle Mickens Aww, your poor little pup. It has been really hot here in PA also. The grass mat that we have has a dog attractant in it already. I do think that you can buy a spray, maybe that will help. Yes, the litter is definitely unscented. If you get tired of using the litter, you can use pee pads underneath, but you would have to change them out frequently so that they don't smell. Best of luck to you! ❤

Hey, everyone poops! My rescue Shih-Tzu Smokey will go on the pee pee pads in the house, as well as going potty outside. When it’s really cold or rainy, it’s invaluable. I also needed to have surgery and was laid up for a few weeks this winter, and it allowed Smokey to do his business without me having to struggle bringing him out several times a day.

Lucie Arruda Gosh, no real magic here. This system has a dog scent in the mat to make them want to go. If you have a different brand, that may be the problem. There are also liquid sprays that you can put on the mat to attract your puppy. Good luck!! 🐾🐶

The kitty litter has been working great for us. You could also use training pads underneath the grass mat, if that is easier.

Victoria m So sorry that you are having trouble with your furbaby. There are many similar types of dog grass mats that may not be as well made, etc. Our mats have the dog attractant woven into them, so Lacey always uses it. Good luck!

I've got a Maltese shihtzu and I'm condemning one of these potties When the dog poops do you just have to wash it and when she pees do you have to wash the mat as well? How do you teach your dog to use it ? My dog will probably shred up the grass...

S Santos Oh, your welcome. I have two grass mats and clean each one, once a week with water and a little mild detergent in a bathtub that has a sprayer hose, makes it so much easier to rinse. While that one is drying, I use the other one ;)

After a couple years since the video posting, how has the artificial grass held up after all the washing and cleaning? Have you had to buy more than the 1 extra grass pad since you rotate? My concern is the grass has the attractant initially, but how does that effectiveness hold up once it's gone? Does Lacey still go on it? I assume by the time it's worn off, a dog would be trained enough to go despite the attractant dissipating right?

+enkaisu The artificial grass has held up very well. I did throw out the two original mats after a few years because they did seem to start to smell. I bought two new ones last January. I noticed that the company seemed to have improved the quality of the mats. I don't think that the dog attractant had dissipated at all. Lacey has always used any mats that I had for her and we still use this system. Maybe that is right, the dog is trained to know to go on the mat, even if the attractant wasn't on the mats any more?

Thanks for answering all my questions! I've been thinking of doing a DIY version myself with washing machine tray, kitty litter and fake grass... Or maybe substituting those for real potting soil and sod with the tray. Whatever is more economical and perhaps less smelly and easier to deal with.

Barrie Hazoot I wash the grass mat in a tub that has a sprayer attachment (so much easier for rinsing) with a dog enzymes liquid - twice a week. While one mat is drying, I use the second one that I have on hand.

I've been wanting to get an indoor potty (instead of just using pee-pee pads) & this PupHead one looks wonderful b/c you can use cat litter under the grass mat!!! What brand of cat litter do you use? Looks like scoopable litter of some kind? Would solve a huge problem if my Shih Tzu KrissieJoy & my Maltese Kosmo would use this!!! how did the poop go through the grass to the PRESENT in the litter? I have a yorkie...we live in colorado. He wont go outside when there's to much snow

Charles Chapman The poo just sits on top of the grass mat, I flush it down the toilet. Only the liquid can go through. Having an inside dog potty is the best!

Thank you! Yes, Lacey sure does swallow those treats fast and her regular food too ;) I found that the cheap pads aren't the best for smell and I also tried the more expensive that are supposed to 'cover' the smell, but the cat litter works well for us. Thanks for watching! xoxoxo
