Can I ask, why leave the legs longer then the body and ears longer too? Dog looked really sad and with ears shorter, they have more character, but good job tho ok

Poor baby, they look terrified, does grooming traumatise Shih tzu’s? I have to put my 6 month boy in to get a full groom but I have concerns that he will be so scared and stressed.

You should begin introductory grooming at the groomers(nail trims, bath, facial trims, brushing, etc) at 14-16 weeks. The longer you wait, the more time and more stress your pup will be put through. Don’t expect perfection his first time, go to a well reviewed professional groomer and stress that you want his first groom to be a positive experience, with less focus on the end result and more focus on introducing him to the process. Your groomer will likely feel relieved and love you for that! We hate when owners expect a groom like this on a puppy that has no idea why we are touching their feet, holding their face, brushing their coat, moving them in different positions, etc... As for the pup in the video, she has been trained to stand still for her safety during the groom and is doing a great job. I haven’t seen any panicking, shaking, yelping, pulling away, wiggling, etc. Not every dog will love being groomed but she is certainly not traumatized... I have worked with a lot of dogs that have been traumatized by the grooming experience and it looks nothing like this pup.

@@monicam9328 I am so glad to hear that, I took my Shih Tzu for his first groom about 2 months ago at Pets at Home, the groomer told me he peed with fear and stress, it brought tears to my eyes, I was distressed about that as my fur baby means everything to me and gave her so much cuddles and comfort telling her it’s ok now, she was fine excited to see me, but just wondered during the process if they were gentle and wasn’t happy to be told she weed because she was scared. I decided not to take her to a groom again and bought a groom kit and did it myself the second time around and she was calm and enjoyed her bath as I did it with extra gentleness and speaking softly to her, groomers need to realise that the dogs don’t know what is happening to them and need to be so very gentle and talk to them to let them know it’s going to be ok, I have seen horror stories and I would go ballistic if they did that to my Cody. My grooming was not as near as good as to how groomers are trained in cutting shaping bathing and nail clipping, but at least Cody was relaxed and the more I do it the more better it will become in shaping her, I still haven’t cut her nails as I am scared I clip her to the quick and plus she doesn’t stand still for me to do it, I would like to take her to a professional but would like to be there to watch and keep her calm.

@@pennywinstanley7975 Pets at Home is a chain store in the UK, isn’t it? I’m in the US so we have Petco and Petsmart. They typically have much stricter rules on handling, however, their groomers may or not be experienced. An understanding of dog psychology is not required, at least here across the pond. As for your puppy weeing, urinary incontinence is very common in puppies because they have poor bladder control, even with the gentlest of handling. I had a young puppy wee on my hand every time I picked up his paw! He wasn’t in a state of total distress and shut down, but more nervous and overexcited. I’ve also had puppies pee when they are more stressed, despite my efforts to calm them, because the new sounds, tools, and handling are too overwhelming for them, which is why early grooming is so important. I know several groomers that refuse to perform a full service haircut(clippers, face shaping and the like) until the puppy has had a certain amount of appointments or is comfortable with it, to reduce an overly stressful or traumatic first groom. Some advice for finding a good groomer and wanting to watch the groom or nail trim - unfortunately, many groomers will refuse to allow you to remain by your dog’s side for a service. This isn’t because they want to hide secretly abusive tactics from you(in most cases), but because as groomers we need your dog to be comfortable with us and learn how to focus on us. Imagine trying to clip around a puppy’s eyes or trim their nails, when you, the most important thing in their life, is right beside them! Your puppy might freak out, try to get away from us and back to you, and while you attempt to soothe, your dog struggles more to jump back into your arms. I would discuss this with the groomer beforehand and be honest with your concerns. Some groomers might prefer you watch footage or video call them. Sometimes the dog is totally fine after all. Two more quick tips: if you find a groomer you like, act totally calm during check in and pick up, body posture, tone of voice, everything. This is for your dog’s sake - oftentimes owners want to coddle and baby talk but in many cases that can miscommunicate to your dog that you are nervous and whatever happening is a big deal so your dog should be nervous as well. Last tip for nail trims, handle your dog’s paws regularly and give her a reward(praise, treat, or play) each time. After she is ok with you merely touching her paws, begin holding them still, fiddling with her toes, and gently pushing the hair away from the nail as you would for a nail trim. Continue the reward process and she will hopefully be a little less scared for her nail trim. Regular walks on the road or sidewalk will help her nails file naturally and not become too overgrown in the meantime. I wish you and your pup the best, many shih tzus have a reputation for being stubborn little butts for grooming, but hopefully with regular training yours can be as comfortable as the one in this video. :)
