Wow this is the first time I watched this channel and Keith Shilian is great. He knows everything about Bo Nickal and is smart enough to say "He has been training for 2 years, that's why he is fighting Cody Brundage" cuz most people really don't understand how time and improvement works. They want him to fight a top 10 when he is 5-0 and never got hit. LOL
@sherdog5 ай бұрын
1) Keith is very good at this. 2) Keith has probably watched more tape on Bo Nickal than anyone other than maybe Cael Sanderson and Bo's dad. 3) Keith totally wants Bo to be fighting Top 5 guys right now, but I told him I'd cut off his mic if he got carried away. Joking aside, I think we both believe in Nickal as a likely future contender and possible future champ, and I'm actually really happy the UFC has been bringing him along in such a conservative manner. And that goes all the way back to before he was actually in the UFC. There was no real reason to make him fight twice on the Contender Series, but I'm glad they did. [ben]

@@sherdog yessir. And that credit also goes to his management team First Round Management, Malki Kawa. He is also the manager of Ilia Topuira. And ofc guys like Jon Jones, Jorge Masvidal and many more greats. He was in an interview with Ariel 2 years ago and said Bo will be what Jon Jones is supposed to be. Ofc that's a crazy statement considering Jon is the Goat but still. He also said he could've put Bo in the ufc without even putting him on DWCS first, and make him challenge the title in 2 years. But he wants to take it slow and give Bo the necessary time and fights for his improvement

@@keithshillan627 That is quite true about Rakic! Also it's been nearly 2 years since he last fought so.... he might surprise everyone in some way by appearing as "Rakic 2.0". How many more ‘wins in a row’ does Kyle Nelson need, before he sniffs title contention? I think 3 more wins in a row and he could find himself in a title eliminator bout.
@sherdog5 ай бұрын
[ben] I'd say three at the very least. He's operating in a brutal division, though it helps that a lot of the UFC FW Top 10 are aging guys who have fought each other a million times. Also, he doesn't really have any of the traits that sometimes let a fighter jump the line; e.g., a memorable look, big personality, established rivalry with the champ. He's entertaining enough, but he isn't exactly Ige or Landwehr in that department. So yeah, I think he probably has to make the climb like anyone else, and while it's really cool that he's fighting the best he ever has right now, it might be asking a lot for him to win three more fights, especially as he gets close to the rankings. Look at it this way: I would have a hard time favoring him over Kattar or Sterling on Saturday, and that's exactly the kind of matchups he's headed for.

Hey guys, can you address how the Brazilian name changed work sometime? Do they get to change them whenever they want to whatever they want or are there limitations? You know what I’m asking. Thanks!
@sherdog5 ай бұрын
[ben] Hey! I can speak on this subject a little bit, since I ran the Sherdog Fight Finder for a year or so, and am still semi-involved in what's going on. We are pretty conservative when it comes to fighter nicknames vs. fighter real names. Our goals are clarity, respect, and consistency, probably in that order. We don't love when fighters constantly change nicknames (for one, it's a lot of work) but as long as they are identified by their official name, it isn't a huge deal if (for example) Hector Lombard wanted to switch back and forth between "Lightning" and "Showeather" all the time. In Brazil, nicknames are a huge part of sporting culture and a lot of athletes are known primarily by their nickname, so it's sometimes difficult to balance. There are only a very few fighters that we identify by their nickname in the database. Most of them are Brazilian, but regardless of where they're from, our decision to use the nickname is usually due to a combination of factors: being synonymous with the nickname...plus some other factor. In the case of Renan Barao, he's synonymous with the nickname, plus his real name is a mile long. In the case of Gleison Tibau, he's synonymous with the nickname, plus he started going by it so early in his career that he was in the UFC for years before most people even realized "Tibau" wasn't one of his surnames, but the beach he used to hang around. (That isn't exclusive to Brazilians, by the way: Cub Swanson has been going by his nickname for so long that most people don't even know his real name is Kevin, so "Cub" got grandfathered in.) Just being synonymous with the nickname usually isn't enough by itself, which is why we still have Cristiane Justino, Ronaldo Souza, and Mirko Filipovic in the database under actual names. What's really starting to make things challenging for us is Asian fighter names. For example, muay thai fighters give themselves long nicknames that are a mashup of their own name, their team affiliation, their hometown or their sponsors, so you get handles like "Tawanchai P.K. Saenchaimuaythaigym" and "Loma Lookboonmee," they often change them at will, and sometimes they don't even resemble the fighter's legal name. And that's even assuming that the fighters' "real" names fit easily into Western-style classification, which my goodness they do not. Case in point: former UFC and current ONE fighter Aung La Nsang is from Myanmar. Nsang isn't his last name. He doesn't have a last name, in the sense of a family surname like an American or Mexican or Japanese fighter would. That creates challenges when it comes to something as simple as alphabetizing.
