My age 71yr old from Scotland my grandfather Blue left North Ireland when my dad was young for work my grandfather Blue always carried his blackthorn walking stick I remember the thorns on it I don't know what happened to the walking stick but I have a few at home it's one of the only thing you can carry in the UK for self defence
@anthonystorey295322 күн бұрын
Don't addmit to carrying your stick for self defense whatever the circumstances, the law is stacked on the side of the aggressor, your defense imo would say you needed the stick as a walking aid , and in the fracas that you were in fear for your wellbeing, stay safe 😊

Need to get you to look into the combat weapon of my people, the hockey stick :P Seriously though, the hurley stick do kinda remind me of a hockey stick. Would also be interested in you looking at a gunstock club such as the Cree or Ojibwe (O-jib-way) would use.
@larkop65048 күн бұрын
You make a good point about the hurl, its relatively light, well balanced and can get you out of tricky situations, if used thin edge on it can inflict some serious damage.

The shaft looks so thin I’m wondering how much weight it would support as a real walking stick/cane.

A local museum has a shorter fighting club/swagger stick from Somalia with fancy engraving and a hidden dagger like a sword cane. From my limited knowledge of global traditions it impressed me as bit like the Irish or Zulu style club but with a surprise. And it left me wondering, has anyone here encountered antique examples of shillelaghs with hidden blades? I can find only minor evidence of such things via web search.

yes, there are quite a few examples of one with a hidden sword cane, theyre expensive, see about 6-7 really good examples, usually with a bit of silver and Masonic

I like your unique stick. Ive been keeping my eye out for a similar one whenever I go out to the bush looking for sticks for canes. Im starting to think that we simply dont have that type of tree where Im from. Saskatchewan Canada, mind you Saskatchewan is a HUGE place, so maybe, just maybe, Ill come across one some day. Oh come on man, with the wooden one that wasnt lead loaded you gave the melon a light bonk and then with the lead loaded one you actually reeled back and swung at it full force. Sure there's a definite difference to lead loading but you went WAY harder on the melon with the one that's lead loaded, of course it's going to damn explode like that after you already hit it once with the one beforehand and then hit it with the heavier one. I wouldve gotten two melons and struck them both the exact same way each time. Not give it a light thud with the lighter cane and then give it an absolute whallop with the lead loaded one. It just doesn't provide a good enough comparison. And what about the structural integrity after lead loading a cane like that? Does it affect it at all?
