Shimano 105 11-32 Cassette With Short Cage Derailleur?

My bike originally came with a 11-28 cassette and a short cage derailleur (Shimano 105 R7000) and unless you've got a good W/kg 28 is too small to spin up steep climbs. So I put a 11-32 cassette on.
I can't get the derailleur far enough away from the 32t sprocket so here I'm fitting a cheap copy of a Wolf Tooth Road Link which allows the derailleur to sit further away from the cassette with mixed results.

thanks for the video. I was considering a ss on a 32 just now. Another problem is that you are required to have the fore aft adjust back and that tightens the chain which increases wear

I wish I saw this before trying to get an 11-30 on my 105 setup (Cranks are 34-50T). If I cross chained big to big the derailleur would get caught. In the end I bit the bullet and got the medium cage derailleur which got me working with an 11-34 cassette. Much better on the hills and no more stress getting the wrong gear combination and potentially damaging the Derailleur.

Hearing your RD after the build I think i'll stick to my 11-30 cassette for now (my crank is 36T, though 🤔).

Take the B screw out and screw it in from the other side it may give you that bit more clearance as it's head should stick out further

@@mikefreitas1331 worked for me as well. The chain rubs a little on small -small but it does not do harm and you should not be there anyway. The extender did not work for me either for the same reasons

That rear derailleur is actually a Shimano 105 RD-5800 not a RD-7000. The RD-58000 doesn’t have the newer shadow style design

@@DarrenMansell Thought so. It looks like my old Tiagra 4700 rear derailleur. I went from Tiagra with12-28 to 105 with 11-32 for the same reason as Darren (had to change the shifters too).

I use a longer B screw. As simple as that.

Once the B screw is pushing the derailleur all of the way past where it can push it then a longer B screw won't do anything. It didn't work for me.

Has the hack ended up working well for you? I just moved up to a 32 today being a heavier bloke wanting to have an easier ride up the hills. I’ve got enough, but, on sitting on the side of caution for now. I’m planning my first ride on it tomorrow.

I didn't do this, I got the medium cage derailleur instead because I couldn't get a 32 to fit the short cage

Don, really sorry but I don't know. I'd suggest searching Google for the engineers manual for the specific RD (e.g. RD-4601-GS) and looking for the max sprocket size it'll support. If Shimano say the max is 30 then you're always going to struggle with a 32 because they should know.

Will this work with my old model ultegra 6700short cage 10 speed? I'm currently running 11-28 cassette. If 10-34 doesn't work, then can I try 10-32? Please advise. Thanks in advance

I don't really know about ultegra. I think they're a bit tighter on clearance though so you might find 11-30 is about the limit. Anything more you'd need the medium (long) cage but you'll have to research it.

I weigh 85 kg. My bike weighs 10 kg. To go up a 15% incline with a cadence of 60rpm on a 34*28 I'd need to be putting out 582 watts or 6.8 watts / kg. About what Tour De France winners put out. I'm afraid I'm not at that level.

@@DarrenMansell oh shit! now i understand! im light weight so a 23/25 will suffice most of the time, i went to some 20'ish % hills and never needed more than 25, if i go higher its bad for me i get burnt, to high cadence for me its bad in the long run
