It’s when they are left wet they could fail. It’s been common in humid countries. Keep them clean and dry. 9000 is the best looking.

Not exactly. There are a number of factors involved including wet weather, humidity, salts in your cleaning solutions/product and so on.

@@waisinglee1509Don’t use Muc off with salt in. Use normal car wash shampoo. I’m not sending mine back for recall. I’m confident they’ll last for many years. I’ve never seen one unbonded.

I've only got a 6800 on an older bike no issues and that crank did lots of work. I ride in dry conditions mostly so feel confident that its fine. My newer bikes now use sram and campy cranks matched upto shimano

Glad I skipped the Shimano crankset portion of the Ultrgra groupset and went with a Praxis crank.

I have a 6800 that was subject to the recall, I stopped using it years ago because we were starting to see failures and I didn't want to risk it. So I kept the crank assuming there would be a recall that just never came. So my crank passed the inspection, but I'm still not comfortable using it, my local bike shops have seen many failed cranks during this recall but I'd rather not find myself on the ground because of this.

@@thisandthatandotherthings Yeah, humid n a bit salty to boot. I have had cheap steel nuts and bolts corrode after a few years. I was just checking out Rene Herse cranks as a replacement.

I believe that it's about 4,500 known failures from around 2.8 million cranksets

@@robgullen It's at least 4,518 REPORTED failures in the US and Canada. There are 2.8 million cranksets involved globally. A bike dealer on YT reported that one of his customers experienced a crank failure every year and that the problem is common.

@@-Steve-01 Update from Shimano Singapore now covers two free checks. Then, you're on your own. I decided not to waste my time and ordered a new Ultegra crank replacement on my own dime.
