I've got 40lb braid, tension high, two brakes on. With heavy lures I get great casts and no backlash. One of my favorite reals. Have it paired with a heavy rod and it rocks.

You should use braided line (with a around 6 feet fluorocarbon or monofilament leader) as we use on swimbait rods for pike fishing in Europe 👍

Was thinking about getting the 6:6:1 think that would work best for what your doing. Just got a irg804sb-h baileys swim 7,11. Going to put the 6:6:1 on it. Good lick. Also fishing from a boat higher speed reels are nice. Also i use 30 lbs braid line and the a 15 to 20 lbs leader. Go a little longer on leader. So it will absorb some of the force from casting. You can snap off your swimbait with out a longer leader.

Little late to be posting on this video. There is a direct rival to this reel that you missed. The Tatula 200 is same (slightly more) capacity reel. Diawa and Shimano measure slightly differently. I’m one of those rare people that likes both Shimano and Diawa equally..... i love my DC Curados and Scorpions... but the standard Curado cannot hold a candle to the Tatula 150. The Curado 300 cannot hold a candle to the Tatula 200. I’d love to see you break down these reels against each other.

Alright man, I'm what you would call a "swimbait guy" I guess so I'll try to help you with some of your questions. 1) DEFINITELY get the faster gear ratio if you're Fishing in current. However, lure choices make a difference. Slower speed for bottom baits like Huddleston swimbaits and faster for glide baits and multi joint baits. 2) 20lb test is fine, just not the kind you spooled with. You can get away with 17 for the baits you have in the video but most swimbait fishermen either use 20-30lb line, or 65-80lb braid to a leader. I prefer 25lb trikfish Copolymer for all my swimbait needs because I hate braid. 3) The savage gear shine glide (yes, it's still in production) and the s waver you have in the video are the two best baits you have by far. It looks like you're using the smaller versions of both though. Upgrade to the 7 inch shine glide and 168 S waver. The savage gear falls faster and has a slightly smoother glide and is also less noisy due to the bumpers in the joint. The s waver is much more reactive and loud and has a tighter glide in the water and also falls a little slower. If you thought the shine glide looked good in the water, wait until you upgrade and get into swimbait fishing heavy and you see a Deps 250 slide swimmer in the water for the first time!

They feel and sound a little gear-y (especially the 8.1:1) compared to comparable Shimano/Daiwa/Lews/Abu reels I have, but for the price they work very well, cast pretty dang far, and I've used mine several times now at Port Aransas from the shore and caught some big reds, black drum, and even a huge stingray. 33lbs of max drag is no joke!

I've been fishing full days with 4-5oz rubber baits without problems throwing up to 70-80 yards. But I'm used to it. I would probably have problems with bait finesse, not feeling the load up of the rod and the pull on the line.

One thing that helped me cast big baits farther is purchasing rods that have longer handles. I used to use the Dobyns Champion 806 and 807, but I made the switch to the Low Down Customs White Label 8'H for most of my treble hook baits and the White Label 8'XH mostly for top hook/jig hook baits. Having that longer, beefier handle has given me LOTS of confidence throwing big baits. To be fair, I am 6'3, so having a longer handle than 16" has made a WORLD of difference for me. I throw my treble hook baits on a Shimano Tranx 300 and my softbaits on a Shimano Calcutta 400TE (old, but tried and true reel). Having a reel that has a non-disengaging level wind, or even the T-Wing system from Daiwa, does help in terms of helping with accuracy and distance. The LDC Rods are all true to their lure ratings, so if you want to purchase one when they are available again, buy with confidence! I recommend the 8'XH as your starting point. It will handle just about anything you throw at it. Welcome to the world of big baits! Also, I know you religiously set your spool tension to minimize the side to side play, but try to loosen it up just a bit. It will help with casting distance.

Best not to cast really hard with the big swimbaits on there. Because if something hangs up. Your going to watch you 20$ 100$ lure going flying away to never be seen again. If your using a bigger swimbaits then your rod can cast. Side hand the cast. Don’t cant super hard. Your shoulder / arm will be dead by end of s few hours.

I have a couple of those savage sliders, they are hard to come by. Also my 300 casts those heavy swimbaits better if you take about an 1/8” of line off.

I have the same rod, but with a Tatula 200, and have been swimbaiting for many years. 20 lb is to heavy for that 1 oz lure. 12 or 15 would be better. also, do not rely on the brakes, take some off and use your thumb to bomb cast's. I can throw a 6" Hudd way further than what that 1oz lure is doing, it's at the lower end of the sweet spot for the 783sb rod. With the heavier baits, let a foot more line out before casting. Sheesh, a try tossing an 8 and 10" with a Curado 301E for 8 hrs..

I have two different swimbait setups. For top hook/jig hook baits like a Hudd or a Defiant I use a minimum of 65 lb braid to a 30 lb mono or fluoro shock leader. For treble hook glides I use 22-25 lb fluoro minimum and more often than not it’s 30 lb. A Medium Heavy is definitely NOT the right rod to be throwing “Big Swimbaits” on. Heavy or XX heavy at a minimum. Here are a few examples of rods. Dobyns 806 is the minimum, thats a 8 ft 6 power rod. Megabass Leviathan 8 ft rod 10 power Extreme Heavy rated at 2-8 Ounces. My “Big Swimbait Rod” is a Megabass TS Destroyer King of Baccarat, it’s a 7 ft 8 10 power rated from 3-15 ounces and 16-40 lb line rating. This is just the start and I only listed the lower end and exteme top end. It’s how far down the rabbit hole you want to go!

20 lb line definitely not to big with the more expensive flouro's. I actually throw 22-25lb sunline flippin fc, 17-20lb abraz x with most of my swimbaits. That particular line is just really thick compared to most other lines.

You need to pull about 75 yds of your line put a hook on it hook it to something and reel your line real tight about a hour then cast it out to see what it will do I put my pole on the other side of my truck let the line go a cross the the truck that is stretching out your line real tight do that let know what you think about it

You can't whip a swim bait. You have to follow the momentum and place it carefully in comparison. And yes, it is tiresome. In Sweden a 4oz bait for pike is avg. My friend loves the 300k for "downsize" baits. Also, braid is preferred.

You are trying to cast this the same way you do with BFS or small bass reels which definitely leads to such poor results , the weight of these lures takes them down very fast so as rule of thumb you should not cast into the water like you are doing , it should be on the air up so that it takes a parabola and falls as far as possible into the water … you are driving excuses which are not valid , Shimano using theses brakes since ages in its Tranx and before in the old curado … good luck man
