Thank you very much Julian for the fantastic video. You have answered all the questions I had in order to change the 11-34 casette to the 11-40. Greetings from Spain!!!

Smart move. Having worked as a cycling guide in France and Spain, a 40t cassette with a compact front chainset (46/30) or (50/34) would be the ideal for most riders.

Does it still work after 2 Years? What about the dents in the deraillieur extension from the B-Screw? Thanks IMCR

Good idea. The gearing on many 2 x and 1 x gravel bikes simply isnt low enough for a wide variety of terrain unless you have the legs and lungs of a pro or near that capacity.

Well explained - very clear what is required, and it's pretty straightforward so anyone thinking about doing this and taking it to a dealer to get it done... Don't! Do it yourself, it'll be cheaper and a lot more satisfying. Big up to Simon too!

I would like to see the large large shifting. In the heat of the moment it is possible to shift it (by mistake) and than it should work, otherwise you are in trouble. So, my rule is: it should work if you are able to shift the combination. Otherwise it doesn´s work. But it´s a clear video with a gooe explanation how things work

Thanks, that was very interesting. I had to stop & rerun the first 2-3 minutes because I am as thick as a brick but I got there in the end. Have a great time in the Alps. 👍🏼

11-51t cassette with 53-39t crank on road bike?
@ibe966

If you want to safely use a larger cassette with GRX-RX810, you need to get a derailleur extension. The Wolftooth RoadLink DM is what I use with an 11-40t. Once it's installed you can use an 11-36t, 11-40t, or 11-42t 11-speed cassette. I'd also recommend getting a new chain and cut the length so that you can shift big-big (to prevent jamming), even though it's something that shouldn't be used.
@paddyotoole2058
@paddyotoole2058 Жыл бұрын
No you don’t need any road link extension. With the GRX 810 derailleur there is sufficient B screw adjustment to run a 40 cassette no problem and just like the guy in this video has demonstrated. Been running it like this for the last 18 months myself without any problems at all and loads of others are doing the same. I run it with the correct length chain, and big big is doable no probs (although I don’t generally do it). Shifting is perfect.

Well done, I do not think you will have any problems but running out side the recommended areas can be a problem in just the right environment. So never hurts to watch the mechanical as you travel and check it often and be sure to check it each night before the next days ride. I run a 50 on mine with a non shimano chain thats a bit lighter. I am not sure how long it will last but I would recommend to only use a shimano chain. I do not intend to use it on a long century, just around town for easy ridding where people and dogs get in the way.
@davidburgess741

That should get you up anything. Just be careful not to use that big-big combination even in a senior moment! Adding links might make the chain too loose in small- small. This kind of tinkering is fun.

I love this video. However, you're possibly misleading thousands (OK, several) into believing that this process is quite a bit easier than it actually is. This adjustment is not trivial, and in my case at least, has led to copious cursing and not a few tears, on multiple occasions. My main rule with b and limit screws, once you have them properly adjusted, is this: DO NOT TOUCH THEM EVER AGAIN. They can be a nightmare to adjust; through some satanic entanglement principle that only applies to bicycles, pfaffing around with one screw will influence the adjustment of the others, ad infinitum, especially if you don't know what the f* you're doing. And then there's the added pfaff of indexing to match the newly adjusted limit screws, which often leads to gears shifting smoothly in one part of the range, but horridly in another part. (Sometimes I dream of going back to friction shifting for this reason.) Of course, if you swap in a larger cassette, you're going to have to move everything around, but for most people it's going to be an enormous PITA, and one ought to be forthcoming about that. :) Enjoy your ride in the alps!
