Don’t worry, Frederico, you were always relevant. I always knew by 105 was superior!

I have owned 2 of the effected cranks. A Dura-ace 9000 and a Ultegra 6800. BOTH have failed! That is a 100% failure rate. The first in 2017, which Shimano did nothing about. I bought a replacement for the Dura-ace 9000 left crank arm that failed. So when the 6800 started separating, I replaced it before it broke, so it didn't kill me. I never reported it to Shimano because I knew they would do nothing about it. Now that the recall is official, the number of reported failures is going to soar! Far beyond the 4519 they say they are aware of. But I think they have waited to issue the recall for over 4 years, when they knew there was a big problem, because a lot of those affected cranks have already failed, been thrown in the trash, and replaced already. And now, no longer available for inspection. So Shimano is off the hook. Very sleezy in my opinion.

I know a couple of guys who’ve had failures fortunately without injury. Fortunately my Ultegra crank is a later date. But the episode and late admission has dented the once solid reputation of Shimano.

That's a good point about mechanical shifting being actually more refined than the new electronic one. I always thought that some time from now the mechanical will be offered again as the one truly in the spirit of a muscle powered vehicle and a pinnacle of human craftsmanship.

I'm sure the electric shifting is awesome but I am more than happy with my mechanical 105 works just fine, did break a cable once at about 4700 miles other than that a couple turns on the barrel adjuster is all and no recall 🤙

You have a good point 👉☝️ at the electronic - mechanical groupset overall cost &€...As a user of an electronic groupset, I say how not to like it? It never fails, you just press a little button to shif, you can shift one by one, or three at a time, or even all of it - up and down! Man, you try it you love it, I'm warning you 😅..big hug 🙂🚴 from Portugal.

I think the reason they can still demand such a high price is because it works so well, yes.

I am affected by the read all I have Ultegra Di2 but my cranks seem fine. I think a lot of the problems are from people in humid hotter conditions this came from Peak Torque. A lot of Aussies have had issues for instance. By the way I love ❤️ the content it’s refreshing and informative Ciao.

The DA 7800 ang Ultegra 6700 were the last hollowtech cranks that are welded then machined instead of the current faster process of machining before being bonded.

Don't believe the hype my friend, most people in the world DO NOT ride electronic shifting disc brake bikes. BTW most people DO NOT have an Apple iPhone either.

Got R7000 groupset for exactly this reason oh and the RD adjuster on ultegra is awful. If I'm honest this is a terrible look for Shimano their reputation for high quality and reliability has taken a serious dent by not acting way way sooner there was report's of this ages ago from riders.

Excellent content as always 👌🏾 I have a few of these ultegra cranks which I have ridden hard since 2018 and have had no issues whatsoever thus far. I will however need to check and see whether they fall within the affected batches.

@@fede1275 I’ve got this groupset on my cyclocross winter bike and luckily I haven’t had any issues yet 🤞🏾. The other is on my summer bike which doesn’t go out in the rain. It is however a disgrace though as at that price it should be able to withstand any weather conditions and shimano have known about this issue for 11 plus years!!

My crankset is the Dura-Ace FC-9000 and it is one of those listed having this issue. But even after 5 years mine doesn't show any signs of the failure. I'm going to continue using it until it fails and then switch to another brand like White Industries VBC cranks. The more the companies try producing light weight products the more this industry has problems so I've learned my lessons the hard way and have moved away from that over-priced junk. Shimano charging $4400 for a new DA groupset tells me they are covering themselves from any future recalls ahead of time to minimize their loses.

New prices are beyond comprehension! You should be okay if yours does not show any symptoms, it seems they would not replace them anyway if so.

Thank You for your input. Personally I'm a Campagnolo guy. I trust their products. I presently now using a Chorus 12 speed mechanical group set with rim brakes. Often I mixed components when I formerly built up my own frames. And I just subscribed!

Interesting and detailed video Federico. Thankfully with GRX 800 and Sora I'm not affected but I wonder how many riders who are not connected to the internet etc will never find out about the recall and first know about it when they suffer crank failures.

Yes, and many that had a failure and had to repair or replace at their expense.
@Millicente

I think it's simply the parts for electronic is more expensive than the mechanical and mechanical is pretty much done evolving, there's no R&D or changes to really make, they've been making the same thing for a long time now. No doubt that a company just charges more to create product tiers though. I'd do the same if I ran a business. Also I believe bike companies are only shifting to lightweight bikes now because there's nothing more to be done for aero and they need something to market.
