Stradic SW 5000 and up is simply a rebadged Saragosa SW with small changes. Stradic SW 4000 is actually based on Stradic FL, it uses a worm gear and has tight line management. Stradic SW 5000 is internally identical to Saragosa SW 5000. SAME WITH 6000 and bigger sizes. The only difference is that saragosa has different spool design with stronger drag system and a drag clicker is sealed inside the spool. The Stradic SW 5000 and up has identical body to Saragosa, but it has simplified spool support, less powerful drag, and regular drag clicker. I actually tried fitting a spool from 6000 Saragosa onto a 6000 stradic and it was easily achieved by swapping few washers on the main shaft that support the spool. Stradic SW has more gear options and most sizes are available in PG, HG, and XG. But Saragosa SW has much bigger sizes available for heavy duty offshore fishing

I though you would pick up on some of the sneaky footage from our WP session. Yeah its been a while between product reviews. Much of that is driven by the fact that there hasn't been many exciting products released in the fishing market yet in 2021. I watch the Shimano, Daiwa and other manufacturers road maps very closely. Most new releases have been variations of existing products and quite minor changes. Much of this may be driven by COVID impact last year and slow manufacturing. Really hoping i can cover some new and exciting products as things progress.

Hi Alan I really enjoy your content mate,. I have say though I found this video a little misleading, your review is great but I think it gives the impression the 2 models are made differently, when in fact they are virtually identical. Other than the the Stradic SW 4000 which is a Stradic FL in blue, sizes 5000 - 10000 between the Stradic SW and Gosa SW-A are almost identical. I’ve copied the differences below directly from Alan Hawks website, I highly recommend giving it a read in his blog section: 1) The 20' Stradic SW reels have drag washers in a top stack arrangement only, while the equivalent 20' Saragosa SW-A reels have an extra drag washer beneath the spool in addition to the top stack. And because the drag clicker of the 5K to 14K Saragosa is an integral part of the bottom drag unit, the clicker of the Stradic is different since its spool doesn't have that bottom drag. 2) The 20' Stradic SW has a ball handle grip instead of the egg-shaped grip of the 20' Saragosa SW-A. That ball grip of the Stradic is mounted on one ball bearing and one bushing, while the egg-shaped one in the Saragosa rides on two bushings. This is why the bearing count in the Stradic is 6+1 versus only 5+1 in 5K to 14K Saragosas. 3) Some 20' Stradic SW reels have different gear ratios than their 20' Saragosa SW-A counterparts. 4) Sizes 5K/6K of the 20' Stradic SW have a removable plastic ramp that kicks the bail closed when you turn the handle, meaning these two sizes have automatic bail closure. That plastic ramp is omitted from the 5K/6K sizes of the 20' Saragosa SW-A so they have manual bail closure. Otherwise the 20' Stradic SW has the exact same build as the 20' Saragosa SW including the clutch, locomotive oscillation, bearings, rotor, frame, gearbox housing, handle stem, sealing of the body and line roller, etc. I am not talking about mere similarities, rather about the exact same parts being in both models.

Thanks I really appreciate the honest feedback. The last we want to do is mislead people in anyways. Several of us took multiple Stradic SWs and Multiple Saragosa SWs in different sizes out on several occasions and we used them to really compare the differences. These were very experienced anglers and the main consistent things identified across the group was the Saragosa SW in all the models were slightly heavier and bigger than the Stradic SW. Also that the drag sound was significantly better on the Saragosa SW. There were some minor cosmetic changes like the handles and colours, but we do 100% agree that many of the internal components of the Stradic SW and the Saragosa SW are identical, which is the exact reason why we wanted to test them. Aiming to understand why Shimano would have 2 products with similar specs and price point, aimed at the same market sector. Again thank you for the feedback, we want to ensure the message we are sending is honest and true to the products and will take your feedback onboard. Thanks again !!

Yeah I completely agree, I think you made it seem alot more like the Stradic SW was more like a Stradic than a saragosa made for inshore, don't think this is accurate. @@fishingmad Thanks mate. IMO regardless if one does more inshore or offshore fishing, the saragosa is the superior reel with better sealing and drag clicker design. It's also cheaper than the stradic sw which means it offers more value for money. The saragosa has pedigree unlike the Stradic which received many bad reviews when the first gold jdm model came out a few yrs ago. The one-piece handle on the gosa is a massive improvement over the last 2 models. I had a seizing problem with the swivelling part in the handle and so did my mate, even though we both meticulously look after our gear. Shimano replaced both handles free of charge which is testament to their great customer service.

I fish snapper in port phillip bay on a shimano sienna 4000 $55 and a jarvis walker scorpion 8ft $30. I have all ways used light gear to feel the bite and i love the older style quiver tipped rods. The reel has 8.5kg of drag using 10lb shimano kairikri braid 15lb mono leader. Never been spooled on this setup that includes a 68cm snapper. We got a big eagle ray ~2m across under the boat but ~25min fight but the line touched the boat directly under less than 10m away. Not that you want to keep it any way but nice to get your line upto the swivel back so you dont have to re-tie the fg knot. You have lost me on a $300 reel for non game fish thats 3x the cost of my entire setup that feels super nice.

Of course a sienna can do the job but it is unlikely to last as long as something mid end like the stradic. For most serious anglers, spending money on quality gear just satisfies their consumerism 😅

@danielwut for the amount of sienna's you can buy for the price of those more expensive reels I don't think there worth it. Your initial statement that the saragossa is a bit bigger and heavier is silly and incorect you have a 8000 gosa and 5000 stradic SW in front of you. From 5000 size to 10000 size each of the new Stradic SW and Saragosa of the same size number are the basicaly the same reels ( same frames, sealing and locomotive gear set up) with the the following main differences 1,colour 2, Stradic SW does not have drag washers at the bottom of the spool because of this it has a different clicker configuration to the Saragosa SW 3, style of handle 4, different combinations of gear ratios depending on size. 5, sizes 4000/ 5000/6000SW of the stradic SW have a automatic bail trip mechanism. All saragosa are manual bail 6 the 4000SW stradic is basically the stradic FL complete with worm gear spool oscillation and does not have the sealing of the bigger stradic SW

The Saragosa 5000 weighs 455g the stradic 5000 weighs 430g. The Saragosa 8000 weighs 675g the Stradic 8000 weighs 650g, the Saragosa 10000 weighs 685g the Stradic 10000 weighs 660g. very little different between the 2. The 1400 holds a bit more line the 10000 is 30 grams lighter. id say make the call based on how much line you need as the drag capacity and specs are so similar

The biggest difference between the Gosa 10k and 14k is the gear ratio & retrieve. 14k more suited to throwing stickbaits / lures and the 10k more of a power house

Is the Saragosa a tougher reel?

The construction is very similar between both reels. Not much difference to the internal components. The Saragosa in hand feels like a tougher and more durable reel.

Great video Alan, was wondering if the Saragosa would go alright as a surf reel? Cheers
@fishingmad3 жыл бұрын
100% this reel would be great for the surf, light weight and pretty tough. It does depends on what style you are doing ( lures/metal slugs or bait ). Its very light weight which makes it awesome for casting lures and metals in the surf. I use the 5000 size and its great for that. I also just reviewd the new Slammer 4 which can be seen here kzbin.info/www/bejne/apKsqo2tbp5sibs and that would be a great option aswell. Its a bit heavier but great waterproofing technology to stand up to surf.

@@fishingmad Sorry I had one more question, looking at the Shimano Speedmaster Surf rods. They are a 2019 model and some of the models are hard to find. The two I am looking at are 10 foot 3-6kg and 12 foot 6-10kg, I will be mainly fishing for Salmon, Tailor, Whiting and Bream with it. Any suggestions on which weight class to go with? Cheers

Identical body but 5000 has slightly smaller spool diameter. You can swap spools on 5000-6000 stradics.

Stradic SW for Japanese market, Saragossa is not available in Japan. :) When the Stradic SW was first announced in Japan it was only available there, until recently Australia jump on that too. Same thing to do with the Sephia BB reels. In fact the Sephia range in stock in aus is a older model the 2018 range which is released to Australian market this year :)
@fishingmad3 жыл бұрын
Thanks David, i hope your well!!! Yeah your 100% right. I also noticed that the new Sephia BB is the older 2018 range, which is a really strange move by Shimano when you consider how popular squid fishing is in Australia and the volume of choices from competitor brands. Strange about the Saragosa not being available in Japan as its used by many top anglers all around the world.

@@OPTIMUS6LTR difference is in the gear ratios, I suppose they could have just offered more ratios in the saragosa range but the stradics do look nice and I like the metal ball over the rubber egg. Only the 5000 are both xg, the 6000, 8000 and 10000 are different ratios.

Shimano is like Hypercars Daiwa is like Heavy Duty Trucks
@matthewlee13833 жыл бұрын
Umm NO. Daiwa are known for light, finesse and engineering excellence. Shimano's reels on the other hand are bulky, heavy and I dare say, not as technical - apart from their anti-reverse clutch system. From a weight, sealing and performance perspective, Daiwa is the clear winner.
@hea4nothin3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewlee1383 Umm NO. You’re clearly have not seen and feel all Reels of both kinds, you’re only thinking. For me “I Know” and have all of them, not “I Think”. E.G. Overall a 6000 Shimano is smaller than a 6000 Daiwa, and so on. A LaFerrari is bigger and heavier than a Chevy Super Duty?
@matthewlee13833 жыл бұрын
@@hea4nothin lol. You've just contradicted yourself by saying Hypercars are bigger than Heavy Duty Trucks. My statement is based on experience and feeling both Brands - and yes from small 2500 sizes all the way up to 10,000 big bastards. Not sure what Daiwa reels you've spun, but the ones I have are all much smaller and lighter than the Shimano counterparts.

@@matthewlee1383 Read it again. I didn’t put a Period. I put a Question Mark. LOL, Dude, do you ever paid attention “?” My statement is based on owning all of them, clearly you don’t have all of them.
@matthewlee13833 жыл бұрын
@@hea4nothin I never said I have owned ALL of them, don't really need to. I know that the ones I have used are quite clear that Daiwa reels are lighter, tougher, sealed better, have higher drag outputs than the larger Shimano gear and to a degree - engineered better. I wouldn't call them heavy duty trucks though - that would be Penn or Shimano where you cast and won't even think of holding it for much longer. Not sure what logic you employ where you reverse things around and make it sound like you know more than you actually do ?

Stradics and vanguards are hopeless, bought two of each and have had dramas with all four. Luckily shimanos after sale service is outstanding but doesn't change that they are producing below average reels. Spend a few more bucks and get a daiwa certate!
