When Shimano came out with the 50 TLD 3 speed reel, it was the most rugged affordable 2 speed reel in it's size. Chunking for Tuna is a great use for this reel. I have 2 of these reels mounted on Penn Tuna Sticks. Great for Black fin, and small yellow fin tuna, big grouper. A bit undersized for Blue fin tuna. Over the years, more and more people purchased the 50TLD and didn't bother to read the operators manual, and had the drag set way to high for first strike. The cases were breaking, so Shimano for 2024 discontinued the 50TLD. Now instead of purchasing a $425 reel, you're into a $700 reel. Dennis, the $30 odd dollars for a drag washer is nothing compared to a Penn International where to replace the drag, you're also replacing the pressure plate, since they're a bonded assembly.. For Bobbymiller1672, look up a Daiwa Sealine 900 or 910 Lin Cod reels. The optional handle when mounted makes the reel larger than most boat trailer winches. They make great reels for shark fishing when spooled with wire.

So no drag grease on the new washer? How do you determine which drags get grease or not? Thanks for your videos! CZ

Carbontex and other washers that are non-porous do not get grease as they cannot absorb it. Fabric washers should be greased to help keep them flexible so that they do not dry out. Thanks for asking - Dennis

So if I lightly greased a carbontex washer in the past will it fail to hold?

Don't worry it if it was only lightly greases. What will happen is that the metals will squeeze the grease off of the washer and onto the side case. Nothing to worry - Dennis
