@etchd_2 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, thanks so much! I use the Action for most adventure based trips just because of the size really. But the Action goes with me on most small easy shoots or day shoots where I'm not taking a huge amount. I have a peak design sling but hate it. So uncomfortable. The Action x 30 is still my pick if I could only have one. Simply because the roll top ads an extra 7 litres if i need it. The 30ltr in Explore V2 though is also an epic bag and so comfortable. It could also be a great option if you dont need the roll top!

Just put silicone into those drainage holes and that will solve the problem. I have the Tilopa and now the X50. Also bought the Roller Carry On v2. Still getting used to the the X50. It has lots of features. The harness is awesome. The only major problem I have with it is that it opens for quick access only on the right. I am left handed and when using a Protactic 450AW, I keep the body with lens on the left and another lens on the right. Also unlike the Protactic 450AW the X50 quick access flap opens with the flap cover "in my way" or "in my face" which is not the way I want it. But the protactic is a somewhat camera gear only bag and not so much suited for hiking and camping. For city travelling and shooting the Protactic 450AW is a hard case that offers protection and is less complicated. Only drawback of the Protactic 450AW is the harness is not well suited for long walks with heavy gear. For adventure travel I'll use the X50 or even go back to my Tilopa but the latter is IMO a bit heavy. Nice video review. Daniel Yong.

Hi mate, so sorry for the late reply! Good idea re-silicone! I guess they are there though to drain water in case the bladder leaks ha. Glad you like the X50! That would be annoying having to turn the bag the opposite way. TBH I haven't ever used the side access feature, however I do know people that love it. I totally understand about the size of the Protactic been more useful for shorter trips and day to day shooting. My advice.... Give it a few months and check back :)

I think this is the best review for this pack that I've seen to date. I feel that you have covered pretty much everything. The only item I'd be a little concerned about is the zipper on the camera access cover. It looks like it not only holds that big backflap closed, but also bears the weight of the pack when the waist belt is used. Have you noticed any stress induced reliability issues with that? Cheers.

Hi Chris! So sorry for late reply. I've been absent from yt on some jobs. I'm glad you dig the review. I like to do these the way I'd like to hear them if I was a consumer. I agree the back zipper bears the weight, but I can tell you now there's no issue whatsoever! It's a burly zipper and because the bags pressed against your back there's no room for play anyways. The F stop, wandrd and other brands all open from the back and I'm not sure of anyone who had any issues there! Hope that helps!

Ordered the 30 and 50. Unfortunately, my avy gear + bladder do not fit well in the rear compartment of the 30, its just a little too short for my BCA 270 probe. I'd love the X50 but I'm 5'6" and the rigid frame hits my neck when I try too look up. Short torso'd folk beware, and makes me wish I just had a couple extra inches. Now my question is that I only have a Sony a7iii and the 24-105 lens, and soon the 20 1.8. the only other photography gear I carry is a tripod and filters. Do you think this bag is a little overkill for that little of photography gear. Should I just pick up a normal hiking bag and find a camera insert? Thanks a bunch, I subbed
@etchd_3 жыл бұрын
Hey Sean, thanks so much for the kind words mate! No silly questions here! That's why I created the review! TBH it does sound like the x50 might be a little overkill! that being said, you have plenty of growth options should you want to carry more camera gear in the future, and the bag is bombproof. There aren't too many other bags out there (non camera specific) that are as rugged, nor water resistant. Also without the rear flap, using another insert is a pain in the ass. I have done it before and it wasn't ideal. Sorry I can't be of more help. It really depends on your budget, but for photography practicality, the x50 is the way to go if you can afford it.

Nice video man. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for this review. Was your height the reason why you went for the X30? Because I am small as well and I think that the X50 might be too big. Also, I am not a photographer. Do you think this bag would serve well for hiking/camping trips or city trips as travel bag or do you think it might be overkill for non photographers? Peace :)
@etchd_4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kervin, thanks for the feedback and support! I actually got the x30 because that was my allocation as an ambassador. I was a little late to the party, so the larger ones were already given out. Having said that, its more than enough for most of my trips. The only time I want the larger one is for overnight trips or when I'm needing to carry my video camera and gimbal. I stand 171cm tall and have a quite broad and longer torso, so I have the back straps set to the Large height which is fine. I don't believe that your height will be an issue with the larger bag as you can just put the straps to small. If your waist is smaller than mine, you might need to do the 'belt hack' that I linked below. I might do that too. It would be an awesome bag for hiking and camping trips as it is damn rugged, but still quite light. Because it has the Alu frame inside, it can take a large amount of weight. I wish other outdoor bags had the same straps and pocket layouts as this bag. The only thing I could think of is that if you are wanting the water bladder in another spot and closer to your back, this won't be good for that. Proper non-photographic bags will have the bladder against your back for weight distribution. What would be good for travel is that that you can lay the bag down like a travel bag and access clothes or whatever you want from the back flap. Again, depends on what types of trips you are doing. Hope that helps!
@kervinzamora74384 жыл бұрын
@@etchd_ thanks a lot for spending the time to reply with such enthusiasm. Awesome! ...I am a water bottle kind of guy, so the water bladder issue would never affect me. I also never travel with a laptop so I plan to put the AER Go packable bag in that laptop compartment. I also like the idea that if I wished or needed to, I could hook things to the outside. But one more question: when hiking in the wild or walking in cities...is sweaty back ever a concern? If yes, at what temperatures is an issue? Because hiking backpacks have much more air flow. (I am 165cm and have the same waist as you, so x50 with my height might be too big even with the adjustable shoulder staps probably, but you seem to fit plenty in the X30. I never go to the artic so I should be fine with the x30 haha). Thanks again :)
@etchd_4 жыл бұрын
@@kervinzamora7438 No worries mate. These bags are expensive, so I know how much research people put into everything before purchasing! I know I sure do. Waterbottles are perfect on this bag. I'd even go as far to say that its the best bag I've used hands down for water bottles seen as you can put them either side of the bag and fit one on the chest strap too. With the extra straps on the outside, you can pack a huge amount of gear. It really is quite impressive. It comes with the helmet strap too, which I forgot to show in the review. It's tiny and is great to strap big jackets to the outside of the bag. I hear you on the sweaty back thing. In short, yes you back will sweat much more than other bags. I have an ultra-light Osprey and have owned the Deuter, both of which have mesh suspension net backing. Honestly though, for me as a photographer, I don't really mind. it's something that hasn't ever bothered me, and my back was drenched throughout India with my Explore 40. It does have air channels which help, and the foam doesn't stick to your back which is good. It could def be a concern if all you were doing is hot and humid hiking. I think you will be fine with the shoulder strap length, it's just the belt and chest strap that might be an issue. The x30 fits so much inside! I could do an overnight trip with it if I didn't have camera gear inside. Good luck with whatever decision you arrive at. Remember you can get 10% off if you go through my links. But do shop around regardless :)

Hey mate! Thanks so much for the kind words! It's actually great when it's hardly full. Because of that roll top if sits quite small. The only thing is the straps are quite wide, so it isn't as conspicuous looking. However that doesn't bother me as it's bloody comfortable and I like the look. Always have people asking me about it! If you have an insert inside, you'll not be able to compress its width thigh beyond why the width of the insert is. Again, doesn't really bother me! What camera are you rocking for video? I managed to fit my pocket 4k, EM1MKIII, 5 primes, gorilla pod, video mic pro,, jacket, 4 NPF batteries and whole lot of other things inside it the other day! Hey Jason. Thanks so much for the msg. I personally haven't used an atlas but I've seen them in the flesh. I like the rigidity of the Shimoda bags and the material gives me more confidence in the poor weather. Side mounted bladder could be good, what size does it hold do you know?

@@etchd_ the atlas can fit a osprey 2.5 liter hydration bladder i haven't tried any other brands or sizes.

@@jaysun070476 oh I see! That's pretty decent. You'd want to counter balance that well with gear as it would be horrible on your back after awhile!

@@etchd_ I will get mine this week. Also the Action X30, in green. I'm stocked to get my hands on and also ordered the smaller Inlet that you suggest. Cheers mate! :)

@@BarisYener ahh epic mate! Great choice. Seriously such a good price of kit. I just take it to every job now regardless of whether it looks too adventure haha. I even rock it when shooting weddings. Hope it works out for you!

Have you used the Action X for overnight or do you stick to the Explore for that?
@etchd_4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate! I haven't yet only bevause the 30x is a tad too small and I have the explore 60. That said, if I went minimalist it could easily be done. The 50x would be ideal!

@@etchd_ Are the hip straps on the explore 60 sufficient enough to take the weight off the shoulders well?

@@dcrachuig yes they definitely are. Both systems are great for heavy weight!

Hi, great informative video, thanks! Would you recommend the 30L version over the 50L for mountain hiking 2 to 3 days max? Would I be able to fit a Sony A7R4 + 100-400mm + 24-105mm but also a small tent, sleeping bag, and some usual camping gear? for info, I am the same size as you (1m71) so I thought the 50L might be too big and might also not be allowed as carry-on by some airlines? thanks for your input. JM

Hey mate, thanks so much for the love. glad you got something out of it! Honestly, it sounds like you'd need the 50x. An overnighter you might get away with the 30ltr strapping stuff to the outside, but even then it's pushing it. I'd go the 50x any day for overnight hikes. In regards to size, the 50ltr is fine. I have the 70x as well and it fits me fine. The waist belt is always the issue being so skinny, but you can always cut that down if need be. Shimoda has a video online showing how to do that. Carry-on is going to be an issue. I think if you are domestic in the states you will be ok, and really most places you should be ok, but on small planes, it might not fit unless you turn it to the side in the overhead locker. I doubt it would fit under a seat unless it was quite empty. I've not flown with the 50 but mates have and they were fine. Unfortunately, there is always a compromise. Hope that helps mate!

@@etchd_ thank you so much for your prompt and detailed answer. It was indeed my thoughts even though I like the size of the 30L I will go for the 50L as I like a neatly packed bag! I usually spend 1 to 2 nights up camping/trekking in the mountains so it’s easy to find yourself with quite a bit of gear and a bit of food too so your message comforts my initial thoughts. Thanks a lot again and keep posting! Cheers
