Shin Godzilla is a masterpiece, and this song only shows us further his struggle. He was a creature, dying, but mutating beyond his control. He didn’t mean to destroy anything, or to hurt anyone. In fact, that’s probably the last thing he wants to do. But he has to, because it’s the one thing keeping him alive, and he knows that no one will understand his struggle. His roars are not of victory, but of pain and depression. He’s crying for help, but no one will save him. He doesn’t kill for sport or for fun, he kills because that’s the only thing he can do.

Another thing to note: In traditional Opera, the soprano role was often given to the damsel in distress or female protagonist, whereas the bass role was given to the villain of the story. Yeah that’s a nice touch, the song starts with the female opera I guess signifying how shin is in distress and is confused of where they are, and later in the song the bass singer comes in in reference to how people and shin themselves portray them as the villain later in the movie, because shin knows the damage they are causing, they can’t control it because of the pain and agony it’s in, and the constant evolution is just making it worse, (that’s what I think don’t take my word on it)

Fun fact: the reason that Shin Godzilla's atomic breath is purple, unlike almost every other Godzilla, is because it symbolically represents his pain and desperation. Purple is the color of great suffering, part of the reason purple is worn by catholic priests during lent, the season of suffering and atonement. This meaning is also highlighted when you consider that Shin only develops his atomic breath after he has been wounded by the bombs and roars in agony.

Speaking of Legendary’s films, Ken Watanabe’s character was named Dr. Ishiro Serizawa as a tribute to Dr. Daisuke Serizawa and even has a scene in “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” that pays tribute to the original 1954 film, with a twist. As a result, I often liked to imagine G14 and GKOTM as unofficial sequels to G54 (kind of like how the Heisei and Millennium films still incorporate G54 into its official continuity), and Daisuke Serizawa as Ishiro Serizawa’s uncle to tie the films together. When G54, G14, and GKOTM are then watched back-to-back as a trilogy, one can then interpret G54 as the tragic film like Shin Godzilla, while G14 and GKOTM are more uplifting stories about mankind having another chance to reconcile with nature, by learning to cooperate with the second Godzilla in protecting the Earth rather than once more making enemies with tragic consequences for both.

This movie went back to the roots of Godzilla being an accident and something that was created by mankind's folly. This Godzilla is simply put, an abomination. Something that shouldn't even exist let alone walk among man. He is in constant, unbearable pain from *SIMPLY BEING ALIVE* and confused as to why he is even here or what his purpose is. Shin Godzilla is a complete and total accident gone horribly wrong, and is suffering for no reason other than simply existence being a cruel mistress. He never asked for this, he never wanted this yet it was forced upon him. Humanity transformed him into the ultimate being of terror and destruction from our own negligence and stupidity, and as a final act of retaliation Shin Godzilla punishes us to remind us what the true downfall of man is: arrogance.

We look at Shin Godzilla and are obviously horrified about how he looks and what he’s doing, but we don’t realize until later that he’s in so much pain and is suffering because of humanity. He’s simply an animal that was exposed to something that turned him into a monster. I bet he really has no ill will; he looks angry, tired but most importantly, scared. Look at his movements and his skin. You can’t tell me that he doesn’t look like he’s in pain. Shin Godzilla himself really is the tragedy, not the destruction he brings. Shin only really roars when in pain, it's a tad hard to notice but I think it's correct The first roar when second form, when he started to heat up, he roared and ran into the ocean, In the next, it's when the bunker buster bombs (which they dropped on his HEAD earlier in the movie and did Jack squat, as well as bunker buster bombs being designed to tunnel deep into something before blowing up) impact, when he's hit in the back and blood showers the streets, he roars in pain before laying waste to the city atomic fire style, but then, a tiny detail, when he funnels it into the purple laser, after he closes his mouth to shoot the beams from his back, in fact the moment he closes his mouth, he squeaks a small roar can be heard, along with the sound of hissing flames being extinguished, and some smoke Even his atomic breath causes him pain, and in his last roar, he is being "put down" so to speak by the coagulatent, it's the moment he actually begins to freeze, and this one, I feel is different, I feel its a thank you, his pain, his suffering, his torment, it can end Shin is ANYTHING but stupid, I think it knew it was being stopped by the coagulatent, but it wasn't allowing itself to be defeated, somewhat like "who will know", there are 2 voices, what I believe to be the body and mind The female voice seems to be the mind, mourning it's pain and yearning for death, while the deeper male voice is the body, the primal urge for self preservation at any cost, to survive no matter the pain, and once the mind realises it can finally rest, he roars as a thank you, Or maybe I'm digging WAY too deep then again this was made by the NEON GENISIS EVANGALION producer and that story is layers upon layers so I dunno

The lyrics are 100% from Goji's perspective. Let's analyze it carefully, start to finish: "if I die in this world, who will know something of me? I am lost, no one knows, there's no trace of my yearning" I've heard a lot of contention specifically pointed at this verse, because the notion that Godzilla's death going unnoticed is ridiculous, but if you look a little deeper, Shin isn't lamenting over being forgotten in death; he's lamenting that nobody will truly know who he was, a creature found lost in another world, afraid of what stands before him and his new, dire circumstance. He doesn't want to die a monster, he just wants to return to the world he knew before he came to be the beast we know him as. He's a fish that, very suddenly, found himself in a pond too small. Moving on, "but I must carry on, nothing worse can befall. All my fears, all my tears, tell my heart there's a hole." This part is really interesting, because it introduces the deeper bass filled secondary choir, as opposed to the light, high pitched feminine choir from before. Before digging into the lyrics, let me tell you why this is so important: many people have argued that the two separate voices may be different characters, maybe one is Shin but the other is humanity. I even saw a comment theorizing it's to bringl mystery to Goji's gender. Here's what it really means- Godzilla is facing a conflict of personality. The voices are two parts of a whole, a duality that tells the story of Godzilla's death as a simple animal and rebirth as a monster, his metamorphosis. The lighter voice represents the sadness and innocence in Godzilla's nature, speaking primarily of the fate that has befallen him and how it is an inescapable fate, whereas the deeper voice tells of the rise of Shin, speaking of how he must destroy and slaughter to survive, as well as how it will continue on at whatever cost, just to find some kind of hope that may or may not exist. As for the lyrics in this verse themselves, Godzilla is saying that he must carry on destroying because there's nothing left in him anyways, and there's nothing more painful that could happen to him than what already has, his tears and fears making it clear to him that there is a hole in his heart and his very soul. He is ruined, and there's nothing left but to follow his base instincts and just survive. "I wear a void, not even hope. A downward slope, is all I see." The remnants of Goji's soul tell of how it has been wrapped in dark, trapped inside nothing, and that he cannot even hope anymore. All that is left for him is to continue falling through the downward slope, the only path that Goji can even perceive at the this point. "As long as breath comes from my mouth, I may yet stand the slightest chance, a shaft of light is all I need to cease the darkness killing me." Shin has reached the breaking point, he is nearing his death and he knows it- but he is still alive. Somehow, by some miracle and in the most twisted way, Shin has found the hope that he had lost before, but at the cost of destroying everything around him. As long as breath, an allusion to his atomic breath power, continues to flow in him then he might be able to continue living, whatever that even means for him anymore. To escape the void around him, to stop the vicious assault being laid upon him, all he needs is that shaft of light, that one ray of hope both figuratively, and with the manifestation of his atomic breath, literally. Godzilla has been through the wringer- trapped in an alien world in a body he does not know, surrounded by death and destruction, all alone, and nobody will know who or what he once was; all he can do to prevent the entire world from trying to slaughter him is to fight back and annihilate everything in his path. Being placed inside a monster wasn't his fault, but choosing to become one to live was all he could do. It really is a tragedy, and it really is all about Shin Godzilla.

This is the tale of a creature gravely damaged by the mistakes of humanity. The unknown damages they are causing. This creature had no idea what to expect. At one point, he’s a normal aquatic creature living in the ocean, the next, he’s getting nuclear waste dumped on him by the creatures from above and mutates into a creature he never wanted to be. A monster. He had no choice. He does not know why this happened to him. It just... *happened* to him. Scared, he flees to dry land, not knowing what damage befalls him or the things on land. Once there, he is then bombarded with screams and loud noises he is unaware of with creatures he is unaware of all the while losing blood. This throws him into an even bigger panic, losing more blood, adding to the pain, and prompts him into destroying everything in his path in order to live. He then learns that he must adapt to his new environment and force himself to evolve. Braking his bones and replacing them with new ones, stretching and tearing apart his flesh for new parts to be filled in, and suffering all that pain just in order for him to live, he lets out his first roar. A roar of pain. He is then attacked by the ones he calls “alien” to him, and learning he is still not suitable for this environment, he flees in a panic to the place he feels most comfortable. Deep below. He soon mutates even more and gets bigger and bigger. He soon realizes he is to big for his home. Knowing his death is slowly drawing near, and what lurks above, he returns to the world above. He then re-encounters the sounds and creatures he hates most but fights through it. However, this time they retaliate. Bombarding him with explosives all because they are scared. Which only adds to his fear and confusion. And adds a new emotion. Sadness. Sadness that the creatures who ruined his life now want to kill him. Sadness that he does not know why this is happening to him. Sadness that the world may never know of his tragedy. He has become empty. His heart is now hollow and void. He sees nothing for him in the near future. Nothing else left for him. All he does know is that he must continue his path of destruction. Follow this downward slope of chaos. All in order to live. He must become what these creatures see him as. A monster. Even knowing his fate in the end. It is then that he is gravely damaged by these creatures dropping more explosives onto him. He then let’s out another roar. However it is not a reaction to pain. Though he is feeling immeasurable pain. It is a cry for help. A cry that his pain could end. That this attack would cease! That his life could be spared and that he could return to a normal life as an animal! Even though he knew it could never happen and he had no more hope left he still clung desperately to that wish! But his cry is ignored. All he knows now is that he must adapt in order to live. He then forces himself to forgo evolution once more. Braking his jaw, shredding his throat, and burning his insides, a raging fire falls out of his mouth. But these flames are not out of any pure hatred or rage. They are out of desperation. As the flames of Hell burn through his throat they turn to a shaft of light to allow him the slightest chance at living. This amount of pain and energy he puts out just to live quickly tires him out and he then goes into a rest where he either wishes he could Rest In Peace or soon be able to cease the darkness killing him. Forever cementing himself as the thing he hates the most. A monster.

Interviews with the monsters: Gojira (Japanese): "Have I worked with Shin? Well... no, not really. I've talked with him, but he never seemed to be comfortable around crowds. He always looked sad, but always came to parties. And you know Mosura, she doesn't like bad vibes so she tried to cheer him up one time. He just stared needles through her. He kind of freaks us out a bit, but I guess knowing what we know now it makes sense." Godzilla (American): "Everyone knows Shin, I do too. I was put on this earth to be a protector, a balance scale if you will. Gojira is a hero to the Japanese even if some of his past acts weren't all that heroic. Then there's Mosura, she helps Goji win fights cuz she's cool like that. Ghidorah, although he's evil on set is a great guy who doesn't want to destroy the world. Then there's Shin. I... can't really place Shin. I got to talking with him one night, all he ever did was nod or shake his head. Like all of us he's very method, so when I asked if those missiles in his back hurt a lot, all he said was, 'they weren't as bad as the rest of my life'. That kind of stuck with me. He hasn't told anybody what's bugging him but we know something's wrong now. Just... hey Shin, if you're hearing this, we're here for you man, you're a monster like us too." Ghidorah Ichi: "Guys? You ever talk to Shin?" Ni: "Only when you have." San (Kevin): "He's weird, I kind of like him though." Mosura: "He's odd... that's about all I can say about him. But I told everybody why he's like that. I think it gave us some new input on his life. The poor guy never asked for this. I'm surprised he took on the Godzilla role with such gusto. I think he had talks with the director, asked him to make the movie less of a monster movie, more of a view into his life. I think that was the right decision."

Scorpio Rekt Productions *feels bad for a big, radioactive lizard monster*
I’m gonna make an analysis on the lyrics. This is an opinion, feel free to correct me. We’re going onto the first part “If I die in this world Who will know, something of me I am lost, no one knows There’s no trace of my yearning” First the line, “If I die, who will know something of me”. He’s scared that if he dies, people will just carry on. He wants the people to know and learn from their mistakes. Their wrong-doings led to his upbringing and that Japan’s destruction is not his fault, but theirs. Next, “I am lost, no one knows, there’s no trace, of my yearning”. He clearly did not want to destroy and bring sadness over Japan. He’s constantly mutating against his will and he’s “lost”. The people of Japan think that he wants to kill them, when in fact he’s just pleading for help. No one can understand the pain that he feels. His roars are a plead of help, a sign that he’s in pain. To further prove it, look at his design. Other Godzilla’s look dominant, per say; like Legendary Godzilla. Legendary G’s design makes him look intimidating and menacing. But this Godzilla’s design is tragic, it looks painful and it makes something like a burn on your finger look like a scratch. He wants to be free of his suffering. Second part “But I must carry on Nothing worse can befall All my fears, all my tears Tell my heart, there’s a hole” This part is voiced by men, signifying that this is a different conscience from the last one. The line “But I must carry on, nothing worse can befall”. This part of the conscience is telling him to carry on and keep moving forward. It’s telling him nothing can be worse than the pain he feels. “All my fears, all my tears, tell my heart there’s a hole”. This side wants Godzilla to get rid of any fears or hesitations he has in order to push on. His side tells Godzilla that it should discard every thing feeling he has in order for survival. Third part “I wear a void not even hope a downward slope is all I see” This part is voiced by women, or to be figurative “angels”. This is the same conscience we see in part 1. “I wear a void, not even hope”. This says that Godzilla wear the void of his past self. That he isn’t the simple, small and peaceful creature he used to be. And even if he wants to go back to that past, there’s no chance for it. Not even hope can save him from the cruel fate he’s experiencing. To put it simply, he can’t even hope to be the creature he used to be. “A downward slope is all I see”. He knows that if he goes down the road he’s going down, he’ll end up scared, lost and dead. He knows no matter what, his doom will always await him. Last part “As long as breath comes from my mouth I may yet stand the slightest chance A shaft of light is all I need To cease the darkness killing me” This side is voiced by men, the conflicting side of Godzilla or the “devils” “As long a breath comes from my mouth, I may yet stand the slightest chance”. This is in a response to the downward slope that he sees. This side is trying to convince Godzilla that as long as his heart is beating or as long as he breathe, he will stand a chance. It wants to fight, fight till the end. “A shaft of light is all I need, to cease the darkness killing me”. The shaft of light references Godzilla’s atomic blast. This side says that the atomic blast is all Godzilla needs to kill the “darkness” which in this case are the humans. In order to survive, he needs to kill the people who try to kill him. If he doesn’t, who knows for sure what his fate will be. Conclusion: The two voices in the song are his moral sides. One side says that he should stop, it knows that he’s tragic and it says that it wants the suffering (both on he human and Godzilla sides) to stop. Though, the other side says that he should fight, to survive; that in order to live, he needs to kill those who oppose him. In between all of this, there’s Godzilla himself. He just wants to be free of this tragedy and he just wants to go back home. He doesn’t want to kill, he doesn’t want to fight, and he doesn’t want to stop moving. He just wants to be normal again. Verdict: It’s tragic, and compared to all the other Godzilla’s; this one is the darkest. Again, this is an opinion; feel free to correct me. Edit: I appreciate the likes but I would like to change something. A couple of people in the replies pointed out the idea of the mind contrasting the body and I actually prefer it over the duality of his conscience. His mind is pleading to stop, he doesn’t want to hurt anyone; he just wants to go back to before the radiation, before the suffering, before the birth of the tragic monster we know today. But his body would like to disagree. The body wants to survive, to fight. To use that shaft of light (atomic breath) to be the beacon of his hope. This is a way more beautiful perspective as opposed to my last one. I thank you guys for giving your perspectives too, it’s been fun reading the replies to this comment. Anyways, I’m gonna dip back to the nuclear wasteland I call my room to sleep.

Fun Fact: Godzilla is seen as a metaphor or personification of the destructive power of nuclear weapons, particularly in response to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The original 1954 Godzilla film was heavily influenced by the fear and trauma caused by those bombings and the dangers of nuclear testing. Godzilla's appearance and destructive abilities often symbolize the horrors of nuclear warfare and its impact on society and the environment. Knowing this, makes this song hit 8 times harder to the feels. 😢

I’ve always seen this part of the movie whenever the bombs hit his spine.. he’s bleeding .. means he can die. I believe this song is a conversation between two things inside of him . One side wanting to accept death because this world is too much for the humans and it’s better for Godzilla to perish. The other half is saying “we literally have the fire power. What can they do” I feel like at the very end when the two voices from the song come together it’s like Godzilla made it’s choice..

So, originally Godzilla wanted to die, but because he was so disgusted at the humans only giving suffering to him that he made the decision to live so that he can unleash the hell upon every human? Wow, I accidentally copied another character again, this is what I get for copying LN 2
@SamuelTrademarked Жыл бұрын
@@auhsojacosta1672 nope, godzilla unleashed hell in self-defense. he was pretty much just mindlessly wandering around and causing destruction in his wake unintentionally, but when humans started attacking him, he reacted in self defense. the other side is his instincts telling him to carry on, nothing more

With that logic it makes sense the tail end seemed to be trying to escape from their shared body

This movie was the perfect portrayal of Godzilla and the personification of the effects of the nuclear bomb testings and atomic bomb droppings. Even the director ishiro Honda wanted to create that message by doing a movie based on monster with a radioactive core and constantly suffering. Ishiro Honda may you rest in peace and be proud of your masterpiece

having become a nuclear electrician, i have gained a greater respect for shin . the strange level of accuaracy to his representation of fukishima and the disasters that led up to it melt down of three reactors along with how their government failed to respond, its an amazing representation.

I remember when I first saw Shin Godzilla, I thought it was some kind of horror movie. But now, I feel like Shin Godzilla is more of a sad story. The true horror in the movie isn't Godzilla. It's mankind. Mankind hurt him, so he hurt mankind. Even though Shin Godzilla isn't a real creature, I still feel so bad for him. Imagine you're just going on about your day and your life falls apart and you're in constant agony. He didn't want to live. He didn't want to do any harm. But his body kept trying to adapt and he was forced to become the monster. This movie is truly a masterpiece. But seriously, I just can't describe how sad I am for him even though he's fictional. The people in the movie think he's the monster, and yeah, maybe he is the monster. But they don't know that the reason he is a monster is because of them. This movie really goes to show how terrible we humans are. I hope Shin Godzilla dies and gets to be in a better place. The world was too cruel for the poor thing.

@@galacticgryphon648 his internal reactor was basically shut off by the coolant they forced down his throat. Some form of energy stimulation could jumpstart his reactor and cause him to reawaken. So now they have a humongous statue of a monster, standing in middle of the city, that could wake up at any time. And judging by the things that seemingly started coming out of its tail before it froze, it’ll be hell on earth if it does reawaken.
