Actually, only Walter slowly falls into radicalization, you can see confliction with Jonathan all the way until he turns into Merkabah. My favorite moment of the game is when you are finding out the secret of the reds. I called the whole “the pills are really people” from the beginning, but just the way you have to go through an upside down building to find out the twisted truth is amazing. Using the two kid quotes to let you connect the dots is terrifying. The game doesn’t outright have the other characters spell it out either, which I think makes it that much more impactful.

This is a pretty solid video! However, I think you were off about a lot of things towards the last 3rd of the video. Blasted and Infernal Tokyo are worlds forged from alternative decisions made by the Counter-Demon Force member who would reincarnate as Flynn. These aren't worlds created by the different endings of SMT 4. The Tokyo of the main game is created by the man who decided to prioritize protecting the people and sacrificed himself as a vessel for Masakado to create a protective dome, so that Tokyo wouldn't be destroyed during God's plan (Neutral world). This is (at least partially) why Flynn could unsheathe the katana that summons Masakato in the Neutral route and why Tokyo was covered by a dome in the first place. Blasted Tokyo is created by pre-Flynn being unable or unwilling to interfere in God's plan to annihilate and recreate the Earth (Law world). Infernal Tokyo is pre-Flynn teaming with Kenji (another former Counter-Demon Force member) and dying fighting off God's minions while protecting Kenji (Chaos world). More evidence is shown by the existence of Akira in Blasted and Infernal Tokyo, while he is the deceased King Aquila in main Tokyo (later reincarnated as Nanashi). Akira is responsible for the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. This is something that was strongly implied with Akira's dialogue in Blasted Tokyo (Johnathan makes a remark that he'll be King Akira of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado), and explicitly shown through Nanashi's flashbacks of being Akira in SMT 4 Apocalypse. The reason Akira reincarnated as Nanahsi is because he died after Mikado was created on the surface above Tokyo (because the flow of time is much faster above Tokyo, which is why Nanashi is a 15 year old by the time SMT 4 happens). The White was trying to show Flynn that no matter whether he preserved or destroyed order, he would end up creating a world *like* the ones he traveled through. It wouldn't make sense for Mikado in the Law Ending to become Blasted Tokyo. It also wouldn't make sense for Akira to reincarnate as Akira again. The reason The White doesn't show a Neutral world is because Flynn lives in that Neutral world. The White Ending is (subjectively) the worst one, since Megami Tensei is set across a multiverse. There are billions of worlds that suffer through greater or lesser conflicts (Persona, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Survivor, etc). You ultimately accomplish nothing by deciding to end a single universe, other than admit that humans are too weak to keep pushing through adversity. The White's Plan is doomed from the start, they don't even accomplish what they set out to do, they just purge one of billions of universes. Plus what they are proposing is for there to be absolutely nothing. Isn't it part of being human to live through the good and bad that life brings? The White ending really isn't any better than Persona 3's bad ending. The Neutral Ending is framed narratively as being the best ending (like it is in most SMT games, which politically I have problems with since it leans to glorifying the status quo, rather than presenting anything to fix to systemic issues). It's the only ending that stays true to what Flynn's prior incarnation believed in. It's implied that it's the path that Stephen and Burroughs wanted Flynn to follow, as he is able to (mostly) restore Tokyo, fully revive the Goddess of Tokyo (which Burroughs is designed to resemble), and reignite the hopes of humanity for a better future. I commend anyone who took the time to read all of what I typed. Edit: Anyone that doubts my claims after seeing that Simply Dad disagrees with me, should look at the comments below, where I explore lore from SMT III: Nocturne, SMT IV DLC, SMT IV:A (and it's DLC), and SMT If... to back my claims that the multiverse is a part of Megami Tensei canon. I also mainly try to also interpret the story as a standalone game aswell. I think this is interesting, so let's have a discussion. :) Edit 2: as abesolutzero has said, it's pretty darn obvious that Walter is Kenji reincarnated and Johnathan is Kiyoharu's reincarnated form.

@Reoko77
@Reoko77 4 жыл бұрын
@@SimplyDad Actually daddy-o, he is correct. In the Diamond realms DLC of apocalypse, it is confirmed that the nexus, the place it takes place in is the gateways to multiple universes. You meet the protagonists of the other series, bring them in from their deaths and recorrect the course of their respective timelines. The Great Will, the ultimate creator of the devil, god, etc is implied to be the player himself, YOU. You are the great will, guiding the protagonist in whatever will you choose, thus creating a universe. Everytime you start up a playthrough, you are essentially creating a universe. And yes, it is implied the side series falls into this category as well. Its some mind blowing, 4th wall meta shit that was KINDA confirmed by the developers in order to connect the series together. At first, they didnt plan on connecting anything together but fans kept asking. Its like trying to tie together the entire Final fantasy series. But in all considerations, dude is right. Apocalypse may not be for everyone but it give out better lore and background awnsers.
@SimplyDad
@SimplyDad 4 жыл бұрын
No, it’s not LMAO, in SMT IV, not apocalypse, the world is really self contained, the two future Tokyo’s are explained pretty well in the DLC and the NPC dialogue explains all of this, especially things like why there’s cocoons in Tokyo and what they are specifically.
@Reoko77
@Reoko77 4 жыл бұрын
@@SimplyDad Well, in 4, it is self contained in a way but WAS. It was changed when apocalypse released. The multiverse rules in the series change from game to game dating all the way back to the second game but apocalypse gives more detail. In the 4, all three universes of Tokyo visited by Flynn are on the same time spot, as the same cataclysm took place 25 years ago is often referred to by residences of all three universes, but not into great detail. It wasn't untill apocalypse came put and but more detail in, thus changing the rules once more. Apocalypse starts near the end of the neutral route of 4, but remember, thats ONE universe. Theres another one in which it did NOT. theres another where nanashi sides with law, another which he sides with chaos, another which he sides with Flynn, etc. Every choice the Great Will makes, (You) it creates another branching timelines, thus, another universe. The reason rules had changed and more details where made was because of YHVH. Steven tells us that YHVH was once the main avatar, but it grew arrogant enough to declare itself independent from the Great Will and sought to bring the multiverse under its control. Think of YHVH being a program you create to help with your computer but decides that he can do your job better, takes over your whole computer and decides to run it himself. But I digress. Im getting off track. My main point is basically some of the series has their own universe that branches off into OTHER worlds due to player choice but they are linked and one game world can intervene with others. (Like SMT 2 Aleph appearing in SMT 3). But in all reality, it is actually up to us to interpret this. One of the creators of the series stated its up to player interpretation and choice how it it all goes. For one person, it can all be connected. To another, its all self contained. Hell there are those who say the Strange journey series is the main one but their not wrong, nor are they right. Its up to us to determine that. So daddo, you are technically right. After all, all of us are "The Great Will" of the series so ultimately, its up to us.
@puzzle_boy
@puzzle_boy 4 жыл бұрын
One of the things I love from not only this game but from the whole series itself it's how much players could discuss about what it's actually happening... Personally. I think the two other worlds we visit in SMT4 are alternate timelines that are real. Not the direct future for the mainstory. That's why Akira is still alive in them. But I'm not sure about The White Ones. I think they are well aware about the multiverses so you can interpret their ending as the actual end of ALL the universes (although that would be so much power for that Yamato PR machine. A power to delete even gods doesn't seem too believable) While not MY favorite ending I agree it's one of the best in the entire series showing us a very nihilistic version of things. Not a bad or good one. That's up to us, the players. Like always. You can side law, or you can side chaos, or any of them. No option is incorrect nor completely correct. It's exactly the same this time. And that's what SMT is truly trying to teach us. The implications of one side or another while learning about ourselves. Not a definitive morale answer.

I had to open a map on my computer and try to draw out my route just to progress the story at certain points and gave up on navigating side-quests because I couldn't find them either. And ruined Tokyo overworld has nothing compelling about it to me. It is just a grey blob I walk around in trying to find the actual content.

While I like the quality-of-life improvements that “SMT IV: Apocalypse” made, I think that, besides “Nocturne” (which was my first SMT game I played back when it came out in 2004), I have played through “SMT IV” multiple times. And I’m someone who RARELY replays JRPG’s even though I love them. The length is usually what makes me not want to replay them. I enjoy turn-based battles, and don’t find them boring. (Both Chess & Poker are turn-based if you think about it). However, I like what Atlus and other developers have done with turn-based gameplay like the press turn system and others. (And even bring an experience SMT player, the Minotaur stomped my ass the first time I fought him. But honestly, David gave me more trouble early game, lol).

So like, here's the thing if I'm allowed to share my experience (and sorry in advanced, this is going to get a bit lengthy) but the Yamato Perpetual Reactor was the very first ending I got for SMTIV. It was accidental--I was playing in the bathroom and maybe I didn't really understand the implications of what I was doing at the time, but by the time I caught myself, I was in the battle with the Reactor and Burroughs was speaking with that consternated voice of hers and well, the only way through was forward. For a really long time after I got that ending, I didn't play SMTIV again. Something didn't feel right and I couldn't really get it in me to replay the game if that was the ending but I'd played tons of SMT games before so eventually I dusted myself off and started anew. It was meticulous work getting through the other endings. I went Chaos first then Law and I bounced in between those trying to figure out how to get Neutral never managing to do it since I vowed that I wouldn't look anything up because I have purist tendencies like that and the more I bounced between endings, the more I had to fight and kill my friends, the more I had to see how these empty ideals that all hinged on some sort of desperation and response to hopelessness, the more hopeless I got in turn. One of the things that always fucked me up was Reverse Roppongi and finding out the true ingredients of the reds. It was truly the price of freedom--of the limited order of Tokyo and it broke me going through those labs every time. The last ending I have registered on my SMTIV game is the Yamato Perpetual Reactor ending. The Neutral ending's still eluded me and the last time I played, I guess I got so frustrated with it all that choosing nothing was better than choosing destruction. SMTIV's a good fucking game y'all and thank you so so so much for giving words to the sort of experience it's fans have been having for almost a decade.

The fact that when you die, you can make a deal with the ferryman of the River of Styx because he doesn’t wanna accept anymore souls because of overpopulation is just perfection. The Dialog in this game is absolutely superb. I can’t wait to fully dive into this game. Game is definitely unapologetic hard, but I’m not complaining.

This video/review is a masterpiece... Not. Really. It's perfectly edited. You put tears in my eyes. Shin Megami Tensei IV changed my (gaming) life. Its setting, plot and the issues it deals with makes you think more about the real world, humankind, existence and most importantly, yourself (my first ending was the nihilist one and that was really tough...) But that's not all! It's not only a very introspective and philosophical experience... Its gameplay mechanics, battle system, fusion, recruitment, etc and pace are so freakin' addictive and entertaining. It's not a perfect game, I know, but it does exactly what every videogame should do. And because all of that and much more it's still my favorite game in life. And introduced me into my nowadays favorite game series with no doubt. Btw Minotaur was nothing compare to Beelzebub. That damned god! Stupid sickness... Even that's symbolic, you can be a superman in combats but sickness could kill you anyway ;-;

SMT 4 was my first introduction to the Megami Tensei franchise and I fell in love with it. I bought it to olay on a road trip and played it the whole way. I felt so immersed in the game and loved the dark tones of the world SMT 4 built. The demon fusion system was constantly rewarding and the demons themselves had great design and personality. The music simply put, perfect. The combat, the most engaging in an rpg for me. It was challenging, but never felt unfair to me. The demon fusion system allows for customization and strategy. The battles don't overstay their welcome. Never felt the need to do serious grinding, just "get gud". Lastly, I like the way they did "random encounters", by allowing you to see the silhouettes of the demons so you can go around them if you want too. Most battles it was my choice to get into them. I also love Devil Survivor Overclocked and Strange Journey Redux bith I played after 4. I'm so glad I found SMT 4, it is a great introduction to the franchise.

While I got into the series with Devil Survivor 1, then Persona 3 FES, SMT IV was my first real SMT game. It did take me quite awhile to beat it, but I do love it and think it's great. I loved the atmosphere of being down in Tokyo and how it's a sharp contrast to what you're brought up with in the Kingdom of Mikado at first. Also, the characters were great. I don't think every character in media needs to have some tragic 5 hour backstory to make them "believable" in any sense. SMT IV characters were all great in their own way. They felt natural with their interactions to one another and to the world around them. Walter and Isabeau ended up being my favorites. I know that the 3 mains you're partnered with represent specific paths with their own ideologies, but I think the writing was strong enough for them to make them genuinely good characters on their own that makes you wonder which side you should choose. Despite getting Neutral ending on first playthrough with Isabeau, I felt myself sliding with Walter a lot at times. Saw that P5 logo at the end. Not sure if I'm ready for Dad's P5 Is Lacking video since P5 is my favorite in the entire MegaTen franchise, but I'm sure you'll bring up strong points as usual to back up your thoughts. lmao

I had never played a SMT game before 4. I was 16 when the game came out, and never played anything outside of a GBA game, or a DS game. So much was new to me, and the unfolding story was incredible. But what really pulled me in was how there was no other game like it at the time. The 3D environment, the fast-paced rpg mechanics, the story that never seemed to end but you couldn't tire of. There was so much implied without ever being explained. The abandoned locations with records on fighting the demons, the equipment better than mine implying there was an entire group of people better than me who still lost, people with the technology to teleport all over tokyo, the very people who made your gauntlet. The fact you can return to Mikado after going to Tokyo was so great too, and how out of place you know you are now, now that you know the truth. Searching for the Black Samurai changes from trying to hunt down a villain, to hunting down the truth. But I could never complete the game. It was too much for me, and stopped playing for too long. It was an odyssey, and no matter how much I enjoyed it, I couldn't find the stamina in me to complete it. I want to thank you for making this video, because I don't think I could bring myself to playing this game again. But thanks to you, I at least understand what I would have been met with.

I got into SMTIV from Persona 5 (which I got into due Joker being in Smash) and boy I wasn't ready for it. I personally love games with bleak worlds, not much on the apocalyptic kind of deal but in humanity's existence being questioned. It's hard to explain, but SMT IV puts it extremely well. I've always heard how the SMT games are hard as heck but the Naraku tutorial really kicked my rear, I remember getting the game on citra and spend hours trying to figure it out, then getting the game for real on 3DS just to play it handheld. The twist and turns of the story left me mentally drained. I got the Nihilist ending first, since nothing felt like a proper option for me (demons were cruel, angels felt like a blasphemous portrayal of the real ones, what else?) after that it was law, then chaos and finally neutral. The neutral one felt poorly written in my opinion, a safe option for the sake of having one. After 158 hours, I was done with the game. A part of me wishes to always be playing this game on an endless cycle, but a bigger part just wanted to be done with it (I was already burnt out lol). Amazing title, among my top favorite games of all time, which came as a surprise. Kinda wished I bought all the dlc for it before close of the 3DS shop. Hopefully it gets a proper port or something.

It makes them understand the press turn, and give them a taste of the difficulty they could found in other mainline titles. 4:47 that's why i prefer 3d grid turn-based systems, because there is a whole another layer of depth in the gameplay by having stuff like aoes, range, action points, movement points, etc, 2 games that execute that really well are age of wonders planetfall, and underrail, AoW withs a hex based grid and x-com stuff like cover, overwatch, but imo it's better because of limit range of overwatch, another cool thing about it is the stagger mechanic, it makes a unit loose one ap of 3 available, unless it's stagger resistant, the it needs a stagger of a highier tier to loose ap, it helps stop overwatch spam since it disables overwatch, all melee weapons have at least the minimun level of sttager to compensate for their range, as well as a melee overwatch that activates automaticaly once you end your turn, making it advantageous to position your melee units properly, and talking about underrail now, it's combat system is kinda the usual but what's good about it is before that, the preparation, can't deal with assault rifle users? craft a tactical vest, energy damage or grenades destroying you? craft a energy shield, it's incredibly satisfying, the crafting system is also preety good even though it's simple on the surface, the amount of options you have is incredibly big, now talking about the combat itself, it's based on the older fallout games, but so much better, your agility stat increases movement points and all characters have a fixated amount of ap unless they use drugs like adrenaline wich has it's downsides, so not all characters need high agility to actualy work, you also have a extremely big amount of options for weapons, and they are all good and distinct, so long as you build your character right wich unfortunaly isn't easy to do as a begginer so you wanna get a build from the forums of the wiki. btw, i forgot to mention: AoW planetfall is a 4x strategy game and underrail is a crpg, search those up on youtube and welcome to 2 beautiful worlds not many people know about. they also have great music, specialy underrail, you'd be doing yourself a diservice to not listen at least to these 4: grey army, arena, savages theme and tchort theme. 21:57 atmosphere? yep, you'll definetly love the underrail soundtrack... *faceless theme*

I don't want to get into any fights here, but I think you're wrong in a certain aspect: The worlds The White show are not the future worlds depending on your choice between Law and Chaos, but rather what sort of state one single Tokyo ended up with by making alignment decisions outside of the player's reach. It's been a bunch of years since I played, and I really appreciate your video because you brought back these memories, but I do remember my main points to defend. These being: while the Chaos world could be a perfect depiction of a future led by the alignment, we have Akira , just as in the Law world-in the game's main world, we hear of a late king with a similar name. We have three Akiras, and each is in a sort of leading position, or is about to. Now, the most decisive flaw in the claim that the other worlds are depictions of possible futures is that in the Law world, Tokyo still exists. In the Law ending, Flynn and Merkabah use the reactor to execute Great Abaddon, the same black hole as in The White ending, except it doesn't affect Mikado. Knowing that in Blasted Tokyo we have visible signs of ICBM bombings (as the Masakado DLC shows, also reminds me of SMT I, heh), this clearly is a sign that it is rather an alternative past where Masakado for some reason did not protect Tokyo. In retrospective, it reminds me of SMT I, because the ICBM is handled in different ways, I imagine it's sort of a callback of the alignments' choices (Thorman/Law would be to simply take the nuke, as seen in Blasted Tokyo, or Gotou using demons to somehow protect Tokyo, though neither this nor the game seems to explain Infernal Tokyo's state...) Hey, I know I'm a month late, but thank you for reading.

SMT ruined normal turn based RPGS for me. Because I firmly believe the press turn system is the best version of turn based combat

For real, it’s very hard of a rpg to be fun to me now lol, SMT already peaks the genre

I honestly feel really bad for Burroughs in the white ending, since not only is she strapped to the arm of the person about to eradicate all of reality, but also she chose Flynn because she felt he could change the world.

I first noticed it because it was _A 3DS game rated M and it’s $50?_ it went on sale for $25 on the 3DS store and I played my first SMT game ever. I hope this video gets way way more views because it’s definitely an easily missed gem. I didn’t expect to put in 100 hours but I had to do every last mission and battle possible. Even bought the DLC. The music is simply incredible and based on the SMTV reveal trailers tone today we’re in for another *masterpiece* 😭 Great video you told a wonderful story and gave anyone new a reason to check it out. I subscribed 🥰

SMT 4 was my first MegaTen game. I didn't even enter from the ground floor with Persona, like others. I would definitely put 4 up as my true favorite SMT among the series as a whole, spin offs and mainlines included. I may like some others more, namely Strange Journey or Persona 2 Innocent Sin (Which I generally consider the best story and characters in Megaten, let alone Persona). You perfectly managed to describe my feelings for this game. Thank you.

I believe that this game isn’t talked about enough, and especially here on KZbin. I’ve played this game more than once, and I’ve always been left wanting more, so I went many times on the internet trying to get more out of it, mainly by watching videos about it. But there are barely any. So to see this in-depth review of it that lasted almost an hour was amazing. It wasn’t perfect, as someone already mentioned in the comments, you didn’t really mention the neutral ending, but that is I think the only flaw your video has. Because aside from that, it truly captured why I love this game so much, and it managed to put into words something I never was able to explain myself, which is that unique feeling I have when I play Shin Megami Tensei IV; a feeling I never experienced playing any other game before nor since. So I want to say thank you for doing this game justice, and good job on the work you made to make this happen. I don’t know if this is the kind of videos you want to keep doing, because as I’m writing this, I’m noticing you barely have any videos out, but in hope that your future content will be on par with this, you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber. So good luck on your future projects, and have a wonderful day/night!
