Actually the dance practice for this song made the whole “dance practice video” thing super popular

Lucifer, the MV and magical incantation that brought me into SHINee World. Also, notice those wispy things surrounding our boys? The Japanese MV shows a slightly different story about what they are. Minho also finally gets a proper hairstyle and Taemin ditches the long hair for a little cone hat. You may also want to see SHINee perform the choreo UNDERWATER! (I kid you not!)

That underwater performance is amazing!!

THE BEST SONG EVER

In the "Lucifer" MV the SHINee members don't have superpowers, but the "smoke" or "light trail" you see is supposed to represent the aura of a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lines in the song say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (They are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) So, in other words, the woman or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles. In the MV you see them trying to fight against her powers and resist her attempts to try to make them bend to her will, etc. That's why in the choreography you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot -- for example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them. And they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc. (FYI: That vibration you saw them do is 100% them actually shaking like that, there aren't any camera tricks. If you pay attention when they perform Lucifer live, you will see them do that exact same thing. :D) LOL we have no idea why they had to be dancing in front of a sports car, but that was kind of an iconic thing that Kpop companies did back then in a lot of their MVs, The group would dance around a fancy car to showoff their coolness and to give the video a more futuristic, expensive looking aesthetic. "Lucifer" came out in 2010, more than 10 years ago, so this was just the look that a lot of MVs had back then. Just take a look at TVXQ, Super Junior, Infinite or 2PM MV, etc. from around that time and you will see a similar look and style. SHINee was setting trends in the industry with 'Lucifer." LOL I'm not sure why people are often so thrown by their hairstyles and outfits in this MV. :D I think they are actually all pretty cool for doing something different that sets them apart from everyone else in the industry. And that is what makes SHINee legends and why "Lucifer" is such an iconic song and dance. You're not going to remember a group or a song if they look and sound the same as everyone else, you remember them for standing out and not being afraid to be unique. SHINee are known for setting trends and never being afraid to experiment with their sound or look, so Key's head was 100% really shaved bald on the one side. What you see is his head has been shaved all the way down to his scalp. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. That's why Key's style is often just straddling the edge of outrageous, but somehow always manages to look cool. This was also the era where Taemin had long hair and it made him one of the most popular of the members at the time, especially with their Japanese fans. The Japanese culture really embraces men with long hair and the members said that he was one of the most popular at the time because of his style. Taemin with long hair is so iconic and many in the fandom were really sad when he eventually cut his hair. When Taemin debuted as a member of SHINee in 2008 he was only 14 years old, so in "Lucifer" he is about 16. If you want to see where SHINee truly shines you have to check out their iconic performance of "Lucifer" Live in concert. Check out their performance at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul, kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ6Yn2uHZ72CaZY. Or their performance of "Ring Ding Dong" and "Lucifer" at their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5), kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZ3Rl32Yetymr9k. This is a perfect example of how you can tell they are singing live and killing it every time. SHINee doesn't need auto tune, and if you hear them perform the song live, they often don't use it. "Lucifer" is actually known as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise which are designed to hit every beat of the song. And the song itself is very complicated with the songs wide range of notes and flow. Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoeTY5aHrL5_g7M. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team." It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our more difficult choreography and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D You should check out the dance practice next. SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice was the very first dance practice video ever released specifically for fans. SHINee is the group that started the trend and they are why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D It was the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then dance practice videos were filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience. But SM realized that fans were starting to try and copy SHINee's choreography and they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to follow suit and show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too.

SHINee and Lucifer = total awesomeness! Thank you, Tors1e. I always love watching SHINee perform this classic ( and all of their sings, really). If you haven't done it already, I was thinking that DxDxD (Dance, Dance, Dance) would be a perfect way to welcome the summer. There is a music video as well as live performances, including at Tokyo Dome. Other Shawols nay have some suggestions too. See you over on Patreon.

I love Lucifer. Most reactors absolutely lose their minds for the fashion but the best ones are the ones who get over it/realize it was actually very on trend/realize their styles actually kinds suit them/realize SHINee can do anything/just love SHINee. Maybe it's because I'm also very much a noona fan but 2nd gen crazy fashions and sports car concepts and mouth rubbing licks and stuff just feel very endearing and funny. Plus Taemin is a freaking high fashion model in this one.

Re Minho's hair, I always feel like it was punishment for begging to cut his long hair during RDD promotions. I can't explain the others...maybe they all misbehaved and needed punishment. What's life without a few bad haircuts.

Im curious. When you say A-Yo is your favourite song, do you mean your favourite song, favourite K-pop song, or favourite SHINee song? Have you seen them singing it live in concert? The performance I saw was so charming and uplifting, and it was heart-warming to see the obvious love they have for each other.

As for many this was my first SHINee (and K-Pop) MV and as soon as I (15 y.o. me) saw the long hair I was like "Yeah...whoever this is I gonna stan him" 😂 that's the story about how I became a Taemint and I haven't regretted it once in the past ten years. I also realized that the interesting "teen idols" were hiding in Korea. Zac Efron, Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers, etc. just weren't it for me. (Unpopular opinion: I liked Key's side shaved hairstyle ✌)

AHHH! lucifer will always have a very special place in my heart because it's the song and mv that officially got me into both shinee and kpop on the whole. weird or not, taemin's long hair was definitely an important factor in my descent into shawol-ism hahaha one big mv trope seen here is the infamous "SM box" - roughly from the start of 2nd gen until the start of 3rd gen, SM was known for filming so many of their artist's music videos on sets that looked like doorless, windowless boxes to the point that any mv that DIDN'T take place in one such box was always treated like a special occasion LOL shinee got the special treatment here, in that they got to hang out in front of luxury cars inside their box 😂
