On day 2 training with Comando Cobra, the special forces of the Honduran National Police, I attempt their fitness tests. Can a civilian KZbinr pass the minimum requirements to be a Comando Cobra? At 6 AM, I begin with a 12km run up the Lepaterique mountains.
I start the run in good spirits, since I had trained for two months before the challenge. I run alongside my teammates for half an hour and think-yes, I can do this. I'm enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery of Lepaterique as we arrive at the bottom fo the mountain to receive my Cobra helmet.
From here on out, the day turns into my worst nightmare. To start, the boots they gave me are 4 sizes too big, and my pants keep falling down since I don't have a belt. I don't know how to put my helmet on so it bounces up and down, hitting my skull and covering my eyes. I start to climb the mountain in such conditions, falling several times, scraping my hands and knees.
From so many falls and blows, my right knee begins to hurt. Last year, I tore my medial ligament during a soccer game, and I spent six months in therapy. After another half hour, all my teammates pass me, leaving me in last place as my spirits begin to sink.
The tests continue, with push-ups, sit-ups, sharks, burpees, and pullups. Afterwards, the team prepares to do tear gas training, an activity that left me traumatized the night before. This time it would last longer and we would be completely locked in the dormitory. The instructor gives me the option of participating with my classmates or cowardly abstaining.
At night, instructor Sanchez gives me two options: plunge into the lagoon in the extreme cold or endure tear gas. What I fear most is the cold, so I choose gas-but only with one condition: We would do it outside since I still don't feel ready to withstand it inside a building. Upon entering the bedroom, instructor Sanchez surprises me with the challenge of a lifetime.
