It's sad. It causes 2 impressions upon the first time the person sees it. Firstable, I believe, after the incident with her parents, Mikasa had become stronger and had managed her feelings much better than before. When Armin told her Eren was "dead" she had managed it fresh by killing titans to fullfill her wishes of sadness, but upon this, it meant Eren had saved her from that other fatty that was about to eat her. Even worse, that titan, was the one which Eren hurted and kicked the most. So the meaning of the scarf flew away. Allthough the scenery was ideal and the music couldn't be more perfect, you can see that Mikasa and Eren never hug back in any other chapter as I have seen. To see Mikasa desesperately hugging Eren would be coute for the spectator. But! If the creator decided that when Mikasa hugged Eren, he raised his arms and hugged her back in that moment while whispering at her something cute like what he told Armin before getting swalowed would be even sadder. After that, he would go back on laying silently and allowing Mikasa to keep crying. That would be perfect. And, through the animes I have seen, is the first time that the victim isn't dead, the music keeps on going sad and the scenery doesn't turn sunny before the characters leave that zone. I mean, the smoke does not vanishes when Mikasa discovers Eren's ok. And what does the worried character do first after holding Eren? checking if he was alive by checking his pulse. The cute thing is that Mikasa does it with her head, and not with her hand, like other people do. Also, Mikasa does not smile after it. She keeps on crying, it means she was really worried and focused on if Eren could open his eyes after it.
