It'a actually pretty cool the makers of the GBA version thought to lighten up the colors so you could see what's going on even on the terrible OG GBA. Allot of people forget that that was an issue and also the reason allot of GBA games that dont have gamma adjustment or different screen modes (GBA/SP /Gameboy Player), often appear to have washed out colors. If this game had such a heave contrast like the Genesis version it would be unplayable on that shitty GBA screen

most games were unplayable on the original gba screen to me. i have no idea how the original gba was so successful honestly, the sp was amazing but the original was garbage. i bought one with castlevania aria of sorrow, metroid fusion, and the 2 zelda games on gameboy color and they were all completely unplayable for me. i tried those stupid lamps, i tried playing in every possible lighting condition and i just couldn't do it. it should have been a complete failure and forced nintendo to put the sp out much sooner.

@@Jack_80 GBA plays well outdoors if your screen is clean and has no scratches on it. I still prefer it for that. You could buy replacement lenses for an eternity and can now buy glass ones which don't scratch so easily. Original is PMMA (acrylic). You should be using a protective carrying case either way. The SP has the same colour reproduction (except the backlit TFT model at the end of life produced in small numbers) as the wide GBA. It does have a front light unit though to make up for lack of even external lighting, but that can cause its own problems in sunlight with streaks. In turn backlit model is just not really playable outdoors.

@@SianaGearz now i got a gba, ds, and psp emulators on my phone with hundreds of games. i have one of those mounts that attaches my phone to a ps4 controller, combining the 2 into the perfect portable gaming console. i even played through xenosaga episode 1 for ps2 that way, and was amazed it ran perfectly on my 5 year old sony phone. sadly it couldn't quite handle episodes 2 and 3, need to spend $1200 on the new sony for that.

I wish they would remake both shining force 1 and 2 with modern graphics on consoles and PC. Not that the old graphics hinder the experience,I just started playing shining force 2 for the first time and I'm loving it,even when I usually don't like retro games,just shows how well shining force 1 and 2 held up,but it would be really cool to see these games with modern models etc since I do kinda hate it how all combat sprites are just color swaps,like all mages have exact same model with different color etc.

The story of the gba version is much better imo, I liked it much more, especially the side of runefaust and narsha (i think that was her name) and seeing how darksol was planning the whole thing, and the fact that max has much more dialogue makes it more interesting and when he becomes mute has a lot more impact. And of course ZOUKA, I cannot even begin to describe how much I love zouka

Graphics: GBA. I love the facelift. Music: Genesis. The GBA version is a bit on the tinny side. One thing I can say very good about the GBA version: The translation was fixed and refined unlike the Genesis version which has some bad Engrish, which was common in that era, but who really cares.

Judging by visuals alone I prefer the GBA version, with the updated sprites and battle animations. Also the story is clearly supierior. However I'm not a huge fan of the screen crunch. Also Genesis easily wins out on the music. However both clearly have their merits. Though thing that's always consistent.... Ken missing shit.

I agree with you, I like the GBA graphics alot more and all the redone artwork and sprites they did for it but my only gripe is how the areas appear so much smaller like they removed large parts of the battle field to squeeze everything onto one screen without any scrolling needed

Both are equally fantastic games. I think the music was better in the original, but the remake has the additional gameplay elements and the new game+. As for translation, the remake is more faithful, but I think the original was more hard hitting, since I liked that Max would only say a single line of dialogue in the whole game at the very end, while in the remake hes pretty chatty. But I appreciate that the remake is more faithful. I have a slight preference for the originals graphics, but both are excellent.

Vectorman and Sonic 3D Blast look great as far as digitized graphics go. And beside the Mega Drive kept releasing great-looking "classic" graphics such as Ristar or Alien Soldier so it has and will never be in "problematic" situation. Oh and what about recent Mega Drive homebrews such as Pier Solar or Paprium? Or Mega Drive demos such as Overdrive 1 and 2? :) Also funny how SNES fanboys like to talk about colors and don't even realize that the SNES can't even output a proper 4:3 shaped resolution meaning SNES games are always stretched once on TV xD

I grew up with the MD version, but after finding a copy of the GBA version I found it to be a better and more polished experience. One big improvement was the translation from Japanese; the MD original was poorly done and ended up having plotholes as a result. .....however the music in the original>>>>>>remake. No contest.

This is a tough one. The original looks fine, the GBA looks like what would have been the SNES port back in the day. The GBA has that screen crunch though...but it also doesn't have that annoying sfx that Genesis has for speech. I guess it comes down to how they play. I haven't played SF on either, so I can't say.

GBA is visually more impressive, has nice sprites and a lovely overworld, but the Megadrive wins when it comes to the combat. GBA looks.... odd. Also, I prefer the MD music but the GBA sound effects. MD had fantastic music capabilities but abominable sound effects on pretty much any and every game :\ I really love this channel, I always have, but lately it seems to be inundated with toxic and appalling Sega fanatics, who hurl expletives at anyone who doesn't follow their cult mindset, attack other people constantly whenever they support Nintendo, and follow the abysmal American bullshit 90s marketing shit of "Sega does what Nintendon't", because only an American company could by so arrogant and disgraceful. I loved all my consoles, I loved my MS and my GG and especially my MD, but I preferred SNES and GB. Hands down.

I REALLY gotta disagree with you there, buddy. The original character design is way, way better in my eyes. They have a lot more personality, kinda giving a Gibli vibe, you know? They look innocent, colorful, happy. Just compare Hans: from a cheerful lad into a edge edgelord. Not to talk about Luke's nosejob. For me the gameboy version is worse in every single way, except maybe for the palette.

Without trying to belittle Nintendo's work, I like the megadrive version much more in every single aspect. I was born with the Shining force CD and I think of it as my favorite game of that time. I played plenty of nintendo back in the day but the games I remenber foldly from back then were mostly Sega. Just my opinion.

I had/have a Mega Drive and I prefer it's version. Sure, the GBA version is a beautiful port, better than the previously seen, but I like Mega Drive art and colors, despite the limited colors and fine details, they are nicely placed, while I find GBA's kinda blurry and has washed colors, like they're in the same shade.

People still remember Jesus after 2000 years! Dark Dragon must've done _something_ wrong... Also, the story immediately contradicts itself in the opening scene, where Varios is training Max to prepare him to fight Dark Dragon.

Definitely like the sound and text better on the sega. the sprites are cool on the gba. The color definitely looks weird on the gba though and the battle seems a little wonky. But all in all good port id choose the sega version over the gba version for all those reasons plus bigger screen lol

GBA port have some limitations because of GBA hardware but the story is better, new characters, no exp "bug" from genesis, more weapons and other features. Both are worthy but the GBA have my attention.

The problem of the remake of the GBA is that the game when updating sos Sprite's becomes a current RPG but generic like most there is and nothing is special, whereas that of MD by preserving the unique aesthetics of the console 16-bit flying it unique and with its own EU personality sets it apart from others.

He's using the Gameboy Player attachment for the Gamecube. It had the real GB hardware and could play GB Original, GB Color and GB Advanced games. So this is an accurate comparison.

GBA version butchered some of the character designs. The only thing it did much better than the original was inventory management. The original wasn't the most difficult game ever, but the GBA addition of Narsha practically breaks the game, and they also made most of the enemies significantly weaker, especially the bosses. I guess it was meant to be addressed with the addition of new game+, but the increase in difficulty takes too many playthroughs to become even noticeable.

Wow... in one version, Hans is a coward. In the other version, he's a snarky douchebag. I appreciate and love the fact my very first game was given a remake, but some of the old characters didn't transition very well in terms of keeping their original personalities. I don't care if they are considered cliche for the modern times, they were who they were back then, they should remain the same now. If they have become cliche's it's probably because they come from the era that STARTED it all in the first place. Though I do like they gave Max a voice in the remake xD

Yohko M. Thats what he started his channel on back when he was the nintendo nerd then when he started doing Genesis and a few ps1 and other systems he became the Video game nerd. But thats the thing, you cant blame people back then for being huge nintendo fans since they did some much for the gaming industry. +Madara Senpai Because he did some games on others, non-Nintendo systems doesn't justify all the wrong things he said in many of his videos. Anyone with a bit of knowledge would also tell you that he is vastly biased towards Nintendo stuff, NES and SNES in particular. Also the statement that "Nintendo saved the video games industry" makes many people laugh. As if no other gaming company would have come with consoles and games at some point? Oh wait, it happened! And Nintendo actually downgraded the gaming industry because they restricted Capcom and Konami whose games could have been better on Master System than on NES. Also the Konami games on PC Engine couldn't made their way overseas presumably due to Nintendo's stranglehold on the US market. Also the GBA right here, such a joke, not even backlit despite that the Lynx, Game Gear or PC Engine GT did backlit, years before! But you know, Nintendo doesn't care, as long as they make money... And GBA's limited resolution and bad sound (in most cases) aggravate things even further...

GabrielFS Não colega vc se engana...GBA é 32bits em processador...Seus jogos são em absoluta maioria 16bits software...Cores e sons em 16bits...O que acontece aqui é que a mídia do gba é bem mas barata do que a prom do mega drive, portanto a sega pode caprichar bastante e nada mais. Quanto a um comentário que vc fez de quem faz port não conhece o hardware é meio que piada!!! Isso tem muito mais a ver com o que se paga para desenvolver um jogo, o tempo que leva e a certeza de que for bom ou razável ele vai vender bem levando em conta a vendagem do console pelo mundo.

More GBA trash? Oh wait! This time it looks okay but more likely because it's a RPG, same for Tales of Phantasia SNES vs GBA where the GBA version doesn't suffer as much as with action games. But still Mega Drive wins Shining force too, I prefer the art style, the sound is crisper (GBA sound is kinda scratchy) and it has higher resolution (which is funny because it's one of the Mega Drive games which runs in low resolution mode but it's still higher than GBA xD).
