I saw Dayuu and Juuzo as a reflection of Mako and Takeru respectively. For Mako, Dayuu is a lesson as to what happens to someone who wants to get married to their loved one so much that they go overboard and become possessive. For Takeru, Juuzo is a reflection of what he could be because he’s a kagemusha (shadow) to somebody else and if the actual person comes back, he will become nothing and the sword is the only thing that he knows. Also, I take issue with Kaoru’s depiction in this video. Kaoru is an understanding person and realizes that the retainers are struggling to follow her because they’ve been following Takeru for so long. It’s Tanba that’s cold and not Kaoru.

There is a LOT to unpack with the characterization of Takeru Shiba which I absolutely adore, that I have to go ahead & share my overall summary of this guy's building up. Throughout the show, Takeru Shiba has been shown to be a man who took his duty as a Kagemusha for Kaoru very seriously. However, as he grew throughout the show, there were 2 conflicting sides that began to grow with him: 1) He always knew in the back of his head that he wasn't going to amount to much in the long run, and never really valued his life, therefore, he started trying to seek other methods of making himself "matter" towards his existence. And herein lies his rivalry with Juzo, a man who also wanders the world with seeking establishment of his existence, but through fighting the greatest swordfight he can; as Takeru fought Juzo throughout the show, this actually started rubbing off on him, to the point where he actually secretly began to ENJOY fighting Juzo, and sought to establish his existence through strength instead; this is one of the reasons why he once flipped off on Mako when she was discussing of how he's changed ever since he began with them. 2) He began to enjoy friendship with his vassals, and began to see them as more than just mere servants of him. He started caring for them, and through that, began to actually value his own life, due to them actually caring for him in return. He's not quite used to this, however, and questions if it's really true due to his job. It does take him some time to get accustomed to it, hence why Juzo pointed out that he was "weaker" when he took him on in a rematch later. Both of these ideals are very opposing to Takeru, and he's uncertain on which path is the right one: to walk alone & simply fulfill his duty as a tool, or to try something new with actually valuing his life & working alongside others? And when Kaoru comes along & kicks him out, he at first chooses the first path. This is why I LOVE that scene where he's at his father's gravesite, Juzo comes along & challenges him to one last fight (Juzo's dialogue is perfect here too, he simply says, "Fight me. That alone should be enough for you."), and Takeru simply makes a somber smile & says, "Better than being nothing." It's at this point that Takeru decides that due to his loss as head of the Shiba Clan, and loss of his credibility to the team by lying to them for so long, if he doesn't matter as a person anymore, he might as well fill that void with thrill of combat. It's a really sad scene upon introspection, and is my absolute favorite scene in the entire show. However, later on, it's Takeru's allies who come back & actually save him from Juzo; in this sense, they're saving him from BECOMING Juzo & going down the path of just being another empty warrior who just wanders for a thrilling fight. They remind him that in the end, it doesn't matter that he lied to them, and it certainly doesn't matter that he's the false leader of the Shiba Clan. He is still Takeru, and he matters to them, and his existence does still have a place in their world. All this is why I consider Takeru Shiba as probably THE best-developed character Super Sentai has ever created. ......and why I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE HOW THEY TRANSLATED HIS CHARACTERIZATION IN SAMURAI!!!
@mimah10154 жыл бұрын
Hey come on, they had very little to work with in Samurai. I personally loved Jayden but how did you expect them to have correctly translates the whole "Lord and Vassal(servant)" thing. It didn't work from an American perspective and would leave viewers confused. I just took what Samurai had to offer and I found myself loving it, it's still my favorite PR series to date, after it comes Mystic Force. But that's just my opinion.

It reeks of producers wanting a role model and mangling a legit character in the process.

Kaoru: She's actually likable. This is what made her a welcome change in her trope. Most "real" Lord's are kind of jerks. Though cold and mechanical in bits, Kaoru still shows respect to Takeru for doing his job well. Chiaki himself said it, it would be easy if Kaoru was hateful so they could self-justify asking Takeru back but Kaoru had been competent, caring of her allies' situations and asked them properly to follow her. She did not pull rank on them or made them do inane things. Dayu: What makes Dayu interesting is that she is teetering on that edge of redemption, she's literally a lost soul just as her the title of gedoshu would imply. Yes, she had done horrible things that turned her into a literal monster but she was originally human and therefore the flow of time still affects her mentality greatly. She is still partly a person and people change as they experience things. One can say playing the shamisen for doukoku gave her some measure of peace as she seems a lot more controlled in her present. She only really dives back into her old persona when her shamisen becomes damaged but overall time had healed the wounds that had driven her mad. She was always on the precipice and she didn't know where she wanted to fall, that is until she met juuzou. Juuzou: Is interesting particularly because he's not just a murderous maniac. I think the particulars of him killing his family isn't so much he did it for the heck of it but because they kept trying to stop him. Ultimately what he sought was the ultimate battle, one that would test him to and past his limits and according to him, one that would "grind him down to the marrow". Juuzou's madness isn't overt. It's deep-seated and calculating with only that thought final goal in mind. Everything else is just a distraction in service of waiting for his next obsession. This deep-seated root of madness is what dayu lacked and through connecting with Juuzou, something she ultimately reaffirmed which is what makes him great. They're teased as possible lovers but ultimately become a sort of teacher student relationship. Doukoku: He actually has a lot of depth in my opinion. It follows a lot of tropes but generally I find that the details given to him during the show really follow a small journey of humanizing him(literally) which allowed him to act freely in the human world and would later ultimately lead to his downfall.

Man, I love Takeru as a character so f*cking much. His character portrait and slow but progressive development is just Beautifull. I already found it compelling he was extremly reluctant to call for his Retainers only because he didn't want them to risk their life. Then we learn more about Why he was actually like that and it added so many layers. In general the Twist at the end is what solidify his character as a all time favourite fictional character for me. He was already my favourite in the show, due to all those little details about his character, but now he is just up there with other fictionals. I always liked how his Harshness was NEVER ill intended and there are truth in his words. Even at the begging, calling Kotoha useless was definitly rude, but he was right, her out of control Shuriken made him loose a fight, what then led to her feeling like she had to stand in front of him to take the enemies hit to redeem herlself, and her "Trying" instead of "Doing" could have cost innocents lifes like that of the little girl. But he never hold it against her, in the same episode when they stand beside him for the final blow he doesn't say a thing and is the one saying "Together" for the combine attack. Same when the others have Ideas on what to do or how to face an enemy, he neves dismisses them and actully allows them to try. He is Harsh and Blunt, but his heart is as Honest and Noble as any Red despite being the odd one out one under the Super Sentai Format/StatusQuo. Then, I agree the PRSamurai twist on Juuzo and Dayuu is fantastic and interesting. But I still Love what they did in Shinkenger, they were still Humans, corrupted ones, but Humans. They were insane sociopaths, but they had more to them beside that, it feels realistic in its own right just like the PR modification. You know, for example how certain someone from germany is said to have made laws in favor of Animals Rights, but still went and killed people for being different... Or how in general Thief or Killers can Love their families, but they still go around doing such crimes to other.

About Takeru's adoption here's a fun fact about Samurai. When Samurai families did not have a male it was not uncommon for them to adopt an adult male to continue the family line. They especially did this if there were male children in the branch families. Such is the case with Takeru. Takeru is connected to the Samurai life but he is not the clan head he was raised to be the kagemusha for Kaoru which means that he was raised as a tool to misdirect assassinations. What Kaoru did was take advantage of the spirit of an old Samurai law which allowed her to adopt an adult male from the branch family because she's an unmarried woman with no children. And make him her heir so that he could continue the family name. There is nothing that says that she can't adopt someone older than her.

I prefer Dayu in Sentai because I can feel like it's realistic? Because she waited for someone she loved to come back and the guy didn't, I felt like the guy was a coward to just not to tell Dayu his feelings about it. He just went go on with another girl until Dayu found out and because of anger, she killed them with starting a fire. Plus, the guy soon became the instrument thus making Dayu really loved it/him so much as she felt like revenge kept her on going to live until she found Juzo.

I'd say the Lauren arc was probably Samurai's biggest misstep. First, for whatever reason, they either hired a much better actress or allowed her to show far more emotion than the core 5 rangers. She was so sympathetic, the rangers just seemed like assholes in the way they treated her. She also just came off as the type who would have looked for a way to include Jayden on the team. She seemed so lonely and yearning to make connections, that your heart kind of breaks when she's rejected. It's also such a back handed rejection that made it worse, "You're probably great and all, but we already like this guy and it would be really great if you'd back off so he can return." I'd love to see her in a future team up episode more than any of the regular Samurai Rangers.

Juuzo and Dayuu are interesting villains because they're horrible human beings with the chance at redemption, but chose not to. Dayuu is a sociopath who has some remorse for what she's done, but not for the victims whom she had harmed. The remorse she has is only because her actions led to karma biting her in the rear-end and making her life miserable. Juuzo on the other hand is a psychopath who has no regard for other people. He has no remorse for what he's done and is absolutely content with the life he ended up living. Not every villain has to be Thanos where their actions are justified in some twisted way. These are twisted people and the interactions that normal people have with them makes the story more interesting. Juuzo and Dayuu's story in Shinkenger show the mindset of people who have done similar things, but are coping with them in different ways. It is a refreshing take on "what is evil" as one has accepted the consequences of their actions while the other hasn't, but both have done similar horrible things in their lifetime. You have some sympathy for the villain who shows regret for an evil act while having none for the villain who has no regret, but neither redeemed themselves for their evil acts. They are essentially more evil than the Gedoushuu themselves and that's the point. Not every villain needs to be redeemed. Let bad guys be bad guys.

What did you think of Decker and Dayuu in Samurai and how did you feel about their back stories being connected ?
@darkglass30112 ай бұрын
@@comicbookking3446 Their stories in the Power Rangers version were boring to me. The reason why is because Westernization of stories from other cultures tend to be toned down in some way and they completely miss the point of what made that story interesting in the first place. Look at this review video comparing Shinkenger to Samurai that we're commenting under. This guy is looking at Shinkenger through a Western lens and as such CANNOT comprehend why Samurai is an inferior version of Shinkenger in every way. Decker and Dayuu's backstories being connected have absolutely no impact on the main story. Power Rangers also made them into victims of someone else's manipulation when the whole point of their characters in the original source material is that they're bad people who reap what they sow. If you were to apply what they did to Juuzo and Dayuu's characters to Joker and Harley Quinn from the Batman stories, then that would be a rough equivalent. What if Joker who's an insane psychopath who derives joy from the suffering and death of other people was actually a victim? What if Harley Quinn and Joker were married one time and then Joker forgot about it? What if Lex Luthor was the reason why Joker and Harley Quinn are bad people in the first place? That's what Power Rangers did to Juuzo and Dayuu's story: they made a story about horrible people doing horrible things who have interesting interactions with normal people into boring characters who are a victim of someone else's manipulation. They're not their own characters with their own reasons for doing things, they're someone else's pawns. Absolutely boring and an insult to the source material.

@@darkglass3011 how would you feel if Decker and Dayuu were still bad people but having different back stories so that way they can tone down the violence from the sentai since Power Rangers is a kid friendly franchise ?
@darkglass30112 ай бұрын
@@comicbookking3446 Power Rangers at its pinnacle of the Saban era appealed to teens with its mature storytelling. The last series of the era was Wild Force and the Red Ranger's parents were actually killed by the antagonist of the show. It is insulting to the audience's intelligence to tone down the "violence" when previous Power Rangers shows have done mature storytelling before AND the source material is a mature story to begin with. What's ironic is that the actor who played the Red Ranger in Wild Force is the same one who played Deker in Samurai, but Samurai is kid-friendly compared to Wild Force even though it should theoretically be more mature because of its source material. When you think about it, Samurai was a warning sign of what was to come with Super Megaforce. They have a mentality that just because the audience is young and primarily children that they can treat them as if they're stupid and make content accordingly. Instead of dumbing down the story, they should have challenged their audience's intelligence with mature themes and storytelling since they were doing a near 1:1 with the source material anyway. Samurai did a near 1:1 with Shinkenger, but did so very badly because it's as if they wanted to coddle their audience and changed the story accordingly. I'm not saying they should keep everything 100% like having Deker be a murderer like his Sentai counterpart, but make him interesting like having him be a criminal in his past life instead of a victim of someone else's machinations. Have him get an opportunity at a second chance, but make the same choices as he did the first time because he enjoys what he does and doesn't have to have empathy for other people. What separates Takeru from Juuzo is that he has people in his life that cares for him very much because of the bond he shares with them and has built over the course of the story. Juuzo is alone, but is content which is enough for him. If you make Juuzo a sympathetic character, then that would make Takeru less interesting just like if you make Joker a sympathetic character, it would make Batman less interesting. You measure the good a hero has in their character by the evil the villain has in theirs. If the villain isn't evil, then the hero is bland, just like Jaden in Samurai.

Yea so im just seeing the problem you had in ur part 1 vid, ur coming at this wanting a western story and thats not what shinkenger is. Most of ur critique doesn't understand that japan doesn't value the same story troupes u do and that the show is hard to get because its entire personality is cultural Japanese values and that characters act like actual Japanese people not the typical western TV characters ur used to

So can we say that Tzachor’s stubbornness and Sentai purism are two factors that contributed to Samurai’s (and consequently Megaforce) failure? Just always makes me wanna say that Tzachor is the Western counterpart of Shirakura; the difference being Tzachor is already long gone, while Shirakura is still lurking within Toei, destroying toku as his senile brain pleases.
@NitroIndigo5 жыл бұрын
Who's Shirakura?
@chasinthroughthedecade5 жыл бұрын
@Drive Check. Shirakura is actually a producer like Tzachor; his dumba** writers are the ones doing his bidding: first being Shoji Yonemura in the 2nd half of Decade and the Taisen films, and now Kento Shimoyama in Zi-O.

Sentai would go on to do the same thing with Robogog and Barizorg, but PR didn't even BOTHER giving them humanity or tragic backstories that time around, making The Messenger and Argus into 1-dimensional scumbags.

Those ideas were all basically fan fiction and mostly written years after the fact. And yes, I know he used to work in the show but not in a capacity that would allow him to pitch a show, his ideas were never even in consideration and are all fanwanky bullshit.

@LindsayTVFilm5 жыл бұрын
I created and Internationally built sentai themed to Scouting. So Japan hosted the World Jamboree a few years back, I didn't go but that's where the idea originated. The main plot centers around a Nate Silva-based teenage girl from mainland (who is actually not a scout), her mentor-an entrepreneur [Kelsey Taylor] from the UK living in Hong Kong, and her little brother-Bao (who is a scout in Hong Kong because their actually parents died shortly after her, Yi's, arrival). The series has 13 rangers (9 Scoutrangers and 4 Rovers) and two movies ranger (one becomes a replacement for a trans rover who is killed in Battle, the other being Bao because he is only 13 was not chosen out of the first 5-who represent the UK, Spain, Brazil, Kenya, and Canada. The Following 4 are Russia, US, Japan-Hilltop's daughter, and China-Yi). The Crimson and Navy (I) Rovers are American's with Japanese ancestry and rivals of the main antagonist, the daughter of the big bad they fought (and they fought her too). Reshda [i.e. dark green], grey, and Brown/Navy II-Hilltop's son are from Japan. So 4 Japanese, 3 Americans (technically 4 as Blue and White are fraternal twin sisters who were adopted by different couples), 2 who are references to Battle Fever J (Kenya and Russia, as the USSR, were the Black and Orange rangers in the 3rd sentai), and the first time a Dinosaur-themed ranger appears in a non-Dino-themed season (American Raptor-added in Requirement 7, which is Ironic as the Timberwolves are from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA and the Raptors are from Toronto, Canada. So that's just a bunch of fan jokes waiting to happen). It's also the first team with a ranger of African decent (Kenya Elephant).

Actually, I prefer Dayuu and Deker’s backstory. Dayuu’s Shinkenger is tragic sure. But the reason why she won’t kill him and that fact he doesn’t even remember her, is heartbreaking. To me, it makes more sense. Although, regarding the backstory of the Shinkenger vs Rangers, I prefer the Shinkenger. I mean, with Rangers, the only translate Jayden, Kevin and Emily’s backstory. We don’t even know Mike’s and Mia’s. With Chiaki, you find out why he is the way he is because his Dad wanted him to want the Samurai way, instead of it being forced upon him and with Mako, Samurai way took mental toll on her Mom and even though, her parents didn’t want her to go through that, her grandma basically forced them to make her go through it

It is logical that half-human half-demons are completely defined by their past. Ghosts emerge from the past after all, emotions that get stuck between space and time and don't fade. When they stopped being human, they also became stagnant because their power derived directly from the pain of their own existence. And the only way to ease that pain and find peace is to cease to exist.

On Takeru: "he has no real connection to the shiba family or the samurai lifestyle" da faq? He was specifically raised as a Kagemusha in service to the Shiba family in the ways similar to the Shinkengers. Like the point of standoffish nature in the beginning of the series is then recontextualized with the twist on his desire/duty to not build connection to the rest of the group bc of the fact that he's not the head of the family. His crisis in the 3rd act isn't because he felt "betrayed" it's bc of a struggle from reconciling those connections he built and the sense of guilt that he feels for decieving them for so long mixed with a crisis of identity. After being relieved of his duty, Takeru is forced to confront the fact that his entire life was a lie. Hence the naming of the series and the main theme of shinkenger: "Shin Ken" i.e. True Sword. His character resolution comes with the assurance that he is who he is and that he is always has been Shiba Takeru
