@@David-du4mj tbh I never understood why your power being too weak or not having one was a reason to kill children. From what I understood, they should have death feedback regardless of having their power because it was programmed genetically, but if that was true then there would be no reason to kill them.

One of the best done "dark" settings I've seen. The aesthetics may be rural, peaceful and elegant, but under the coating of beauty is a thousand-year-long foundation of filth, blood and cruelty. In general a very well executed dystopian novel.

I watched 'Shinsekai Yori' when I was younger, about six years ago, when I first got into anime. It was interesting, but I didn't understand the plot very well back then. Years later, I stopped watching anime, only occasionally watching a couple of times. Then, last night, I suddenly felt the urge to watch a serious anime, and 'Shinsekai Yori' popped up in my mind, so I decided to rewatch it. After a few episodes, I was already hooked. The experience felt different from what I remembered watching years ago; it was like a breath of fresh air. The storyline completely blew my mind. The first part of the series gave off a 'cult-like' vibe, and I could relate it to other films like Ari Aster's 'Midsommar.' However, in the second part, starting around episode 12, the tone changed, and it started feeling like a horror series from that point on. The plot twist revealed in the final part left me speechless! I found myself attached to Saki, and it's sad that it's over, but nevertheless, it was a great show.

DeadFox there is worse and better though. The humans with cantus did more than worry about survival, they wanted to retain power and control. Squeeler only wanted equality for his kind ( sentient and intelligent ). People only sympathize more with the humans because they look human. If monsters did what the people did, everyone would be questioning their "morals". That's what makes Saki a great character, she understand both sides objectively. And post squeeler saga, you notice she starts making changes ( even little ones) and screwing over controlling rules.

I love the ending of this anime, it's just the perfect kind of ambiguous ending that ties up loose ends but leaves us with the humans no longer being seen as untouchable. To put it in the words of Ivan from iron man 2 "if you can make God bleed people will cease to believe in him. There will be blood in the water, the sharks will come." Its been seen many times throughout history, a seemingly invisible civilization slowly loses its prominence as its rivals gain power. Sure they may still put down rebellions or win wars against those who challenge them, but eventually, all at once, all the cards fall into the right place and their declining power will be laid bare in front of the world.

This is one of the few anime I feel is on the level of great dystopian novels such as 1984 and Brave New World. It obviously takes great inspiration from both, and offers an interesting and poignant message to consider by the end. The idea of the villain being a mirror for humans to stare into by the end is a chilling reminder of how morality is subjective and ultimately, selfish. No doubt if it were a novel it'd be considered a masterpiece. Edit: Found out it’s a book lmao 😂 still true tho

This is why Utter and Total peace is an unreachable goal. We simply have not yet evolved to a state where it's comprehensible. This world has so many differing cultures and structures, and humanity will always carry a desire to enslave the "lesser" or "other."

Utter and total peace is definitely reachable, if every human dies

Watched it again at the beginning if this month. It was a rollercoaster, had to read the novel, there's a lot of plot holes I'll have to figure out by myself or just forget about it because there's no answer. I think that's what's haunting. Like for example, why Shun? There's mo answer, just bad things happening to good people.

No, the characters learn that their system does need to change. Their predecessors didn't recognize that. The issue is that they don't know of anything better.
