I'm Japanese, I just wanna say in my opinion. Shinto is not kind of Religion. I think,,,, it's not so strict. 神道 means "way of the gods " = just do good behavior. That's it. Here in Japan, there are a lot of disaster. Earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption... etc People think, Gods did every disaster. beyond human understanding things. Also good thing too. Sunrise, raining etc people are afraid to gods. also respected to gods. That is the spirit of the Japanese people. We will not be learned about Shinto. But we knows what is good behavior (way of the gods). The essence of shinto is Kami. The divine spirit found in all things. Kami-sama are everywhere. and looking at us. That's why Japanese are too strict, and too shy.

I think most(all?) of the Gods(kami) in shrines were originally real existed people who were worshipped from people's respect or fear of curse(if they died with regret). Somehow they turned into Gods of nature who were worshipped for people's benefit.

conor henderson Japanese people have always had a God in their mind from ancient times, but the Gods (spirits) worshipped (or entrapped) in shrines are their great ancestors. You don't believe Izumo's "Kuni-Yuzuri" as a real history? Why?

I'm asking you about Gods(Kami) in major shrines in Japan. We Japanese even don't know what Kami exactly means. It could just mean great spirits of the deads. Many of them are from Izumo dynasty which was destroyed by Tenson-zoku. You don't believe this history?

I'm particularly an atheist, but I think religious excercise is amazing when it doesn't involve try to convince other that your religion is the only one that is true. Like I said I'm atheist, but I'm half buddhist too, but I would love to pay my respects in a Shinto shrine experience even a little bit of that shinto spirit. I also a back man, so I searching for my own ancestry, reading and learnnig more about afro-religions. Religion, when it's not strict to a institutional practice it can promote a real deep chance in the life of a faithful person. I think that if a person can be so bothered because of the faith of others at the point they need to prove to other that their religion is the true it's because their religion isn't true even to themselves. I faithful person just live the religion, independently of others. It's what I think.

Is there any initiation ritual in this religion? or any kind of ceremony to became in a shintoist.?
@tc23349 жыл бұрын
carmeliux Méndez In a word, no. There are Shinto rites at different points of life like birth, marriage etc. but no conversion or initiation rites really exist because Shintoism is an earth-based, ethnic religion. The Japanese believed in being in tune with nature and honoring the spirits of it and your ancestors. As you are born to your parents (you're initiated into your family) and as you are earthling (you're automatically initiated to the 'Earth religion', if you will). Despite the fact that Islam and Christianity are the world's largest religions, most religions of the world especially earth-based and ethnic religions (Hinduism, Shintoism, Asatru etc.) aren't built around the concept that you are a part of an "us or them" dynamic (i.e. Muslims vs. Kaffirs [non-Muslims] or Christians vs. infidels). These religions are made for the human connection with nature, not for 'salvation' after death.

I've always been an atheist and if I've worshipped anything it is nature for most of my life, so that makes me a 'Pantheist' for people who need to use labels. Having studied Buddhism I would now call myself a pantheistic Buddhist because I have formally taken Refuge and live my life according to the 5 lay Precepts and am an active practitioner (as opposed to just having a couple of statues and some books by the Dalai Lama, not that there's anything wrong with that!). See the beauty and wonder of the natural world and the universe- really see and treasure it- and live a compassionate, altruistic life and avoid causing suffering. Pretty hard to go wrong doing that.
@xxcupcakexattackxx8 жыл бұрын
pantheism means that you believe in every god, worship of things in nature is animism
@mindrolling248 жыл бұрын
It actually has a few quite disparate definitions. I take it to mean that I see the divine in the relative 'reality' of nature and the universe. I know pantheism can also mean a belief that accepts all gods but I do not view it that way myself. I don't worship anything- I just appreciate the very wonder of being alive and able to appreciate life, the universe and everything. Maybe I should revise the pantheism label- but I wouldn't replace it with animism.
@xxcupcakexattackxx8 жыл бұрын
you just defined animist spirituality
@mindrolling248 жыл бұрын
You said animism is the "worship of things in nature" and as I said, strictly speaking I do not worship anything, but I do revere the natural world and, as a Buddhist who agrees with the truth of interdependent origination, I believe that all phenomena are linked. I find it strange that there are so many people who like to pigeon hole others and denigrate their beliefs on KZbin. I know what I do and what I do not do, not only from years of meditation and study (including both personal research and at university) so I don't particularly care what others think they know about me and my thoughts and feelings.
@xxcupcakexattackxx8 жыл бұрын
im not denigrating your beliefs. you, however are pidgeonholing animism. animism is worship of nature, yes, but it can be more and different. recognizing spiritual forces within specific aspects of nature itself. lose the passive aggressive attitude it isnt my fault you cant be bothered to google what things mean. dont take that out on me. swerve.

Unlike Judaism, Christianity, Islam or Buddhism, Shintoism emerged when there was no writing system. It is not exactly a religion, but is more like a belief, and is about the sensitivity rather than the truth. It is also about whether things are beautiful or not (according to the Japanese aesthetics) rather than being logical, rational, or even right or wrong. In the Japanese minds, everything is a part of the whole universe. There is no nature or individual: not only the notional distinction between them but also the actual words themselves too, as the Japanese words, 自然 (nature) or 個人 (individual) were created only AFTER the Meiji Restoration for the translation of the new coming Western words, nature and individual when also the word and the concept of religion (宗教) came into Japan. One could also put it this way: in Shintoism and in the Japanese minds, the sensitivity is placed above the Reason, and every problem is an integral part of the whole.
@Amitparanjape7 жыл бұрын

I've noticed that a lot of people think that Kami literally means god. It does but it also means spirit and the like. So when they say that you ancestors become kami that can be in the sense that they become spirits so there can be kami = god and kami = spirit. At least that's how I see it. And my favorite kami are tenjin and Ebisu.
@kaos23177 жыл бұрын
You're quite right. Kami doesn't mean "god" in Western terms. There was no Japanese word for "God" or "gods" until the West came and used their own concepts to try to understand the Japanese mindset. Spirit is better but even this word doesn't fully define the concept of Kami. There is no Western equivalent, but "gods" and Spirit, being the most relatable, is the most common reference

So this is my testimony about getting back into the church after 10 years of being out of it. For awhile I was an atheist and then an agnostic, however, God delivered me out of a difficult and strange period of my life that left me without doubt of His existence and goodness. It's a bit of a long read, so bear with me. A couple weeks into February of 2018 I experienced some dreams of a strange nature during a time where I was isolated, depressed, and desperate. I've dealt with anxiety and depression for along time and I was at the end of my rope. I had considered seriously commiting suicide two years ago and when the depression hit this time I couldn't take it anymore. I was searching desperately for something that would allow me to leave the situation I was in. I was addicted to gaming and was very isolated. I also fell heavily into a series of books I was re-reading at the time that I had a great obsession with, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King. A few months into a reread of this series I had a dreams in February 2018 one of which I think was prophetic, having to do with seeing a woman and man in the dream that I later saw the next day while walking and while watching TV. This was a man and woman that I hadn't met or seen before.There were also aspects of the dreams (which I can't easily get into because it's difficult to explain due to the content) that led me to believe that The Dark Tower series having to do with parallel universes was real. I became convinced that there was a world parallel to ours, like the books, that I could gain access to if I used certain objects that I had in my possession . After weird events also began occuring in my home, with my television, and with me, I told my parents about all of it. They were adamant that what I was experiencing was demonic deception and that I should cease reading these books and give myself over to God. Being stubborn and delusional I decided to continue in what I thought was a great discovery and a way out of my situation. Events transpired over the next few days that left me in a state of confusion and despair. My father also ended up in the hospital that week. It wasn't until I began to cry out to Jesus that things began to change. I began to hear from God during this time. I felt like I should rid myself of the books as well as the stuff I had gathered connected to them. I eventually ended up getting rid of all the books and objects connected to them, as well as a lot of other stuff including my games. We were doing some work in my room at the time so luckily I had something to help keep my mind off what had been happening as well as grow in the word from listening to 107.9 on my radio. When we finally returned to church a couple weeks later the sermon and series was about the book of Daniel, some of which has to do with prophetic dreams and visions among other things. I know now that this wasn't a coincidence. Once I started getting involved in the church again and reading the Bible I found out that these things really aren't as uncommon or unbelievable as they seem. My mens bible study at the time had members that had experienced supernatural and amazing things as well. I know this isn't going to sound credible if you aren't a Christian. Back when I didn't believe, these stories didn't seem compelling or true to me. However I can tell you that if you reach out to God wholeheartedly he will reveal himself to you. I'd like to ask that if you're going through something right now, some kind of challenge or difficulty that you reach out to God and ask him to help you. Sometimes it may not seem like anything is happening, but if you're willing to hold on and push through you can see him move in your situation in miraculous ways. Here's more about the Gospel here: www.tvcresources.net/resource-library/articles/the-gospel-of-jesus-christ If any of you would like to receive or feel led to receive Jesus Christ as your saviour pray this and believe it with all your heart. Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and there is nothing that I can do to save myself. I confess my complete helplessness to forgive my own sin or to work my way to heaven. At this moment I trust Christ alone as the One who bore my sin when He died on the cross. I believe that He did all that will ever be necessary for me to stand in your holy presence. I thank you that Christ was raised from the dead as a guarantee of my own resurrection. As best as I can, I now transfer my trust to Him. I am grateful that He has promised to receive me despite my many sins and failures. Father, I take you at your word. I thank you that I can face death now that you are my Savior. Thank you for the assurance that you will walk with me through the deep valley. Thank you for hearing this prayer. In Jesus’ Name. Amen. Good luck and may God bless you! And remember satan is a spirit of fear

@truthseeker0000007 жыл бұрын
RexusprimeIX If Jesus had the power to change atoms. He sure didn't have the power to stop the Romans crucifying him. LOL And please spare me the 'reason' for his death experience - that he died for our sins. That's such nonsense! If he was God, he didn't have to come down to earth to suffer and die as a man. If he is 'god' he sure went the long round about way to die for the 'sins' that HE pronounced man had committed. When the shinto believe there is a god in everything, it is in reference to the 'god force' in everything. The gods in Shintoism is NOT viewed the same way the Abrahamic 'god' is viewed. That of a male deity, man-god the way Christians believe their 'God' Yaweh/ Jesus to be. You can't understand the idea of 'god' in Shinto because in your mind you are thinking of 'god' from an Abrahamic perspective. So there is no 'god of wifi' man in the sky deity the way you think it is and half mockingly suggest it is so.

-Attributing a divine character to inanimate elements of nature and objects? Where I come from, we call that animism. -Ancestor worship and deification? Yeah, well, neighbouring China has that as well, and pretty much every ancient civilisation/prehistoric culture you can think of did that, where I come from we just call that shamanism. Not exactly what I'd call "unique".
@00fabian78 жыл бұрын
Most religions aren't all that original. Christianity, catholicism, judaism and islam all share many characteristics. The prophets in these religions in turn have a lot in common with other ancient religions indigenous to the land where they come from (e.g. the ancient Egyptian faith). The Sikh faith and Buddhism share a lot too. Now even though these religions (or spiritual guidings etc.) aren't all that 'unique' in their characteristics, their practision and what flows out of the faith can be seen as quite unique. For example for the Shinto faith many architectually unique buildings came into being, same with cultural works and influences in the history of the land. Even though it may only seem like 'simple animism' looking purely at characteristics, the so called 'output' of the religion is unique compared to other animism religions (the output of the Shinto religion in Japan is very different compared to animism religions in regions/tribes/countries within Africa). Hope this gives a more nuanced look on how many religions can still be very unique in the output they give.

Things might get better for a second, but even the best things fade away & the empires that bring knowledge & luxury to the world eventually fall. For things to truly get better we must all sacrifice our selfish desires & live together in love, but that will never happen. So maybe if just a few could do it, but where will we find a few people who's intentions are pure & can not be corrupted by this world? They don't exist. The world is corrupted & has only one end, at the very least the sun destroys us all, but Jesus, a true loving person, to give everything of himself, even his own life, to show the world how to love. That has to be everlasting, that has to be from God.

***** This is the Christians hope; that love binds everything together, that love will conquer all, that love can heal all wounds...That Jesus is love & that the greatest love is that one lay down his life for his friends.

A true samurai would completely understand Jesus's self sacrifice. Seems very in line with Japanese ideals & Bushido to me. How many tales of heroism end with one samurai giving his live so his loved ones may live on?

+イエーツアレクサンダー So you agree with Hitler & the white supremacists. No civilization is strong enough to stand the test of time; they become rigid & brittle. Even the sun & stars will fail the test of time. Only the bonds of love will last through eternity.

This is really vague lol

It is vague if you see it thru a Western mindset, use Western terms and concepts to understand. It's like trying to place a square piece in a round hole, it won't fit or fit improperly. To clear the vagueness, best to empty your mind, like a cup of tea so you, like the tea cup may fully take in something new....new tea; new concepts.
