I do like your channel. Mostly short videos that are well presented, although i don't play modded games or ST:O, I appreciate work like this where ships fit into the aesthetics of the Race / Culture / time. What springs to mind is the Dominion War game where I fell in love with the Cardassian Tonga Class. It was different to traditional designs but still fitted into the universe. I also remember finding artwork of ship from BSG before the Deadlock game, a dozen ships or so with mostly the battlestar design with a few odder ones, but all fitted into the universe and you could just imagine the story and tactics behind each one. Nice little loveletters to individual ship classes. Great stuff.

I don't remember this ship being in Armada II. Then again, I usually didn't play as the Cardassians. When I did, I didn't memorize the class names. What I did do is figure out which ship classes had the best weapons to take out a tactical fusion cube with minimal effort to the surprise of my opponent. Speaking of which, those fusion cubes would be an excellent April Fools Day video (those I generally dislike those types of videos).
@occultatumquaestio52263 жыл бұрын
Small, fast, and nimble, but with a punch. Give the condition of the Cardassians compared to the great powers of the Alpha and Beta quadrants, this was indeed a useful vessel as a balance between hit & run on larger cruisers and screening against smaller fighters/raiders.
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
Yeah the cardassian ships are never going to match the major powers so they really put emphasis mid size ships that can hold their own while still being used in large numbers

I like the sound of Raiy-sa-lak. Hmmm. So, like the Defiant program was akin to a small frame "pocket battleship" in the federation building program after wolf 359. So to was the rasilisk to the cardassian's? Or something similar?
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
so they arrive at a similar conclusion but start from almost opposite ends. remember defiant was designed to take on much larger borg cubes. Rasilak was intended to engage small ships ranking from about 20m-150m. so its funny how the intended use for a design doesn't end up being how its actually deployed.

What you described is a pre-WW I destroyer. Sometime in the late 1800's a self-propelled torpedo was mated to a a very fast speedboat to creae the torpedo boat. It ws so fast and nimble that teh slow firing and training main guns on battleships and even cruisers could not hit them before they launch a potentially battleship-sinking (or at least crippling) torpedo. The answer was a boat bigger than the torpedo boat taht was faster and had quick firing guns. They screened for teh fleet and hunted down torpedo boats. Teh Germans called them torpedojagers (torpedo hunters). The British called them torpedoboat destroyers. The name was later shortened to simply "destroyers".
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
love the historical parallels and i think it makes sense given the scale creep that develops in the 24th century much like the dreadnought race that developed in the run up to ww1.
@ycplum70623 жыл бұрын
@@venomgeekmedia9886 I found what you said about a line formation interesting. Line formations are used when the the range of the weapons in your fleet is more or less uniform and you need to concentrate firepower. That is where you get the Line of Battle ships (aka Ships of the Line). Modern navies do not have that today because their really isn't a need missiles. It is better to stay in concentric layers for concentrated air and submarine defense. I would have though that combat ranges would be further away, well beyond visual range and near the edge of detection. In such a case, I would not think they would use a line formation. However, I guess they could not allow that because space battles would be boring on TV. LOL
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
@@ycplum7062 yeah. so even in the modern day there is formation, its just a different kind. given that phasers are unguided i could see formations to chain phaser fire together being useful. although they would be spaced across vast distances. but a Galor line is a pretty formidable formation.

@@venomgeekmedia9886 Unless you strike at the flank, but in the Star Trek Universe, you may or may not get detected before hand, depending on plot requirements. LOL They were always vague on detecting warp signitures. You would think a ship at warp would arrive before teh signiture is detected.
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
@@ycplum7062 yeah for communications and sensors to work they are 'subspace' so travel at superluminal speeds. and its preventing that kind of flanking that the Rasilak does.

So, we have yet another vessel that resembles a hatchet or mace, which is a common Cardassian design. She's also a good fit for Cardassian strategic doctrine, since she's a small ship they can crank out rapidly in large numbers on the Union's limited resources and under the Dominion, I could imagine the Galor class ships being phased out, in favour of more Rasilaks, to fill a similar role to the Jem'Hadar bugships.
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
yeah i never thought about the weapon motif until someone mentioned it with the hutet. actually makes them a lot like the klingons. it wouldn't be the galor phased out in favour of Rasilaks, more the older Kulinors and Lakats. but the Rasilak did actually work better along the bugs than the hedeki which was more of a gunboat. whereas the Rasilak worked very well in more aggressive role.
@weldonwin3 жыл бұрын
@@venomgeekmedia9886 Also, I think I was the one who pointed out that the Hutet resembled a double-bitted axe or hammer and that Cardassian ships tended to resemble maces, which further fit with the Egyptian dessert theme, since maces were the traditional weapon of ancient Egyptian infantry

Is Flash Trek still around? Something called Stellar Trek is on the app store for free. It resembles it, but either from a different maker or they changed all the assets and kept the names of ships, but changed to different models of even what would be considered close to it. I assume to stop from being copy claimed. As I recall there were two flash games of Trek. One you were just the Federation and the other you could choose one of several races, including Cardassian and work yourself up from a shuttle basically to the big boys if each and every race included.

@@venomgeekmedia9886 I have to imagine some kind of coincidence as I have heard the designers mentioning separate inspirations for both factions but they happened to allies in the series. Never did I hear them mentioning designing the factions together. I did paint a good model of a Galor class and the blue/ gray paint on the models seem to get dulled out on the screen.
