Mississagi, the oldest-Non Operational Canadian flagged laker on the Great Lakes, sailed her last in late 2020. The vessel began its career in 1943 when it was launched at Great Lakes Engineering Works in Ecorse, Michigan, as the Hill Annex.

It’s sad knowing that the Manistee, Mississagi and Ojibway are just history now. Thank god there are videos of them doing their many years on the Lakes. They are grand veterans that deserve to be remembered with many stories told of their long careers. ❤

Built in 1943 which makes her younger than me. She was a great steam powered cargo ship in her time.

Forgot to say that as a latecomer to the Y-T world of shipping content, I never saw the Mississagi in operation. :( I've missed out on a lot so am thankful for this view of her final trip under her own steam. It's sad that after a lifetime of usefulness, to be scrapped. I know there can only be so many ship museums, but it's a shame that she can't be turned into a barge at least. Some may look at her and only see a pile of scrap metal but to others of us, she is so much more. Thank you, Bill.

The scrapping of the Manistee and Mississagi really does mark the end of an era, sure we have the AAA's, the Alpena and the other iconic pilot house forward lakers, but these 2 were different in their own special way, to me they resembled what ore boats of days gone by looked like and to me were the definition of an ore boat. But their ultimate purpose was to serve and in my humble opinion they will continue to serve by providing winter employment in Ontario, even if it does mean they must meet their ends...

It's really sad when they are on their own power going to the yard. Yes there are reasons why she has to. She's still beautiful and floating gently on the water.. Very heartbreaking! She ll be missed!

i know nothing about these (or most) boats. i would guess though it's being retired simply due to age. all those years of carrying heavy cargo and all the rough seas it has been through, have probably left the hull feeling pretty tired and is structurally suffering from metal fatigue. i might add, a nice musical selection for it's retirement. quite beautiful.
