I was on the MSC Seashore in April and I use a scooter. I came home and sent a VERY long email to MSC about the lack of accessability on that ship. Too many venues without auto opening doors, the buffet serving stations are too high, there are no disability friendly tables in the buffet, the lack of pool entrances without ladders. It astounds me that they are building brand new cruise ships without these things for disabled people.
@WHEEL_AROUND_THE_WORLD6 сағат бұрын
It’s so frustrating to hear that, especially on a brand-new ship! Accessibility should be a top priority from the start, not an afterthought. Did MSC respond to your email? I’d be curious to know if they acknowledged the issues or mentioned any plans to improve. It's baffling that something as simple as automatic doors and accessible pool entrances isn’t standard yet!

I’m surprised as I’ve been on a few cruises and I’ve noticed on most that there is an electric lift chair to get in and out of at least one pool for the guests. The high sides, flat areas and stairs are necessary to reduce the splash in heavy seas. I’d be contacting this cruise line asap and outlining the shortcomings. I think they would be receptive.

For real if i were in a wheelchair and this happens to me, i'd be suing their asses for false advertising on handicapped access. My mom is 80% blind, and the tthing is that i'm always scared that if i ever gift her a cruise vacation like this one and get to where nothing is accessible to her at all, i'd be suing big time. How can they be that mediocre to not even put RAMPS in those wide stairs? I just think they've put you in this room no because they are "full", from how it looks and how far it is you must've been in a small staff room. Anyways, hope this was still enjoyable for you!

Took a cruise on Holland America from Seattle to Alaska. I’m able to walk for short distances and stand for short periods of time. This being my first cruise, I went with relatives who’ve gone on a lot of cruises, so they helped me with the planning. I went with a standard room, taking my chance. My relatives helped me pick a good room in a good location on the ship to make sure I was close to the food area, casino, and the back deck. I would go either earlier or later to avoid the crowds at the buffet. It’s impossible to wheel around during the rush of hungry people. Specialized dining is a lot easier if they don’t have stairs and you’re OK with the extra cost. But be careful on your excursions off the boat if the ramp is a little wet. Rolling off a 5-story ramp is quite dangerous with those hard rubber tires. Employees are supposed to help, but not always. Remember, it’s a boat. The boat has to be able to withstand a certain amount of degree tilt in any direction, so everything has to be nailed down and any water contained. Hope things get a little better.

Lower hand-wash stations (mostly for kids, but you can roll under easily too), actual ADA doors and bathrooms, pool lifts if you coordinate with Guest Services, etc. I highly suggest trying a Dream Class ship (Dream or Fantasy), but a Magic Class (Magic and Wonder) or Wish Class (Wish, Treasure, and Destiny) are also good options. 😊

You are lucky in that you are media savvy and the cruise industry are under a spotlight in this social media age, for the likes of us crinklies from a past era where disability was a ‘chuck away’ word in that absolutely nothing was thought through for a disabled user. At best the ramp did not have a step, at worst they put you in a ‘forgotten’ room down a long corridor where it was a battle between you or your wheelchair for access and the bathroom was just a joke, it has moved on with the speed of a asthmatic snail to make some improvements, but I find that the disabled passenger is still the afterthought in the design, build and operation of cruise ships (or for that matter ANY transport or holiday) Being even more feeble and with a lower tolerance of ‘customer services’ excuses I find the stress levels are better managed by limiting myself to the ‘specialist’ holiday companies that have experience in what the disabled traveller needs and which hotels / restaurants etc… that can provide a wide range of specialist adaptations - cruise liners are not on that list, especially P&O who I found treat politely given and reasonable requests with distain and incompetence.

I understand having so many steps in areas built in ground level due to the fact you need to consider the grounds foundation. Especially areas built around a slope and having to use steps to navigate elevations in the ground. But why on earth would they build so many steps on a cruise ship when you can decide where to put the floor. I think it’s lazy planning and with a little more brainstorming I’m sure making all leveled floors is very much possible.
@WHEEL_AROUND_THE_WORLD6 сағат бұрын
You’re spot on about the flexibility cruise ships have when designing their layouts! It does feel like a missed opportunity when steps are added unnecessarily. With proper planning and a focus on inclusivity, creating level floors or ramps should absolutely be achievable. It's frustrating to see accessibility overlooked when it could make such a big difference for so many people. Lazy planning sums it up perfectly!

I have been on this ship I use a powered wheelchair, I used the pool, they have a hoist. I used the bowling alley one end had access. Of course bar stools are secure, it's a ship it goes in storms. They have accessible hand sanitizers. They have tables for wheelchair users and a quick word to staff will get non, wheelchair users cleared out for you. A quick word to staff will get you the assistance you need. I do think you are being unfair to MSC staff. I think you also need to think about things like why heavy bar stools are fastened down for example, some things have to be for safety and you don't mention that you can't be stationary for 5 minutes without staff asking what you want to drink. They do that for everyone. Please, as a campaigner for disability rights of over 30 years, show the positives. Tell people about the ways to enjoy a cruise if they are a wheelchair user. Also although 20% are Disabled People, 20% are not wheelchair users. It is a fraction of that, so don't use misleading data. I have cruised many times over 4 different cruise lines and have found it one of the easiest ways to holiday as I can't fly. I use a train to the port, which can take 2 or 3 days, so I have to plan like mad, even if my brain damage struggles with that. This is where you went wrong. Your lack of planning and research. Yes the campaigner in me wants full access in all things but that is tempered with realism and over 30 years experience a wheelchair user. I prefer to show the issues but highlight what you can do more than what you can't. Some things are not possible on a ship due to things like storms.

There is plenty of information online about all the different cruise ships and their rooms and facilities. If you have specific expectations you need to do your home work before booking to make sure the things you want are avaiable.

In 2024 that’s just an L take. Anything that is built for the masses should really be made accessible nowadays without having to beg for it. In many countries this is a legal anti-discrimination requirement.

Thanks Karen, I had a gap in my Europe trip and thought, why not try a cruise? The boats weren’t full, so I figured, let’s give it a go. Am I regretting it? Absolutely. Would I have booked it if I knew it would be this much of a disaster? No way. The solution to this is easy: 1. Make more accessible rooms. 2. Only allow people with disabilities to book these rooms. 3. Require proof of disability, similar to how Disney manages accessible assistance at parks. 4. Improve the booking process for people with disabilities. Follow these four basic steps, and most of the problems would be fixed. It is not hard! Everybody should be able to book a cruise with confidence. All boats should be accessible and inclusive, allowing people with disabilities to book whenever they want, just like able-bodied people. After all, that’s what true inclusion is all about. Thanks again, Karen, for your comments!

So he wants a ramp into the water...for the chair? I've seen guests move from mobility devices to the edge around the pool. Did he ask if they have a mobile lift? I still haven't seen any fault on the part of MSC.

For many pools, there is often a lift where the user can transfer from their chair to a seat and be lowered into the water. Unfortunately, on this ship the entire pool deck in not accessible. I think part the design is to keep most of the pool water in one place during rough seas. There does look like there is room to create an interesting ramp that would allow people who use a chair to navigate up, cross over the barrier with a landing that includes a turning radius and then down to the pool deck. For a new ship the lack of different heights among public fixtures, including knee clearances and whole areas that are not accessible amazes me. That being said, I design public areas in the US and have only been on smaller boats for sight-seeing and SCUBA diving.
