I've been in logistics and this is the only way to be sure something will get there the way it left your shop. Small, light stuff is easy to toss around and that's exactly how it's treated. I've seen whole pallets of Amazon stuff where ~20% of the goods are damaged before they even get to the truck! Now I'm making furniture and this is exactly what I needed to see. I'll be going w/ internal frames because there's less surface irregularities to catch on and it'll stack better. You do not want to piss off a driver... ;) Thanks! Great info!

Excellent video! I crate and ship my artwork, and the last thing I want is for it to arrive damaged. First rate "how to crate" video. I am shippping some sculptures abroad and will follow this method. Like the glass on everything detail , and the bombproof notion. We spend ages making these things, send them, and the last thing you want is to get a message from the otherside of the universe ,that the granite base is broken.

Wish I could see the actual building process. It's great to know how to pack the crate but I know nothing about the engineering of these and I'd love to see the thing getting put together first

It's pretty basic. Just measure the boards so they fit, and screw and nail the planks to the sides. Add planks to the bottom that fit a forklift truck, and you're done. Look up measurements for pallets for that. Wandel has a video where he put the strips on the inside. Matter of taste, I suppose. I have to ship a fine art mannequin (you can see her in a few videos on my channel). Could you look at her and give me any advice or cheats you might be able to share? I found this video very useful I didn't consider an exoskeleton. Of course I'm faced with a unique set of challenges, but you definitely helped me to the right path. The crate will need to be reused over and over again during the next three years. My girl is going on tour. Thanks

I would of shipped the upside down to avoid stress on the legs in shipping. This way you wouldn't have to put plywood on top of the foam on the bottom

I would never put a fragile sticker etc. on any package, no matter how delicate. Just attracts spiteful attention to your item. My father used to work in shipping, and they had a saying that a Fragile sticker just meant "throw it farther and harder". He himself wouldn't do that, but lots of guys would (and do).

My local building center calls it beadboard, it's just 2" thick styrofoam. I can't remember what Lowes and HD call it.

I have a crate like this except it is put together with nails, not screws. How do I break it up so I can throw it away? The garbage men won't take something this big.

Use a sawzall with a long hacksaw blade. Cut through the nails to knock it down, then change to a 'wrecking' blade, and cut the pieces up smaller. Or, put an ad on Craigslist for a free crate and it will be gone in a day or two.

You either use a pallet jack to move them to a lift gate on the truck or you need a forklift if the truck doesn't have a lift gate. I moved them all to a low trailer and brought them a block down from my shop to a moving company. FedEx picked them up there and the company loaded them all into the truck with the forklift for $50. FedEx would have charged $130 to use the lift gate.

CDNBaconRich, I got it at my local building center but they no longer carry it. I am using the blue foam insulation sheets now even though they cost more. You can get these at Home Depot or Lowes.

It’s no different than packing something in a cardboard box that weighs 70 pounds. Well within the weight and size limits for a FedEx parcel.

Here's a tip: If I need a video to help me learn something as detailed as this, adding music not only adds no value, it distracts from the material I'm trying to learn. Best to keep music soundtracks for entertainment videos, not education.
