I used to work overlooking a bulk goods port. Once they had an Oliver Hazard Perry class visit. Was quite different. The bulk carriers would slowly trail black smoke on start up, hours before leaving. The frigate belched white smoke and left within half an hour.

+DraGma. Ships in the UK have similar standards on most of their ships. I was once called to a chartered Greek car ferry and simply could not believe what I was seeing. At first, I thought that the floor was flooded, but I soon discovered that I was walking around in half an inch of oil, fuel and rust.
@wysoft7 жыл бұрын
I do tech service work on various marine vessels. Out of all the years I've been doing it, the only ones who ever tried to stiff us on payment was a Greek owned and operated vessel. The vessel operators agreed to pay in Master's cash based on an estimate. I completed the job, submitted the report to the Captain for acceptance and payment, Captain claims that he cannot pay in Master's cash for the job completed, which came in under estimate. We are talking a couple thousand dollars here. It came to threatening to go to the bridge and undo the work that I had done, and that the Coast Guard would be contacted and notified that the vessel was not able to operate in US waters. Suddenly the Captain disappears into his state room and returns with cash in hand to the exact amount specified.

These types of videos always amaze me that such feats of engineering excellence have been achieved by people of flesh and blood, just like us, with no divine intervention. There are two different worlds, one holds the people always complaining and all the movie stars and the football hotshots, and the other holds people who work relentlessly and silently everyday so that the former gets a roof to live under with safety and security and opulence.
@awaitingthetrumpetcall45292 жыл бұрын
I am doubly amazed because today I watched videos of industrial sized steam engines that powered factories and locomotives. Those videos led me to this one.
@agems56 Жыл бұрын
How can you be sure that no divine intervention was present? All of our separate talents were surely given by someone or something! We are all put here for a purpose, no matter how small a contribution we make!
@wessmith74082 жыл бұрын
I KNOW I'M A FEW YEARS LATE HERE but I just discovered this channel today. For anyone interested the engine rooms of old, like the 40's & 50's were nothing like this and the word "safety" was no where to be found. Hell, you almost couldn't breathe down there. They were an accident waiting to happen and quite often it did happen. We've come a long way in a short period of time. By the 60's things were quickly changing and so was the technology. Thank God for change!

A lot of People don’t seem to understand how big a 250 hp diesel engine is. In a gas car, 250hp is very common in V6s. But in a diesel motor With 250 hp Is often capable of having 600+ ft lbs of torque, while the average 250hp Car prob has 200-300ft lbs of torque. And to use THAT MUCH POWER just to start your actual engine is just AWESOME!

4:50 have you ever thought of touching the prop shaft? Looks tempting

+yaseen reza Nope never ever ;) If that thing catches your arm you will end up very ugly ;) That shaft will not stop for sure.

ShippingHarbors haha I completely agree with you - It's just that whenever I'm repairing something like a desk fan, just to feel what it's like, I always press my finger on the prop itself or the shaft out of pure curiosity. Of course it's massively more dangerous here and I would never do it had I the chance, but it just brings up memories of me and the fans ;)
