I have a book by A.C. Hardy that discusses this. Referring to small coasters I quote “This is the type of ship which the Dutch, and particularly the Northern Dutchmen in Friesland, have been so adept at building. This is the type of ship which they marketed in quantities as a standard product to British and other ship owners. This is neither the time nor the place to enter into a long distance discussion as to just how Holland attained her place in the coastwise shipping of Great Britain on the building and on the owning side.” If the English sounds “old” that is because the book was published in April 1942 after being started in 1939.
