Shipwreck Alley

Amidst beautiful imagery of pristine shipwrecks on the bottom of Lake Huron, underwater archaeologists from the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in share their thoughts and stories about one of the largest underwater collections of shipwrecks in the world: Shipwreck Alley. Located in Lake Huron's Thunder Bay just off the shores of Alpena, Michigan, this maritime attraction offers a nearby interactive multimedia museum and exciting rides on the Lady Michigan--a glass bottom boat that cruises over dozens of Sanctuary wrecks. I have visited this museum and taken the glass bottom boat tour quite a few times and it is always worth it. My brother and I have dove 3 different wrecks in thunder bay and snorkeled two others. This is an amazing area and an amazing museum. If you are ever in the Alpena area it is not to be missed!!!

Lake Superior has entire sides of ships laying on the beaches.Most of the artifacts museums have were donated by people whom plundered that stuff off those ships back in the late 60's early 70's when it was highly collectable. I used to see portholes at flea markets that were plundered off those old ships. I knew a guy that owned his own business doing that until the state of Michigan finally wizened up and made people stop. After those collectors died, their collections were turned over to museums. Thats a good thing, but sad that it happened back in the early days.

Was the ship with all the new chrysler automobiles on deck, which was lost at sea on lake huron, or superior in the mid 1920s ever seen again? I spoke to a gentleman who as a boy saw it go through the locks at the Soo never to be seen again......

Ship was lost to the ice, but crew survived by walking across frozen ice to safety. The cars likewise recovered same way before ship sank. One of them reportedly on display@small local maritime museum.

@@thegypsyman9043 I had spoken to a diver who on a calm day actually saw the autos sitting on the deck through the crystal clear waters. I think were talking about TWO different ships.

Try 30 yr old freighter "City Of Bangor" 11/30/1926. Had 248 new Chrysler cars on board & headed for Duluth from Detroit. 202 were recovered before the ship sank after ran aground/stranded in ice. 46 cars eventually went down w/ her.

@@thegypsyman9043 I spoke to the man who saw it go through the soo locks in 1974. Later I met a diver who stated to me, on a clear still day, his boat saw a great shadow in the water, and below.... The cars on deck. It was in a very remote place.
