I played this on my Japanese lesson with my classmates... is like a memory game, but very short if you don't know many words.

@@RecLocJapan, actually, リサート IS a word. It's the Japanese transliteration of the fairly uncommon English word resought.

So if translated in English, you can't have the word end with N, as it's the only letter that doesn't make any ambiguous vowel sound at the end.

I can confirm that there are Japanese words that start with ん. The only one I remember is んず. Edit: Ntsou (I do not remember what kana it uses) is also one. I do not remember the definition of either of these words.

True that! But it's sooo hard to find a word starting with ん 😅

@@RecLocJapan, if you count in dialects, lots of Okinawan words have it. A common one is ンース/ん ーす (Okinawan form of みそ). The 琉球語派 are not mutually intelligible with Japanese, but are shifting towards Japanese, so those words may technically count. The 八丈方言 might also have some, though I am not certain on this (these are actually considered by some to be Japanese). Lastly, I recall hearing that ん in Old Japanese and Middle Japanese could be used where む would be used in Modern Japanese (I do not know if Peninsular Japanese did this as well), in a similar vein to how ち used to be always "ti" instead of "chi" and how し used to be "si" instead of "shi". Now, if you want to be REALLY cruel in Shiritori, you should throw a word with 𛀁 ("ye"), 𛀆 (this is the hiragana for "yi", you might need to find a font with full hentaigana support for this one), ゐ ("wi"), or ゑ ("we"). All of these have examples, but they are extremely rare, obscure, archaic, and/or dialectal. The only kana with truly no examples of a word that ends (or for that matter, even begins) with it is 于 ("wu"). This is such an obscure kana that I could only provide the katakana form here, as there is no way to type the hiragana form directly that I know of (this is a picture of it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hentaigana#/media/File:Hiragana_WU_2.png ). For more information on "wu", see this article: kobunworld.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-5.html

There should be a rule that you can't use English katakana words in this game. So many times you see people play it, and pull out English in katakana form. Katakana is the enemy of English pronunciation and learning.

It's actually a nice rule to add after some rounds to make it harder 😈

@@RecLocJapan It should be the rule from the beginning, Japanese game, Japanese words. This taps into my dislike of katakana as a destroyer of English pronunciation for language learners. It's a disgrace. All in good fun, don't assume I'm some angry commenter. You don't have to try and change my mind. This is born from years of being tortured by katakana pronunciation of English. The board of Education changes things all the time about English education in schools all the while TV, media, etc continue to pronounce things incorrectly because of katakana. Young Japanese students know a lot more English than they know about, simply because they think the words are not English. There are long and complex English words used in society all the time, that they are unaware of. Not to mention that the katakana sound bleeds into all English words and sentences. Remove katakana in TV, media, etc and slowly people will learn how the words (and consequently, English) should actually sound. It would help pronunciation on the whole, across the board. It will never happen because they would see it as a dilution of their language. Which for some reason when it is in katakana it is perfectly OK. When I hear my 2 kids speaking katakana English it is like an ice pick to the temple. Thank you for letting me voice my opinion. Remember, all in good fun.
