All my life I wanted to be a singer. I grew up totally idolizing Lana Cantrell and then came "the voice", Whitney Houston, and a few other "mentionables, Shirley Bassey, being in my top 5. But as I've listened to everyone since I have no cable, and since idiots think Angelina Jordan is the best ever, even old folks, like myself, except I'm not senile, Shirley Bassey just gives me chills and makes me cry every time. This woman is a brilliant, brilliant singer. I always and still do, love Lana and I will always contend Whitney as the best, but if people think Ms. Bassey is the best, they will get no argument from me. This woman has an absolutely fantastic voice and her power and the ability to build and then the beauty of her belting and, it just stirs the soul. "Dame" audience, why aren't they standing?

Lana Cantrell, I was in the studio audience for her first tv appearance in Sydney on Digby Wolfs Revue '62. I saw Shirley at Chequers around a year later. Was a teen then and now almost 80. How blessed have we been, Kerrie Biddell was also a good friend.

That’s because unlike Angelina Jordan, Adele etc; Dame Shirleys generation had to tour all the rough clubs in GB before being signed. That’s why this generation are superb at their craft. Perhaps not as approachable but they have had to EARN their adoration. I wasn’t brought up with her, dad was Rolling Stones fan and mum was classical ( I was Spice Girls and Kylie Minogue) . Now DSB is my number one. Wish she wasn’t so mature as would have loved to seen her live. I adore her. Good heavens she is so BEAUTIFUL as well as charismatic and talented.

Yes would have been an actress as well, Carol Reed wanted her to play Nancy but the US Studio bosses wouldn't have it , thought the public weren't ready for a black Nancy. Utter Rubbish even for then, when it was clear that her talent transcended everything else. A disappointment but she didn't dwell on it, she just became a living singing legend instead. A classy humble lady that is the greatest ever , who I also admire and respect so much too.

You can't compare a celebrity's life to the everyday human being. Think about it, a celebrity is bringing some type of act of enjoyment to the wealthy for their Leisure, of course a celebrity would also have privileged access but their may be glass ceilings that they have to fight through to get to the next level. If you research deeper, plenty of Black celebrities had to deal with systemic racism behind closed doors. It's never been an excuse, it's a reality. Trust me, if racism didn't exist in America I would've known about this Beautiful Woman before stumbling across her voice after Kanye West "Ye" sampled Diamond Are Forever 20 years ago. She should've been known in America as a British National Treasure and one of the Greatest Singers of all time.
