You are right on! Unfortunately, electronic devices that are available now make it much easier for a youngster to barely pass as a vocalist, and then with a great jingle, he/she becomes the newest sensation. They don't have to practice grueling vocal exercises to keep their voices fit, but they do have to practice dance moves which distracts the viewer from realizing the person performing has a pity poor voice. It's too bad, but entertainers like Dame Shirley are a lost art.

I was lucky enough to be there when she opened the Marquis theater in Manhattan and what a night it was. What a powerhouse, what a voice, what a presence. I have been a fan since the 1970s and am always mesmorised by every performance. I mean, just observe here. The sheer beauty in and out of this legend, the interpretation, the control, the power, how she draws you in. The sparkle in her eye. The technique. I am also a fan of opera singers too - massively. And when i rarely go to any soprano in concert, it is a very very special moment. If anyone makes a noise when i am concentrating on the singer - because we are being offered small doses of concentrated exquisiteness - woe betide anyone who coughs or rustles a sweet/candy wrapper! And it is the same with DSB. I am spellbound here. It's truly truly incredible. Watch her mouth/jaw/tongue position at the end of the first song. Always blown away.

I can NEVER get enough of DSB. The first concert I attended was at the Kelvin Hall Arena, Glasgow, circa 1976. I have followed her ever since. In this Pandemic, I have found myself getting pissed more regularly than normal and turning to Shirley for emotional release. The tears have flowed. Sadly we shall never see her live on stage again (in a concert scenario) as her aging dictates that it is not possible, or indeed welcome by herself. Suffice to say, Thank you Shirley. My life would have been worse without you!

Forgive me for changing the subject for a sec. "Charity : Water" is one add I did not want to skip. it is masterful; I couldn't stop looking, except for the part about the people with malignant face-tumours where I did have to look away.
