Hey Mike! I'm glad to see You and your new upgrade to that smoker. Their original designed basket like all the others out there lets the hot coals be scattered all over. This design keeps the hot coals contained and helps maintain the hot coal base. 👍 I know because this is My idea and several of these builders are now using. it. \🔥/ My advise to You is to split your logs down into smaller slivers. Adding smaller splits will ignite faster, burn cleaner, and will help keep those temps down where you want them. 👍 Oh.....and it's True name is the "Clean Burn Basket"! Metal On My Brother! \🔥/

I was looking for a fire basket v-shaped as this and liked the LSG model, unfortunately I felt like Goldilocks when choosing one of theirs because the large was too big and the small was too small, I needed something just right. I decided to design my own to an exact scale and bring it to a local welder, so I'm anxiously waiting it's completion. I like the looks of the basket, plenty of air flow, however the longevity of metal screening leaves me suspect to it's condition down the road. I'm having mine made from 1/4 plate with numerous 1/2 in. holes to fit my 18 x 18 fire box on my Lang. I noticed yours is a reverse flow unit with an odd rounded kick out on the end, is it to accommodate a better escape and even flow of gases? Although Lang doesn't make a basket yet, the increased notoriety may bring them around. Having your coal/logs as they burn move to a central area sure makes sense as opposed to a level open grate. Fire likes to climb and stacking the logs with walls holding their position creates a better fire. Yah, it makes all the sense in the world, I wish you many rewarding and enjoyable cooks on your Shirley in the years to come. I considered a Shirley you know, but would have preferred them settling on a name like Max or Bubbah, it reminded me of the skit on Airplane, "don't call me Shirley". lol Peace

Great review and demo. What happens when the ashes pile up in the basket ? Do you knock it out or just leave it for the duration of cook ?

You can knock them down with the stoker Shirley provides though I really never need to.

Thinking of ordering the patio model, just like yours. How much more is it, if I just buy it as an upgrade with my initial order? Or, is that even possible? I would even like a thicker firebox but my understanding is that it's not available on this model.

The fire basket and shelf are really the only upgrades allowed in this model. At the time of purchase my basket was $200 (including delivery)but it may have gone up since then.

They make them for all their models. It wouldn’t work on other smokers as it’s designed to fit on the firebox rails.
