At first, I thought she meant a gang war with people around 18 or more, but then with the shoe thing it started to sound a lot more like they were 8-15 (the "mom brought him to apologize" kinda sealed the deal on the age as well)...there's a very narrow age gap where a boy might steal a girls shoe, especially when only stealing one shoe, and it's almost always for the same reason...not surprised someone asked if "that boy" was her father...

I can also relate to the kids claiming a broken, abandoned car. I remember an old, unsecured house that we claimed as our turf when we were kids. We used to roam around in it and it was the most exciting thing ever. Of course we wouldn't tell our parents about it. We also found an old car once and thrashed it. ^^"

I think growing up in the 80s was just another time. I don't think it was particulary rough in "Australia" - at least not if it was somewhat similar to growing up in Germany at that time. Also, a story like that could very well also have happened when I was a kid (90's). Nothing too extraordinary about it (exept for Mamatori beeing the leader of the pack, of course). :D
