Bring back full contact. Many of the Karatekas are so incompetent when fighting with other styles because of this point sparring system. Point sparring should be done as a secondary for Dojo's but full contact should be in competitions
@r.l.mcdermid60343 жыл бұрын
You're misusing the phrase full contact. Full contact means that you are allowed to use all 8 points of contact to strike your opponent, that being your fists, elbows, knees, and feet.

@@r.l.mcdermid6034 That's not full contact according to the common use of that phrase. For instance, boxing is known as a full contact sport but they only use their fists.

You are right. This is what we used to call "points" fighting. Not to say that many points fighters aren't tough (got to sit in on a Joe Lewis black belt test....tough old man he was)....but it's not the same. My dad was trained from some of the old Vietnam DIs that brought their skills directly back from Okinawa. They didn't pad their feet. If they kicked you you got kicked with tennis shoes. There were many knockouts....alot of 2 on 1 fighting for tests. My dad was ambidextrous and was equally powerful with right or left sides of his body. He knocked out a few guys on the way to his black belt and often sparred full contact with the 4th Dan instructor.

I always wondered why the sparring system is basically just dancing and jumping around like maniacs instead of using the techniques practiced in class, it would give a chance to put to the test whatever is being learned at the dojo.

This is a highly defensive style. The basics and katas revolve around blocks and counters. It's surprising to see how aggressive the sparring matches are.

Shito ryu implies speed behind relaxed power as shotokan is your more power based style
@Tejinashi-f9z3 ай бұрын
Shito Ryu has more of the original Okinawan technique and more natural postures. Shotokan is a somewhat dumbed-down style, a lot of techniques have been taken out of it. The fighting distance of shito ryu is greater than that of shotokan, so when the shotokan enters its own fighting distance, it is already too short for shito ryu and attacks immediately, which shotokanos usually do not expect. Shito ryu also uses the hips differently. Shotokan defends first and then attacks because it uses its hips in this way, leaving its stomach and back almost completely exposed. Shito ryu does not turn the hips as much during defense, only about 45 degrees, and at the moment of defense, it turns the hips back to attack, so it can counterattack much faster than shotokanos. Shotokan was created by one person, shito ryu was founded by three people, one of them brought the techniques of the Chinese White Crane kung fu style with him. I went to Shotokan for three years, then Shito Ryu for seventeen years, so I have a basis for comparison. 🙂

What happened to my Ryu - gloves, foot protection and all that jumping is reminiscent TKD, standards have certainly dropped in the last 40 years. Sadly, I watched this vid and the quality of technique is missing - technique, precision and quality of teaching should improve with each succeeding generation, something has gone badly wrong here - I'm so grateful to my sensei/shihan for both literally and figuratively pounding good, sound and basic technique into us, both as children and as adults. I'm quite sad seeing this.
