Be More Chill - which had its world premiere in an extended run at Two River Theater, Red Bank, NJ - has music and lyrics by Joe Iconis, book by Joe Tracz, and is based on the novel by Ned Vizzini. The show was directed by Stephen Brackett with Chase Brock serving as choreographer. The orchestrator and musical supervisor was Charlie Rosen and the musical director and copyist was Nathan Dame. The Be More Chill cast album was produced by Kurt Deutsch, Joe Iconis and Charlie Rosen.
Praised as “a high-energy, imaginative, well-crafted world premiere musical” in The Star-Ledger, Be More Chill was lauded as “a vibrant, inventive musical that makes the most of every moment and features an abundantly talented cast” by BroadwayWorld.
Jeremy Heere (played by Will Connolly) is just an average teenager. That is, until he finds out about “The Squip” (Eric William Morris) - a tiny supercomputer that promises to bring him everything he desires most: a date with Christine (Stephanie Hsu), an invite to the raddest party of the year and a chance to survive life in his suburban New Jersey high school. But is being the most popular guy in school worth the risk?

One: I love how the actor sings with so much emotion it makes me feel what he is feeling. I love how much passion he sings with also, you can just tell he’s so in character. Two: the music. It starts very light then as michaels anxiety attack gets more intense, the music starts getting more intense. More instruments are being added and it gets louder. It adds to to the emotion so much and as michael starts to calm down, the music gets less over bearing and it ends with the same light tune from the beginning.

What is so hurtful to me is that you think Michael is the strong one all the time. While you can see how everything wears down Jeremy (or really, already has at the beginning of the musical), Michael is always in a good mood, builds Jeremy up again and promises him a brighter future. He seems so unfazed by it all, being happy about his sushi and the lady in the supermarket/deli. And then we see him in the bathroom and find out that every insult has been heard by him (the lines about him being a loner, driving a PT Cruiser, etc), but he just hasn't shown any effect of that on him. Often, people are far more hurt than they let show. Or maybe it seems the only thing helping Michael to not being broken by it all was his best friend as well, whom he just lost and now he doesn't know where to go anymore. Makes him actually showing up for the school play all the greater, if you ask me.
