Fantasy Zone is a genuine Sega classic, Opa Opa was almost like a mascot for them. Still remember the figure for Shenmue.

Yoooooooo!!!!! I just recently got into shmups. Dodonpachi and the like. I’m so glad I found this, love that you still post about the genres and games you care about. You should 100% switch over to bullet hell when you can, I started with super Hydorah and quickly moved on to a more fulfilling experience like the one Dodonpachi DOJ offers, or Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu if you want to ease into it. Or if the classic shmup is more your thing then stick with that!! But the bullet hells, gameplay wise, are always going to have more “depth”. Classic shmups are more “brutal” not necessarily “harder” if that makes sense.

Good to see another stream (or at least see the archive pop-up), especially since I only caught the Bayo 3 archive yesterday, and wanting to get more shmup experience is super relatable. Prompted me to load up Gradius with this in the background on another monitor for some chilled arcadey vibes. Need to go back to ZeroRanger at some point to finish it off, but there are so many others I need to play as well... Intrigued to put some time into Silpheed: The Lost Planet on PS2, since I think Treasure worked on that (or at least had some involvement).

Glad to see Matthew playing shmups. I too am exploring the genre only recently. Also glad I'm not the only one doing it in the comments!

I like when you explain game elements and mechanics, things that these oldies got right or didn't, or when it's obvious that the engine/port inevitable limited certain things and thus made them harder. Even though those thoughts will be stretched out and trickled out in streams as long as this. Even if it's just on the fly thoughts.

I recently got a copy of Oboro Muramasa sent to me by a friend from another country who stumbled upon a copy for surprisingly little money. Not a gift I expected in my mailbox ever. As much as the graphics and music are a sight to behold, the gameplay once gotten used to is equally smooth and fun. Sadly I took a break from it and everything was lost again, as I found the combat controls to be extremely different from what I'm used to or expected from other games. Instead of button combos, the game mainly relies on directional input while holding an attack-button. Imagine you attacked solely or mainly during dodge-offset in Bayonetta, and not outside. The bossfight against the Samurai earlier in the game is what forces you to learn the actual mechanics to a basic degree, but not much after that. The next real ability-check is much later in the game. I know it's off-topic here, but I wondered whether that might be a game for a deeper dive, mechanics-explanations as I can imagine more people having had trouble with that one, or just a general stream. I certainly hope for a port to a modern console, for it only came out on the Wii and the Vita. I've heard the Vita has some extra content, but I only got the Wii version - the game deserves the big screen imho.

If you're looking for easy shumps you should play the PC-98 Touhou games, they are quite easy as the real challenge is getting 1cc in order to fight the secret bosses. I've recently picked them up and find them to strike a good balance of difficulty. This is coming from some one who's not the greatest shump player. I've played a ton of Zero Ranger with out 1ccing it, can beat Metal Slug in 5 continues and can only beat the first level of Ikaruga without taking damage. Of the 5 PC-98 games only 2, 4 and 5 are traditional shumps. The second Touhou has some wonky hitboxes but is still really fun, I'm certain you could beat it in couple of a tries. The forth is easier because of the much smaller hitboxes but is still really fun. Currently I'm stuck on the 5th as it is the hardest of the bunch.

Shmups are a huge blind zone of mine so I recently started with Super Fantasy Zone and Progear. So it was a pleasant surprise to see Fantasy Zone pop up on the stream, taking notes on the other games

3:46:48 That is the stage I gave up on as a child on the GameBoy. A classmate got a bit further in that stage on the MegaDrive. Absolutely hate the mechanic, ever since this game and in every subsequent game using it in any level.

For anyone looking to play the original r-type be warned - the pc engine version runs too fast, faster than the arcade version. The arcade version ran at 55hz and the pc engine version runs at 60hz and they didn't adjust the gameplay accordingly. This might sound trivial but in practice it turns a game that's already ball bustingly hard into a bloody nightmare.

Have you played bungie's old rts myth? You might like it, a lot of nuance to the mechanics and it takes a completely different direction to the dune style rts games.

A new Matthewmatosis stream, a bunch of terrible and depressing gaming news that released since so i'll just say this: Silent Hill 2 Remake baaaaaaaaaaaad

@specknacken6507
@specknacken6507 Жыл бұрын
@@whycontainit The depressing thing is that not enough people know about Bloober or their resume. I know internet and bubbles and all that stuff but goddamn i could not stop shaking my head when some people cheered for "the thing i know which of all titles of the franchise needs a remake the least by far but everyone loves it the most and Konami wants that sweet sweet nostalgia cocaine money." Fuck this for real man. The RE4 Remake makes me cynical because it's such a waste of resources but that's nothing compared to "Let's cheer for the people whose message in their last game was that the mentally ill are better off killing themselves remaking a subtle and thoughful classic with a literal sledgehammer and we can already see the glorious results with them fucking up the opening scene." Why are modern remakes like this? Why are they so clearly greenlighted by only the cynical suits and not directors with a clear goal and vision in mind? Why can't we have the former director of SH4 for example announce that he's gonna remake (or rather fix) the game cause he felt unsatisfied for good fucking reason (i still like it mind you!) and has now the means to do it proper justice? Like my favourite example of a remake done good not just in design but intention and purpose: Resident Evil Remake by Shinji Mikami. Not that we haven't had great remakes in the past 10 years or so but i feel like we only like 1 or 2 good remakes like Odin Sphere or Trials of Mana for every 10 "remember the commercial succesful thing you loved but now you obviously think its shit cause it's OLD? It's the same but NEW!" products by faceless suits. Fuck that shit. Absolute cancer for the industry.

Don't really know why you'd force yourself through these ancient shmups, play some Cave stuff like Espgaluda or Mushihimesama, way more fun.

@@fallenose683 He said he doesn't have a lot of experience with them and that he struggles to get into them because many of them are too hard. If he were to play something like the PC port of Mushihimesama on Novice mode it would help him ease into the genre and learn the basics.
