I"m back with another ABBA reaction, and this time we listen to the cheekily titled "Bang-a-Boomerang," which I figured might have to do with the "kinetic" motion and experience of relationships and/or feelings, and it turned out to be about that and more. This is one of their happiest songs and it has also a funny video. The bass line is incredible. 😀

This one was orignally recorded by their labelmates Svenne and Lotte who had a big hit with it in Sweden and entered in in the 1975 Swedish heats to find a Eurovision entry. Abba then recorded their own version for the album. It's very pop and catchy, bright and sunny, with that driving rhythm.

Love the way this song just gallops from start to finish with a frenetic and insistent pulse. It takes you on a jaunty joyride and at the end of the day, what more could you ask for? It is pure bubblegum pop and smartly references the innocence and buoyancy of bands like The Monkees and The Archie’s. It is also strongly reminiscent (rhythm-wise) of Honey Honey from the Waterloo album.

This song ratchets up immediately and never lets you go. I’ve always loved this song. ABBA are the ultimate vibe masters and the frantic vibe of this song will not and CANNOT be denied. Thank you sir for this musical journey you are taking us on! 👍

(remember that by Eurovision rules the song couldn't excede three minutes) There is an official video, that was made in Stockholm on a windy day in April 1975 in 2 days ABBA made official videos for 4 songs from your third album, just tittled "ABBA": "Bang a Boomerang" "I do I do I do I do I do" "Mamma mia" "S.O.S." For all of it's pop cheese Björn's lyric is really quite clever. I think I've said before that not writing in his own language can result in phrases that make a native English speaker cringe, but the flip side to that is he also comes out with phasing that falls well outside of the usual clichés. The sentiment is not much more than "Smile and the world smiles with you" but he elevates it with lines like "Sweet sweet kisses so tender always will return to sender", and my favourite verse… "Love is always around and you can look for it anywhere When you feel that you've found it my advice is to take good care Never use it as a selfish tool Never ever be such a fool Every feeling you're showing Is a boomerang you're throwing" Deep yet very singable :) And yes, they worked with some very capable musicians to build their wall of sound.

You can tell that this song was written for Eurovision. Not only is the melody very typical for the contest in the 70s, the nonsense title fits right in. The Eurovision Song Contest has produced hits like 'Ding-a-Dong', 'Diggi-loo Diggi-ley' and 'Boom Bang-a-Bang'. After all, a song has to appeal to an international audience, so it's best to keep it as simple as possible :-) Other than that, I usually skip this one when I'm on an ABBA marathon.

I wrote a long comment under Livingstone and I said Lotta was singing on this song. This is clearly Agnetha and Frida. Hahaha So they did re-record this, but I think I can hear Lotta in the chorus. There's a Swedish version with Svenne & Lotta but I do think they recorded it in English as well (would be weird if they didn't when Lotta is fluent in English). Sorry for the confusion!

If you interpret the lyrics as 'like a bang, a boom, a boomerang" it makes sense but the title does not
