One of the best songs on the album! eerie and haunting with that added echo, sounds like she is singing in a church ⛪️ all alone. - C.

I can't wait to see what you make of some of the titles as you progress! Vocally she has barely got started in realising what she can do. We're still in the dark depths, it all sounds like pagan ritual and magic, the shallow earth and the halo of the sky and stars, talk of wombs and rich soil, fertile, the earth.

I can’t wait until you get to the Head Over Heels LP and everything after. As much as I appreciate this album, I consider that one to be where the band finally starts coming into its signature sound. Wait until you hear Elizabeth’s voice blossom. Garlands has a very singular mood. The entire thing sounds like some dark ritual happening in the woods in the middle of the night. Interesting sound, but I can only take in small doses. What comes later is much more vibrant and melodic.

I often flash back to listening to this - my favorite track from Garlands - in the dark one very cold night nearly 40 years ago, with my Walkman’s headset as partial earmuffs. The song is so hypnotic and entrancing! I imagine the lyrics relating an early death (murder? Or instead maybe a stillborn or aborted fetus?) and hasty burial (shallow, not deep) in obviously a wet, woodsy area , with perhaps the halo referring to dying without sin. (and being something of a homophone with hallowed). Green water - faded river - dirty, rich soil - Strong and fertile The then-shallow she - Earth as we know it The then-halo she - A sky for the sacred Stars in my eyes - Stars at my feet Womb in the belly - Capitol place

The first cocteau twins song I ever heard in 2010 and purely by accident, and my favorite song on the album. I would go onto listen to every album and EP and would consider Cocteau twins one of my favorite bands of all time. This also took me down the goth genre rabbit hole and I'm eternally grateful to it. I'm glad someone finally reacted to this one and gave their detailed thoughts and opinions on it. Great commentary Matt!!

Scotland's greatest musical export,to think Elizabeth was 14/15 years old when she "wrote" much of the Garlands album.

Hahaha, it does seem like lots of folks have been telling me the lyrics at this point in their evolution are less relevant than the overall atmosphere. But that's hilarious.

I wasn't expecting Cocteau Twins. You tend to be lyric oriented and Cocteau is mostly gibberish. Even the titles are bonkers. Don't get me wrong. I'm a longtime fan. You might like Dead Can Dance. Actually, I'm pretty sure you would like Dead Can Dance.
@mattsnider2667 Жыл бұрын
So here's the thing---there's an acid-trance track I enjoy from the '90s called Dead Can Dance, so now I'm wondering whether that tune has some influence or reference to the group? Will look into this. And LOL about the Cocteau Twins and their indecipherable lyrics (others have mentioned this to me).
