I've loved this fir 41 years and it never ceases to amaze me. Theres no defining chorus but its dripping on atmosphere and the bass/keyboards are sublime.

Hunter And The Hunted was originally demoed at Rockfield in January 1982 (first as The Low Song, then under the working title of The Hunter) making it one of the first three songs written for the album to be completed. "If you strip out the vocal you get this fantastic theme going on - a really, really romantic theme going on. At the time we were struggling, lyrically I was struggling, and musically we felt there was something missing. Herbie Hancock, the jazz legend, was working next door, and he came in - and he was particularly attracted to Derek Forbes' bass playing - and Derek to this day is very, very proud of that, as so he should be - Herbie encouraged us not to give up on it. So much so that he went in himself - it was only ten minutes - and sort of doodled on it. And with more luck and enthusiasm he was there. And to this day, a lot of people mention it as being a 'dark horse' track on New Gold Dream and it's certainly one of them." - Jim, Sunday Herald interview, 2008.

The song is so.amazing. when you hear it back , try and focus on the drumming changes that effect the bass pattern changes and then the tonal changes u talked about. Just simply and amazing melodic song Jim kerr just floatimg over it

Mmmmmagic....i just want to crack an opening into this universe and meld into it. They dont really revisit this kind of lushness til Big Music...but a pathway of great songs along the way.

Zero formulaic work here. Brilliant creativity and uniqueness in melody, instrumentation and voice. Oh and they have a black drummer in an otherwise all white guy band which I always thought was cool.

Haha, you might have liked the vintage lineup of the Dead Kennedys, then (D. H. Peligro was their longtime drummer, recently passed away). But you're right, this song (and all of the early Simple Minds stuff, so it seems) is just crazy expansive and original. Art-synth-rock-pop.

I also love this album. I never listened to David Sylvian / Japan but I'll have to give them a try. But listening to this track now, I'm thinking Roxy Music's Avalon probably influenced some of this album.
