You don't really need heat in the studs, you need heat in the cam cover. Aluminium expands roughly twice as much as Steel and you want it to expand away from the stud, breaking the seal and also giving you some clearance. Boiling water can be quite effective and you should be able to run a purely resistive load, like a kettle, from the generator, whilst the electronic load of the induction heater is not happy with the generator output (not an uncommon problem). You'd also be able to make a mug of tea, in case that matters to you.

Heating the cam cover won't help, the bolts are screwed into the head.

@@bikeman123 Yes, nice oily threads that should put up little resistance to being undone. But the studs will not rotate. The corrosion between them and the cam cover is preventing this. This is why the cover will not come off, it's stuck to the studs.

You are right with modern cars having all their functions on a touchscreen. Truly this is the work of the devil and I hate modern cars with a passion. When I drive my mother’s Audi A1 the controls are intuitive and can be operated by touch without taking my eyes off the road.

Heating those studs would make them tighter rather than looser as they will expand but the cold alloy won't expand much. Ideally you need to heat the alloy and cool the studs.

Yes but the heat expansion breaks the seal to the head, and they’re wound into the head not the cover you can see

@@furiousdrivingI would try steadily tapping the stud and nuts sideways and down (and the cam cover) while you’re doing all the heating… gradually encourage the surfaces to unstick. Plus try an appropriate socket over the nuts to undo the stud ?

I learnt the gaffer tape lesson back in 1998 with my audi 80 quattro. The seat upholstery on those was a weak spot and my 135,000 mile student steed had plenty of holes in it. I can only say you're lucky you learnt the lesson in winter, because in the heat of summer people were pointing out bits of gaffer tape stuck to my back, legs and behind pretty much every time I drove anywhere 😆

You want a crows foot on the lower nut, with a ring spanner on the top one. That would give you the leverage to get the nuts tight and have good access to the lower nut to turn it. If that sound's helpful, good luck!

Steel and Alloyed metals being dissimilar fuse together.over time. A mild acid like vinegar soaking In a valley of clay or plasticine, and even on a vertical surface tomato sauce may be the solution after a good soak. Earlier Mercedes had a marvelous material called Mtex on the seats. Which was nearly indestructible in normal use.

In 2022 I was at an Alfa dealer near the California movie studios. I overheard a young man talking on his cell to his mother. That the dealer was giving him a special deal of some repair. He said that "Some have troubles with these as soon as they drive off the lot. "

I had my w204 seat done last year. I had to remove mine myself though and send it off. Recovered in original Mercedes MBTex for £150. A slightly fiddly job but doable. Looks like new 😀

Weld nuts on the studs then use socket breaker bar or impact driver

I found using a flangge nut with locking splines würth PN:039408 (for reference) helps alot when removing studs using the doble nut method. Worked a treat on tejh exhaust manifold studs on my 206. a star washe between the nuts me also help but no guarantee on that.

I had a 2016 A220d AMG Line with that OM651 engine, matched to a 7sp DCT box. I had the Brabus D2 tuning pack on it from the dealership new. It was bloomin quick. I had it 4 years and did 105,000 miles. At the end of that 4 years the Artico fake leather was splitting on the drivers seat. Utter rubbish.

You win some, you loose some as the saying goes. In this video it was the latter but look at the positives. The Alfa isn't stuck miles away in the way waiting for as yet unknown new parts assuming that engine does come apart. The Merc has a visible weak point that should be an easy fix being structural that's much better that the weak points that we can't see. You got the seat sorted so not having to worry about gaffer tape glue. It's not a good look looking like you've sat on a slug from gaffer glue. And you have more time to ponder what the next step with the Alfa will be. Not brilliant plus sides but it's better than nothing. We subscribe to the channel as it shows us real scenarios that are not all bright lights and fairy dust but are real life. Take care and thanks for sharing.

I got a generator for free, it's a 2 stroke and enough to run a grinder or drill, that's about all. Handy thing to have if there's a power cut but i live in basically a city, so that's quite rare. It was owned by an old lady living in a mobile home without power back in the day. Guess they were hardy souls in them days 😬👍🇮🇪

As mechanic in Australia I can say from experience at least down under. The W205/S205 are a downgrade in reliability for Mercedes Benz. At least in Australia we get proper leather for the higher end trim levels. Can’t stand the fake leather.
