ph-values of water get altered by polution. Look it up. The Yukon Terratory hit very hard as the tundra melts, causing this same coloration. The comments seem to find this funny. You may want to rethink your sense of humor.

It looks like iron oxide. It's also an early indication of volcanic activity. Lake Nyos also turned red when a gas pocket churned the iron rich soil up.
