Instead they traded for a guy who can win them a championship NOW and they got an extra 2029 draft pick to replace AD with when the time comes. Mick, you don't need to know why the Lakers made the trade. Even though the Lakers were not shopping AD, if you have an opportunity to get Luka, you take it. The question is why Dallas would make such a trade? No bidding war... no offers to the league to offer their best packages. Instead they wanted AD. I will disagree with you though about AD not being in his prime. He has been in beast mode the last couple of seasons. The question is how much longer can he keep this up?

AD is at the tail end of his prime. People shit on him because the Lakers have been a mediocre/good not great team the last couple of years. That is because of Pelinka and his awful roster construction around AD and LeBron. AD has been awesome this year. He’s averaging 25 and 11 while basically cleaning up everything for the Lakers on defense. There are only a few players who could put up that production with that type of defensive responsibility. Mavs roster is probably the best team AD will have around him in his entire career. Outside of 2020, AD has never been surrounded with shooters who can space the floor and defend. The biggest issue for the Mavs is filling the void Luka left when it comes to playmaking. Kyrie is going to have to step up and finally be a #1 option who can average around 28 points a game. That’s a a lot to ask of him but I do believe Mavs will still be contenders. Celtics are the only team I think are for sure better than them. The rest of the NBA is a crapshoot.
