It's too bad Chicken of the Sea won't spend an extra $0.10 on each can and just put olive only in them. I buy the Chicken of the Sea packed in water then drizzle my own good olive oil over them, and some herbs.
@SardineExpedition8 күн бұрын
Right! There’s been some suspicious “olive oil” in some sardines too. Some of it seems way too watery. I need to pick up a bottle of some good oil. I like that idea.

The best sardines are from Portugal and Spain. You cannot go wrong with King Oscar, it is clean and genuine. Chicken of the Sea is a good brand that is available but because of the big price difference, I would try buy this brand at Walmart. Btw, I always buy a good brand sardines in oil if I want to eat them directly. If it is in tomato sauce, I fry them in garlic and onions.

I just had some Chicken of the Sea sardines in Olive Oil last night. They were less than ½ the cost of King Oscar, so I bought 2 of them, at Krogers. Stay away for soy and nut oils. Extra Virgin Olive oil is the best of the bunch. Watch out for the oils in canned tuna too. Sardines survive the test of time. My Grampa craved them back in the 60’s. Same containers. 😋

All sardines are caught in the same boats, processed & canned in the same factories. They’re all chosen by size before they become a King Oscar or Chicken of the Sea, or any other cheap brand. Same fish, same factory, different labels & price.

@ronmcc1007 күн бұрын
IMO, I think your test is subjective on the basis of why are you purchasing the product? If you DON'T want to taste the sardines, I understand why one would like the COS brand, because the seasonings will hide the taste of the fish, where as the KO brand allows more of the fish to come through. Personally, I believe there are too many soy based products out there (it's cheaper!) and I also believe that olive oil is better for you. I may not purchase the KO brand, but I'll be looking for something that has just olive oil.
@SardineExpedition7 күн бұрын
I hear you. Soybean oil is trash. I avoid it at all costs outside of some sardines because I have fun trying these and sharing it. Love ones with quality ingredients though. Trying these flavors has been interesting but nothing beats a solid plain ole sardine that doesn’t need sauces up.

@@ToddHastings-ji5lp I do love a good Polar brand. Pretty tasty for the price! I was just looking up bristling vs herring vs pilchard and I swear every thing I read differs lol. Such a complex little fish species 🤣
@davetarpley37405 күн бұрын
Grocery Outlet has Polar sardines in mustard, tomato sauce or hot sauce. The mustard is probably the best. The price is right but the amount of sardines per can is a bit low. On an ounce-by-ounce basis, there might be better deals. Polar smoked mussels are also at G.O. 1 style is a mere buck a can, and the sodium is only 100mg. I add em to reduced-sodium clam chowder goosed with ground celery seed.

Chicken of the see is all about keeping costs down which is nice, but I prefer the get the King Oscar or like brands (usually on sale or at discount stores) that have simple and healthy ingredients.
