Undeniable! It's the same song - just different words.

Eh , some elements are shuffled around too. It's all the best parts. These days we'd call it a remix and they'd use a sample.

The song 'The Banjo Song' by the trio The Big 3 (1963), in turn, has similar lyrics to the American work song 'Oh! Susanna 'by Stephen Foster 1848.

To Dutch (no doubt, you like more dutch) Writing "I prefer" you meant obviously primitive sexuality and primitive arrangement of a melody. It's easier to aquire by ignorant mind.

Even in those days they knew about plagiarism and lawsuits. They definitely could have got damages or composer credits - compare the story of Chuck Berry (Sweet Little Sixteen) and Brian Wilson (Surfin' USA) and that was hardly the first. Stole not only the melody but the whole intro. Cass had other problems by that time but wonder why the other two guys did nothing. Seems unlikely that they never heard it.

Это разные музыкальные эпохи, совсем разные стили музыки. Как-то некорректно их сравнивать, просто дело вкуса. Кстати, композиция от The Big 3 тоже является "кавером" от песни 19 века "Oh, Susanna".

Copy or not, Venus and most of Shocking Blue's discography are excellent! Its a shame or perhaps a blessing, more people don't know about them. Mariska Veres had some voice!!!

I wonder if there were any royalties paid to The Big 3? Seems that the lead in Shocking Blue hails from the same ilk as The Big 3 and their use of classical guitar.

This seemed hardly the regular four bar blues progression. But very much a (Big Three)song in its own right . Doesn't antimatter , Shocking Blue made a boring tune from the Big Three in something very special. Who probably did a fair bit of barrowing themselves.

The chord progression of both of these songs is very different from any blues I'm aware of. For 'Venus', at least, the verse chords are from the Dorian mode: Em (Im) and A (IV), neither of which are the dominant 7th chords we hear in the blues. There's such a thing as minor blues, but in that case the chords would be Im and IVm. 'Venus' is in E Dorian, except for a brief modulation to A Dorian in the chorus. Dorian mode: 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7. Natural minor (Aeolian mode): 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7. The Dorian mode's natural 6 is why the IV chord in Venus is A (a c# e) rather than Am (a c e). The Dorian mode's flat 3 is why the I chord (Em) is minor, and why the song's tonality is minor.

Bon Jovi then stole the vocal line from Venus and created Livin' on a Prayer.

The Big 3 song sounds like almost every Wild wild song of 1800's, so they didn't have any rights for the chord progression. The lyrics are different. You cannot sue if Shocking Blues' vocalist sings sometimes in similar way. Neither can Donna Summer sue all the 80's pop artists, Kylie and MJ especially. Next we see how similar Lady Gaga's bad Romance is to CCR's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" or Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind". Maybe we could hear how Metallica sounds like Diamond Head too... People like the same melody and the beat. And yes, we want the lyrics to be about sex. And we hope that vocalist is singing to us.

1. There were lawyers back in 1970, if there was a case it would have been filed. 2. The 10 second opening guitar hook in Venus is killer, and it's Leeuwen's

@stephendoriankutos4429 I disagree with the idea it is "stolen." There are similarities, but I'd put it as influence if anything. Again, there were lawyers in 1970, so...agree to disagree. I think we can at least agree "Stephen" with a "ph" is the correct spelling. My screename has a 'v', but I am a "Stephen" as well
@stephendoriankutos4429
@stephendoriankutos4429 11 ай бұрын
@@SteverenoOFFICIAL Agreed about the spelling of Stephen! To your point about lawyers, that's true, but you have to keep in mind Tim Rose, who had a lot of things stolen from him over the years, did not have the finances to hire a lawyer to fight this case. He wanted to sue, but just couldn't afford the lengthy and expensive process, and none of his record labels were willing to foot the bill. As to the opening acoustic strumming riff, I would've agreed about it being an influence, if not for a few things. One, it's verbatim the Pinball Wizard riff. Two Leeuwen was in a group before Shocking Blue called The Motions, and they were one of the best Who-copycat bands of the 60's, even recreating the My Generation album cover for one of their singles. And three, Leeuwen has stated in interviews that he copped it from Pinball Wizard. I don't think he's admitted to stealing the melody and riff from The Big Three's Banjo song, but it's clear that's were it came from. Tim Rose later in the 90's actually had one of his songs stolen by Nick Cave, who was a friend and played with him at a couple of shows as a big fan. Tim was shocked since he thought they were friends, or so he thought.
